Rising Fifth Grade Summer Reading Rising Fifth Grade summer Summer Reading 2020 The Parent Council provides our Spring Book Fair each year. Our vendor, Logos Christian Book Store in Green Hills, gives us the lowest possible price on the books as well as a percentage of the sales. The following books are suggestions by our teachers to help your child prepare for the upcoming year. The incentive for summer reading in fifth grade is to instill the joy of reading in our students. The goal is for each child to read at least 4 books, 2 required and 2 additional. The following books are read in class as novel studies and should be avoided: Bridge to Terabithia, Prince Caspian, Where the Red Fern Grows, Wonder, and Voyage of the Dawn Treader. KEENE, Carolyn Harriet Stratemeyer Adams Geboren: 1892. Abstract MERRILL, ASHLEY CHRISTINE. The Evolution of Nancy Drew, Cultural Icon: Readers, Writers, and Fanfiction Authors. (Under the direction of Mary Helen Thuente.) Nancy Drew is widely recognized as an influential American cultural icon. In this paper I make a detailed examination of Nancy's initial characterization as girl sleuth in the first ten books of the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, published in the 1930s. I spend another chapter examining the initial volumes of later Nancy Drew series books, specifically the 1960s rewritten texts, the 1980s-90s Nancy Drew Files series, and the contemporary Girl Detective series. My penultimate chapter discusses Nancy Drew as realized in fanfiction, or stories written by readers and fans. My emphasis is on explaining Nancy's appeal as a cultural icon and the ways fanfiction authors reinvent and appropriate that icon for their own purposes in stories. To this end I cite fanfic writers and readers' response to why they read and write Nancy Drew fanfiction, and I analyze the content and function of a sample of stories written by Nancy Drew fans. I conclude that Nancy's appeal and the basis of her status as cultural icon is due to her unique nature as a figure frozen in transition between adolescence and adulthood, along with her more conventionally admirable traits. Her Everygirl appearance when removed from that unique matrix makes her extremely adaptable to readers for their own purposes, both within the context of fanfiction and without. • Rising Seventh Grade
6th into 7th Grade 2021 Summer Reading List ============================ Prepared by Liz Perry, SFWS Librarian for Class Teacher Alylssa Steller A Note to Parents: I include here some valuable advice from former librarian, Ann Grandin: This is the summer, if it hasn’t happened already, when children show a natural interest in “those shelves around the corner.” Known as the Young Adult section, the inventory is often housed on a different floor or a very separate area from Juvenile Fiction in public libraries, and, if space allows, is equally segregated in independent bookstores. This separation is created by children’s literature specialists who recognize the need for children – roughly 12 through 14 – to avoid moral and social challenges in literature they may be unprepared to navigate. Topics might include harsh language, drugs, sex, mental illness, suicide, and/or domestic violence. Young adult literature can send powerful and beautifully crafted messages, but these pictures need to be received at the right time. You the parent, know your child and are the best judge of readiness; if there seems to be a special need for a particular topic, consider reading the book with your child so there can be a shepherded conversation about its content; in other words, make yourself “the wise elder” who is sometimes missing from the book. Remember, too, that your interpretation of a book will be decidedly different from that of your child’s; be prepared to converse from his or her point of view to receive a privileged perspective on how he or she views the world. Alcott, Louisa May Little Women Grown-up Meg, tomboyish Jo, timid Beth, and precocious Amy.

Pathfinder Assignment: Hallie Fields I. Introductory Essay Nancy Drew is a beloved book series that was aimed at teenage girls. The first Nancy Drew book was published in 1930 and the series still continues to grow. This bibliography will cover the history of Nancy Drew, the people behind the series, and feminist critiques of Nancy Drew. Nancy Drew was one part of the Stratemeyer Syndicates that were created by Edward Stratemeyer. This bibliography will include information about the Stratemeyer family and the Nancy Drew series place in Stratemeyer Syndicate history. This bibliography is compiled with the imagined scenario of an undergrad History or Women and Gender Studies major’s research paper in mind. This bibliography will, therefore, select materials that are appropriate for a college-aged student that present scholarly works. Peer reviewed sources and other academically sound materials will be considered for this research project. The sources used in this bibliography aim to help an undergraduate student analyze Nancy Drew through a feminist lens with an understanding of previous critiques and history of the series. The scope of this topic will be limited to a historical and feminist perspective. Sources that are purely literary on the Nancy Drew series books’ content will not fit the scope of this topic. II.
