    Nancy Drew: Location, Location, Location by Pam Horack Page 15 Nancy’s World (to me) In real estate, the mantra is “Location, Location, Location”. As in a story, the right setting can be an effective plot device and can be used to evoke specific feelings. The Nancy Drew books often used a location to create the backdrop for the mysterious and adventurous. As a child, I was able to use my grandparents’ home as a true reference for many of the Nancy Drew settings, thus bringing the stories to life and turning me into Nancy Drew Green’s Folly, located in Halifax County, Virginia, was home to my maternal grandparents. As my mother was raised there, our family visited frequently. The estate has served many functions through the years: county courthouse, a racetrack, a farm, and currently an 18-hole golf course, which was originally developed by my grandfather, John G. Patterson, Jr. As a child with a vivid imagination, my senses were aroused by mysterious features of the old home. This was the world of my childhood and it made a natural location for many of my adventures with Nancy Drew. As many of the Nancy Drew stories involved large old estates, my mind easily substituted the real world for the fictitious. LAPIN "It would be a shame if all that money went to the Tophams! They will fly higher than ever!" Thus begins the first book in a series of titles that has whetted the literary appetites of young readers for well over fifty years. The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene was to set the tone of juvenile adventure stories that is still leading young folks into the joys of reading the standard classics of literature. Carolyn Keene has been writing the series books chronicling the adventures of Nancy Drew and the Dana Girls since 1929. With over 175 titles published, the author is still going strong, presently producing over fifteen new books each year. Her titles have been translated into at least twelve different lan­ guages, and sales records state that the volumes sold number in the hundreds of millions. More than the mystery of the endurance of such unlikely literature is the question of who Carolyn Keene is and how one person could possibly be the author of such a record number of "best-sellers." Numerous literary histories offer conflicting information concerning the life of Ms Keene. The one common fact is that there exists no actual person by that name. Carolyn Keene is a pseudonym for the author of the series books. Carolyn Keene was Edward Stratemeyer. Another source says that she was Harriet Adams. Yet others say that she was Edna Squire, Walter Karig, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrad, Margaret Scherf, Grace Grote, and a plethora of others.

    75 Years of Mystery Unfolds: Part 2 The Case of the Cliffhanger Conundrum By Jennifer Fisher, ©2005 Nancy Drew cliffhangers were the proverbial hook–readers were instantly caught up in Nancy’s world, eager to turn the page, wondering What would Nancy Drew do? Nancy Drew mysteries were real page turners–a legacy that Edward Stratemeyer helped foster by repeatedly using this literary device in his stories–a device which ghostwriters like Mildred Wirt Benson and Walter Karig used with such flair. Early cliffhangers from the 1930s were intensely melodramatic and suspenseful, imploring us to journey onward with Nancy to the climactic end. By the 1970s, cliffhangers were much less descriptive, choppier and more action-oriented cliffhangers were packed into each book. The 1970s cliffhangers had a Scooby Doo-esque quality, lacking in high melodrama with a comedic quality at times. Nonetheless, though page turners, these cliffhangers were much less evocative of suspense at its best when compared to the earlier volumes in the series. In the 1930s, Nancy was locked in a closet and left “to starve” (The Secret of the Old Clock, p. 132), Nathan Gombet, whose “face was convulsed with rage,” was poised to strike Nancy (The Hidden Staircase, p. 7), Nancy and her chums were “hopelessly lost” in the mountains in The Secret at Shadow Ranch (p. 134), Nancy boldly confronted villain Felix Raybolt after dark at the scene of the crime and demanded “What are you doing here?” (The Clue in the Diary, p. 179), villain Frank Semitt “with a snarl” intended to topple the ladder Nancy swayed on at the tower window in The Sign of the Twisted Candles (p.
