Introduction to: Richard Kitson, The Musical Antiquary (1909-1913) Copyright © 2003 RIPM Consortium Ltd Répertoire international de la presse musicale (www.ripm.org) The Musical Antiquary (1909-1913) The Musical Antiquary [MUA] was published in Oxford from October 1909 to July 1913 by Oxford University Press. The quarterly issues of each volume1-which contain between sixty and eighty pages in a single-column format-are paginated consecutively (each beginning with page one) and dated but not individually numbered. The price of each issue was two shillings and sixpence. Publication ceased without explanation. The Musical Antiquary was among the first British music journals to deal with musicological subjects, and contained articles of historical inquiry dealing mainly with "ancient music": the Elizabethan, the British Commonwealth and Restoration periods, and eighteenth-century musicians and musical life. In addition, several articles deal with early manifestations of Christian chant, the techniques of Renaissance polyphony and topics dealing with Anglican and Roman Catholic liturgical practices. The journal's founder and editor was Godfrey Edward Pellew Arkwright (1864-1944), a tireless scholar deeply involved with the study of music history. Educated at the University of Oxford, Arkwright prepared the catalogue of music in the Library of Christ Church, Oxford, and edited several important publications: English vocal music in twenty-five volumes of the Old English Edition, and Purcell's Birthday Odes for Queen Mary and his Odes to St. Cecilia, both published by the Purcell Society.2 The main contribiitors to The Musical Antiquary are well-known scholars in the field of British musicology, all born in about the middle of the nineteenth century and all active through the first quarter of the twentieth.

Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 2002. xiv + 343 pp. $60.00 (cloth) ISBN 1-55849-327-1; $19.95 (paper), ISBN 978-1-55849-328-5. Reviewed by Jeanette Vanausdall (independent historian, Indianapolis)Published on H-Indiana (August, 2002) Writer as Witness Writer as Witness Phantoms of a Blood-Stained Period: The Complete Civil War Writings of Ambrose Bierce, edited by Russell Duncan and David J. Klooster, is a useful addition to the small assortment of Bierce collections available to students and scholars today. Bierce was perhaps the most significant American writer to have actually been a soldier throughout the war. For this reason alone he would be worth reading. But Bierce holds special interest for the student of the war because his work was so markedly different from most first-hand accounts, particularly the revisionist regimental histories that littered the literary landscape during the decades after the war. Rather than glorify the war and the soldiers who fought it, Bierce insisted upon exposing the bloodiness, brutality, stupidity, fear and cowardice to which he had been witness. Bierce genuinely deplored the war, but he also seemed to revel in his reputation as the foremost malcontent of his generation. Born in Meigs County, Ohio in 1842, Bierce's family was living in Indiana when the war broke out.

POLITICAL ECONOMY OF AMERICAN EDUCATION: Democratic Citizenship in the Heart of Empire Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University Thomas Michael Falk B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University Summer, 2012 Committee Members: Bryan Warnick (Chair), Phil Smith, Ann Allen Copyright by Thomas Michael Falk 2012 ABSTRACT Chief among the goals of American education is the cultivation of democratic citizens. Contrary to State catechism delivered through our schools, America was not born a democracy; rather it emerged as a republic with a distinct bias against democracy. Nonetheless we inherit a great demotic heritage. Abolition, the labor struggle, women’s suffrage, and Civil Rights, for example, struck mighty blows against the established political and economic power of the State. State political economies, whether capitalist, socialist, or communist, each express characteristics of a slave society. All feature oppression, exploitation, starvation, and destitution as constitutive elements. In order to survive in our capitalist society, the average person must sell the contents of her life in exchange for a wage. Fundamentally, I challenge the equation of State schooling with public and/or democratic education. Our schools have not historically belonged to a democratic public. Rather, they have been created, funded, and managed by an elite class wielding local, state, and federal government as its executive arms. Schools are economic institutions, serving a division of labor in the reproduction of the larger economy. Rather than the school, our workplaces are the chief educational institutions of our lives.
