IMPACT: International Journal of Research in Humanities, Arts and Literature (IMPACT: IJRHAL) ISSN (P): 2347-4564; ISSN (E): 2321-8878 Vol. 7, Issue 5, May 2019, 299-304 © Impact Journals POPULAR SHADES OF ‘COLOURISM’: AN ANALYSIS OF HUMOUR AND BODY POLITICSIN KERALA’S VISUAL CULTURE Liju Jacob Kuriakose Research Scholar, Department of English, NIT Puducherry, Karaikal, Tamil Nadu, India Received: 23 May 2019 Accepted: 24 May 2019 Published: 25 May 2019 ABSTRACT Indian cinema in general and Malayalam cinema in specific, with its unique beginnings in the realistic idealism of the black-and-white eraand its gradual shift in the 80’s to the imaginary male-centric spaces, is well critiqued upon as a shedding of social responsibility. Contemporary Malayalam cinema however, is praised for its‘new generation cinema’ wave, which ha sapparently shed both its fetish over rustic settings, anti-political undertones and patriarchal violence, to embrace an urban, post-political life of the supposed ‘new generation’ Malayalees. Such cinemas however, continue remain within the monochrome panorama of the old generation which refused to acknowledge the social other and continued to position the dark-skinned, short statured, plump bodies as a site of violence and humour where the physical body plays a part in the politics of subaltern subjugation. The indirect implication of course being that such bodies are not suited for a civil society, who remain incongruent with the realities of the modern spaces by either being violent and antagonistic or comic and out of place. The paper aims to broadly define and delineate the practices of casteism and visual untouchability being practiced in Malayalam visual media. -

Annu Sabu Palathingal MA English student Christ University Bangalore Abstract A new movement of films popularly called „new generation‟ films have now become an increasing trend in the Malayalam film industry. These films are known for their fresh perspectives and innovative ways of storytelling. These even though are called „new generation‟ implying, of and by the modern youth of Kerala; are heavily romanticizing the past and is very much concerned with the traditions and culture of Kerala. The research will analyse and understand this ironical phenomenon of the highly western influenced youth becoming more traditionally rooted. The research will use Social cycle theory by Alexandre Deulofeu and Yi Wang‟s theory that Globalization Enhances Cultural Identity, to analyze the films Thattathin Marayathu and Ustad Hotel. Even though the films are about the modern globalized and westernized youth of Kerala, the films are very much traditional and culturally rooted in terms of their story and message. The increase in globalization has in turn led to an increase in the realization of one‟s own culture and traditional roots among the youth of Kerala. The Star centered elitist Romantic comedies gave way to a more realistic popular cinema that welcomed experimentations. Common people, common man’s life, realistic settings, marginalized cultures , popular music, regional slang, gender and cultural minorities etc. qualified to be appeared on the big screen. This new trend is popularly termed as New Generation Cinema. This paradigm shift in the Cinema is the impact and reflection of an ideological conflict that exists in the Kerala society. The rise of a new middle class ,as a result of the spread of education and gulf money, invited a new set of values substituting, at the same time, struggling with the earlier elitist classical traditional values. The fierce ideological conflict between these two ideologies reflected in the cinema also. The two films at stake in this article represent these two ideological streams that run strongly in the socio-political sphere of Kerala.
