Email: [email protected] The Willow Creek Riparian Preserve (Preserve) is a privately owned 130-acre site located 30 miles east of Kingman, Arizona. The Preserve was formally established in 2007 with the purchase of 10-acres and an agreement with the eastern adjoining private landowner to add an additional 120-acres. The Preserve location was unfenced and wholly accessible by livestock, off-road vehicle use, and hunting. In October of 2008 the Preserve was fenced with volunteer efforts from the local Rotary Club and Boy Scout Troop 66. Additional financial assistance came through a large discount in the cost of fencing materials from Kingman Ace Hardware. A total of 0.5-linear mile of new wildlife friendly fencing (barbless top wire and 18-inches above-ground bottom wire) was installed along the south and west sides and connected to existing Arizona State Lands cattle allotment fencing. Baseline and on-going studies and data collection have occurred since 2004. These have included small mammal live trapping; chiropteran surveys with the use of Anabat; migratory, breeding, and winter avian surveys; amphibian and reptile surveys; deployment of game cameras; animal track and sign identification and movement patterns; vegetation and plant surveys; and a wetland delineation. -

Duke Updated by: CWHR Program Staff, March 2000 DISTRIBUTION, ABUNDANCE, AND SEASONALITY The Sonora mud turtle may be extinct in California (Jennings 1983). Historically, in California, its elevational range extended from 43 m (140 ft) to 155 m (510 ft) (Jennings and Hayes 1994). Early records were along the lower Colorado River at Palo Verde and the Yuma Indian Reservation, Imperial County (VanDenburgh 1922). Dill (1944) observed this species in the lower Colorado River in 1942, however, no specimens were collected. The most recent positive record was in 1962 in a canal near the Laguna Dam on the Arizona side of the Colorado River (Funk 1974). Occurs in lacustrine and riverine habitats. SPECIFIC HABITAT REQUIREMENTS Feeding: Primarily carnivorous, although some aquatic plant material is taken. Feeds mainly on aquatic insects and larvae, and includes fish, frogs, carrion, small mollusks and crustaceans in the diet. Food animals are either benthic or associated with submergent vegetation. Plant material includes aquatic angiosperms and green algae. Opportunistic shifts in diet occur in response to shifts in prey availability. Turtles will shift to more omnivorous food habits in habitats where benthic invertebrates are less abundant. No difference between male and female feeding habits, nor shifts in diet with age. Forage by crawling slowly and methodically along bottom in shallow water in both dense vegetation and open water. -

Results yielded a robust support to the monophyly of a group (Cuora group) consisting of Cuora sensu lato and the monotypic Pyxidea. Within the Cuora group, the continental Cuora (sensu stricto) and the two subspecies of Ci. flavomarginata constituted two well-supported monophyletic groups. Distinctly small interspecific genetic distances in the former groups suggested that in the continent speciations in Cuora took place much later than the primary divergences in the Cuora group, or speciations in other related genera, such as Mauremys. Our analyses failed to provide a substantial support to the monophyly of any other combinations of taxa within the Cuora group, including Cuora in broad and strict senses, and Cistoclemmys as consisting of Ci. galbinifrons and Ci. flavomarginata. Besides these, our results also suggested the non-monophyly for the Batagurinae and the Geoemydinae, and sister relation- ships of the Bataguridae with Testudinidae rather than with the Emydidae. With 18 currently recognised species, Pelusios is one of the most speciose chelonian genera worldwide, even though the taxonomy of some species is contentious. Recent investigations suggested that the closely related, but morphologically distinct genus Pelomedusa is para- phyletic with respect to Pelusios, and that Pelomedusa consists of nine deeply divergent lin- eages. Using three mitochondrial and three nuclear DNA fragments (2054 bp mtDNA, 2025 bp nDNA), we examined for the first time the phylogeny of Pelusios by molecular means. Our analyses included all Pelusios species, except the probably extinct P. seychellensis, as well as the nine Pelomedusa lineages. The results showed that Pelusios and Pelomedusa are reciprocally monophyletic. Limited sampling of Pelusios species and homoplasy introduced by remote outgroups most likely explain the paraphyly of Pelomedusa in previous studies. The distinctiveness of most Pelusios species was confirmed, but none of the currently recognised species groups within Pelusios was monophyletic. -

However, the composition of benthic systems has changed because many freshwater ecosystems have been invaded by non-native species, including bivalve species such as the asian clam, corbicula fluminea. i studied the diet of Sternotherus carinatus, the Razor- backed Musk Turtle, in southeastern oklahoma across three zones of corbicula abundances: no corbicula, moderate corbicula densities, and high corbicula densities. i hypothesized that the composition of corbicula in the diet would increase with increased abundance of corbicula in the riverine environment. Turtles were caught by snorkel surveys in the little and Mountain fork rivers and kept overnight for the collection of fecal samples. The diet was similar to that found in previous studies on S. carinatus except that corbicula is a new component of the diet and composed the majority of the diet in high-density corbicula areas. an index of Relative importance (iRi) showed that corbicula was the most important prey item in the areas with high corbicula density, was equally as important as gastropods in the areas with moderate corbicula density, and was absent from the diet in areas without corbicula. -

Allison Desert Tortoise Recovery Office, US Fish and Wildlife Service, 1340 Financial Blvd. #234, Reno, Nevada 89502. Email: [email protected] The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has standards for determining whether species should have federal protection. It also has standards for describing a viable species, couched in terms of representation, redundancy, and resilience. These characteristics were used in the 1994 Recovery Plan to design and evaluate the size and location of proposed critical habitat units for the Mojave desert tortoise. Regarding long-term representation and resilience, critical habitat units were designed to sustain a population of at least 5000 adult tortoises. In situations where the critical habitat unit was smaller than the threshold of 500 sqmi or if the number of tortoises was found to be fewer than 5000, it was expected that land management would result in connectivity to larger populations outside the critical habitat unit and to other critical habitat units. At the time the original recovery plan was developed, there were no estimates of the number of tortoises in any particular critical habitat unit and little information about how tortoise populations were connected for short-term viability. In the meantime, we are able to use population estimates to evaluate connectivity management needs for critical habitat units and to describe what long- and short-term connectivity entails for tortoise populations. -
