Making Music Grow since 1975 Notations Fall/Winter 2010 Barbara and John LoFrumento Establish A Program to Assist Autistic Students ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento and his wife Barbara, have established The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award to support music and music therapy programs for autistic learners. This award, which was recently presented to the Music Conservatory of Westchester Music Therapy Institute, will enable the Institute to expand its music therapy program and provide weekly music therapy sessions to special needs students in the Eastchester, NY school district. Students will have the opportunity to work with music educators on songwriting and instrumental instruction. Music therapy uses the power of music in a focused way to accomplish growth, learning, healing and change. Elements of music such as repetition, form, dynamics, tempo and rhythm specifically address the learning needs of children with autism creating an environment of attention, creativity and expression. The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award will make it possible for the Institute to reach out to those in the community who might otherwise not have an opportunity to experience music and its healing abilities. For those children, music therapy will make a significant difference in Barbara and John LoFrumento their lives by addressing important areas including communication and language development, socialization, emotional development and self expression, as well as helping to develop their musical skills and talents. The ASCAP Foundation Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award To honor his legacy, the family of Joe Raposo has established The ASCAP Foundation Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award, which will support emerging talent in the area of children’s music.

2013 ANNUAL REPORT The ASCAP Foundation, established in 1975, is a publicly supported charity dedicated to supporting American music creators and encouraging their development through music education and talent development programs such as: songwriting workshops, scholarships, awards, community outreach and humanitarian programs, and providing grants to other 501(c)(3) organizations engaged in educational programs for aspiring songwriters and composers. The ASCAP Foundation supports programs in all musical genres that are national and regional in scope. Over the years, The ASCAP Foundation has developed and established its own scholarships, awards and music education programs and has collaborated with other organizations to meet its objectives. Phil Furia from Skylark: The Life and Times of Johnny Mercer TO OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN, Johnny Mercer was "the most perfect American lyricist alive. American. Pure American." To Yip Harburg, who grew up in wretched poverty on the Lower East Side but went on to write "Over the Rainbow," Johnny Mercer was "one of our great folk poets," whose lyrics had their roots in the prose of Mark Twain and the songs of Stephen Foster. "Mercer had an ability to write from roots different from mine," said Hal David. Even though David has penned such folksy lyrics as "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" he envied Mercer's regional roots: "He was southern. I am Brooklyn. And he created the most wonderful images. He wrote lyrics I wish I could write, but I knew I couldn't because I came from a different base." Another New York writer, Alec Wilder, once visited Mercer at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. As Wilder got out of his cab, he saw Mercer in the backyard, feeding the birds. "Good God," Wilder thought, "the man who wrote 'Mr. Meadowlark,' 'Bob White,' and 'Skylark' really does love birds." What also set Mercer apart from his fellow songwriters was his successful career as a singer, a harbinger of songwriters, such as Paul Simon and Bob Dylan who perform their own songs. While Mercer was a consummate interpreter of his own works, however, he preferred to sing the songs of Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and others he had loved as a boy.

Come Fly With Me: The Songs of Sammy Cahn Sammy Cahn (June 18, 1913 – January 15, 1993) was a lyricist who co-wrote an extraordinary number of hit songs for Hollywood, Broadway, and Tin Pan Alley including: "I Fall in Love Too Easily," "I've Heard That Song Before," "It's Magic," "The Tender Trap," "Come Fly with Me," "The Second Time Around," "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry," "The Christmas Waltz," "It's Been a Long, Long Time," "Saturday Night Is the Loneliest Night of the Week," "Come Dance with Me," "Teach Me Tonight," and "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!" Cahn was born Samuel Cohen on the Lower East Side of Manhattan after his parents had emigrated from Galicia in Europe. He and his sisters all studied music, and as a teenager, Cahn joined a Dixieland band which toured in the Catskills. He later worked at a meat-packing plant, as a movie-house usher, a freight-elevator operator, and a restaurant cashier to make ends meet while pursuing a career as a lyricist. One of his early successes was co-writing songs for short films at Warner Brothers’ studio in Brooklyn, and he also created special material for up-and-coming performers such as Milton Berle, Danny Kaye, and Bob Hope. Cahn enjoyed hit recordings by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Doris Day, the Tommy Dorsey band and many others — winning four Academy Awards for Best Song in a Motion Picture: "Three Coins in the Fountain," "All the Way," "Call Me Irresponsible," and "High Hopes." Singer Will McMillan and jazz pianist Joe Reid will share an hour of Cahn’s great songs plus a few stories about the man himself and how he came to write so many hits! Will has sung at venues such as Scullers Jazz Club, Sanders Theatre, the JFK Library, Inn on Newfound Lake (NH), Hi-Hat Club (RI), Westbeth Performance Center (NYC), Spring Island (SC), and Yin Par Le Garcon Chinois (Shanghai).

“People”—Barbra Streisand (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2016 Essay by Gwendolyn Thompkins (guest post)* Original album cover Label Barbra Streisand Anne Bancroft said no. That’s how Barbra Streisand came to play the lead in the 1964 Broadway musical “Funny Girl.” And that’s how the world got to know “People”--a show-stopping ballad in the play’s first act. Streisand sang other, bolder delights from the original score--“I’m the Greatest Star,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “The Music That Makes Me Dance.” But the number most everyone remembers is “People.” Or, more specifically, most everyone remembers the song’s peculiar opening and closing counsel: “People, who need people, are the luckiest people in the world….” Composer Jule Styne once asked lyricist Bob Merrill what the words to the song meant. “I don’t know,’’ Merrill reportedly said. “But it sounds good.” More importantly, it sounds like Streisand--romantic, thoughtful, intense. “People” reflects her glorious voice--nimble and, yes, buttery--capable of beguiling intimacies and grand jetés of feeling. Styne wrote the music with Streisand in mind, saying, “I must have this voice!” And Merrill’s words, no matter how enigmatic, captured a universal truth about the human condition that Streisand (after she also inquired about the lyric) knew how to communicate. “People” was bespoke of the highest order. The song fit her perfectly because it was tailored that way. So was the rest of the “Funny Girl” score. And the Tony Award-winning Bancroft likely knew that when she reportedly said, “It’s not for me.” Even as a teenager, Streisand’s voice seemed to have sprung fully-formed from some distant star.

A Fine Romance Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 1910–1965 “ We must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” When Barack Obama made this statement in his inaugural address of January 20, 2009, he was paraphrasing the lyric Dorothy Fields wrote for a Jerome Kern song that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers joyously dance to in the 1936 movie Swing Time: “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again.” Americans have always responded to the optimism, no less than the wit and sophistication, passion and verve, of the jazz standards, ballads, torch songs, anthems, up-tempo dance numbers, and showstoppers that make up the American songbook. Like Hollywood movies, with which they have a symbiotic relationship, the songs beguiled multitudes and prove, in their enduring appeal, that the goals of popular culture and high artistic achievement can happily coincide. The best songwriters combined a genius for melody, ingenuity at fitting the right words to it, and the ability to connect with a wide audience. A remarkably high percentage of them were Jewish by birth and heritage. Some (Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers) came from relatively prosperous families with the foresight to immigrate in the 1860s or earlier. Others were children of refugees from Eastern Europe, who risked everything to escape pogroms and persecution in the years just before and after the turn of the century. Following the assassination of a liberal Czar in 1881, cruel anti-Semitic decrees made life miserable for Russian Jews—just as depicted in the 1964 musical Fiddler on the Roof (music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick).
