Book Review Chris Hedges, Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and The Triumph of Spectacle. New York: Nation Books, 2009. Pp. 232, cloth, $24.95. Reviewed by Herb Hirsch, Professor of Political Science, L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, Virginia Commonwealth University; Co-Editor, Genocide Studies and Prevention At first glance, a book that is a critical analysis of US culture might appear not be relevant to the study and prevention of genocide. This would be a profound mistake. Chris Hedges’ analysis is not only applicable but important. Hedges, author of the National Book Critics Circle–nominated War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2002), has given those who consider themselves genocide scholars much to think about and to apply to their concerns. -

Redfield • David Tracy About the Committee The John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought was established as a degree granting body in 1941 by the historian John U. Nef (1899-1988), with the assistance of the economist Frank Knight, the anthropologist Robert Redfield, and Robert M. Hutchins, then President of the University. The Committee is a group of diverse scholars sharing a common concern for the unity of the human sciences. Their premises were that the serious study of any academic topic, or of any philosophical or literary work, is best prepared for by a wide and deep acquaintance with the fundamental issues presupposed in all such studies, that students should learn about these issues by acquainting themselves with a select number of classic ancient and modern texts in an inter- disciplinary atmosphere, and should only then concentrate on a specific dissertation topic. It accepts qualified graduate students seeking to pursue their particular studies within this broader context, and aims both to teach precision of scholarship and to foster awareness of the permanent questions at the origin of all learned inquiry. -

FOREWORD TO THE PRINCETON CLASSICS EDITION ••• Politics and Vision: Continuity and Innovation in Political Thoughtis both one and two books, written by both one and two political theorists. A changed world and changed thinker divides the 1960 edition from the 2004 expanded edition, the latter now ap- pearing as a Princeton Classic. First published when Sheldon S. Wolin was a young Berkeley professor, Politics and Vision quickly rose to prominence for its luminous interpretations of canoni- cal theorists and probing reflections on the shifting meaning and status of politics and political theory across Western history. A scholarly work of breathtaking scope composed in accessible literary cadences, it was exemplary of what Wolin would term “political theory as a vocation” in his 1969 essay by that name.1 Intentionally recalling Max Weber’s stipulations for scholarship and political leadership in his “Vocations” essays, and especially Weber’s contrast between career and calling, Wo- lin’s formulation of theory as a vocation distinguished political theory’s classic value from current disciplinary conventions. He sought especially to reestablish political theory’s longstanding concerns with res publicae and res gestae—concerns he termed as “irreducible and natural to the political theorist as a concern for health is to the physician.”2 With its immense erudition and close readings trained on the problematic of “the political,” Politics and Vision embodied Wolin’s insistence on political theory as “pri- marily a civic and secondarily an academic activity…a critical engagement with col- lective existence and with the political experiences of power to which it gives rise.”3 This tasking of political theory invites the sort of reading Wolin frequently performed when he taught. -

Marxism and the Solidarity Economy: Toward a New Theory of Revolution Abstract In the twenty-first century, it is time that Marxists updated the conception of socialist revolution they have inherited from Marx, Engels, and Lenin. Slogans about the “dictatorship of the proletariat” “smashing the capitalist state” and carrying out a social revolution from the commanding heights of a reconstituted state are completely obsolete. In this article I propose a reconceptualization that accomplishes several purposes: first, it explains the logical and empirical problems with Marx’s classical theory of revolution; second, it revises the classical theory to make it, for the first time, logically consistent with the premises of historical materialism; third, it provides a (Marxist) theoretical grounding for activism in the solidarity economy, and thus partially reconciles Marxism with anarchism; fourth, it accounts for the long-term failure of all attempts at socialist revolution so far. -

Introduction to the 2017 Edition Sheldon Wolin was our most important contemporary political theorist. He gave us a modern vocabulary to describe our decayed democracy and the poi- sonous effects of empire. He was a scholar who detested orthodoxies, rooted his understanding of democracy in the ancient concept of the Athenian demos and believed, like Max Weber, that politics was a vocation. Ralph Nader gave me Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism when it first came out in 2008. Nader, who has been fighting the abuse of corporate power longer and with perhaps more success than any other American, called it a “masterpiece.” Wolin cap- tured the political mutations caused by neoliberalism and coined the term “inverted totalitarianism” for the novel political and economic system it had spawned. He foresaw that this system of inverted totalitarianism would, as it has, eventually crush or hollow out our democratic institutions and give rise to an authoritarian or even totalitarian regime. Inverted totalitarianism is different from classical forms of totalitarianism. It does not find its expression in a demagogue or charismatic leader but in the faceless anonymity of the corporate state. Inverted totalitarianism pays out- ward fealty to the facade of electoral politics, the Constitution, civil liberties, freedom of the press, the independence of the judiciary, and the iconography, traditions and language of American patriotism, but it has effectively seized all of the mechanisms of power to render the citizen impotent. “Unlike the Nazis, who made life uncertain for the wealthy and privileged while providing social programs for the working class and poor, inverted totali- tarianism exploits the poor, reducing or weakening health programs and social services, regimenting mass education for an insecure workforce threatened by the importation of low- wage workers,” Wolin wrote. -

Increasing numbers of people on the left and the right are experiencing an unnerving belief that the world put together in the West since the end of W.W.2 is unraveling. Something big is afoot. In the words of one Nobel Laureate ‘the times, they are a- changin’.’ Citizens are unsure about what it all means. A world that used to make sense no longer does. In North America there is a continuous analysis that seeks to make sense of what is happening. Varieties of books and articles are pouring out in the multiple attempts to provide explanations for unprecedented times. One of those books is Chris Hedges’ The Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt (Knopf Canada, 2015). This book is a part of this growing literature calling for radical change. -

Kimball 1 Copyrighted by Jamie Eric Teeple 2018 2 Abstract In this dissertation, I critique STEM education as the educational apotheosis of neoliberal governmentality and reconceptualize it for an egalitarian democracy. Part and parcel of this analysis is considering Wendy Brown’s (2015) contention that the contemporary subject is interpolated by the prevailing norms of neoliberalism as a governing form of political rationality and thus expresses itself not as a political subject, or “homo politicus”, but as a self-investing and economized subject, or “homo oeconomicus”. I hypothesize that students as emergent homo oeconomicus seek out STEM education as the best means for survival within a technocratic marketplace. In this sense, STEM literacy is rendered the paradigmatic form of symbolic capital within the capitalist state. The thrust of my critical response to this milieu figures left-libertarian or social-anarchist thought as the diametrically opposed and thus apposite ideological rejoinder to the right- authoritarian status quo, not only for political activism writ large, but also for educational reform proposals and even the preparation of preservice teachers. In the end, my research is an attempt to explore how students’ narratives can assist critical educators with leveraging pedagogy into a potent means for cultivating within educational systems the social imaginaries and political subjects needed to eschew the aims of a right- authoritarian status quo and embrace the aims of an egalitarian, left-libertarian society-to- be. -

The collapse of the communist systems signalled the exhaustion of the ideology of Enlightenment revolution, the view that radical social change could be achieved by the application of reason and the political will of enlightened elites. -

Bernie Out of the Closet: Sanders’ Longstanding Deal with the Democrats Paul Street, CounterPunch | Jul 21, 2015 I am glad that the left intellectual and activist Chris Hedges does not support the Bernie Sanders campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. As Hedges explained in a recent interview on the Ralph Nader Radio Hour, Sanders’ candidacy lends undeserved credibility to the thoroughly corporatized Democratic Party. Sanders has pledged that he will support the corporatist military hawk Hillary Clinton in the 2016 general presidential election. Sanders stirs up legitimate progressive energy and popular anger and then “funnels it back into a dead political system,” Hedges observes. Sanders fails to confront the American Empire and military state, and, Hedges adds, has unforgivably “abandoned the Palestinians and given carte blanche to Israel.” I agree on all scores. Hedges’ reasoning is consistent with my own recent writings on interviews on the Sanders presidential sensation. I do, however, want to raise one quibble with Hedges on Sanders’ history – a difference that makes Hedges’ case against Sanders even stronger. “I don’t understand,” Hedges told Nader: “He [Sanders] fought the Democratic establishment in Vermont his entire career. Now he has sold out to it.” Sanders’ 1990 Deal with the Dems Sanders did not “f[i]ght the Democratic establishment in Vermont his entire career.” As the left University of Vermont philosopher Will Miller noted in a 1999 essay recounting left peace activists’ occupation of then U.S. Congressman Bernie Sanders’ Burlington, Vermont office to protest Sanders’ support of the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and the ongoing U.S.
