The ASK Community and Charity Fundraising event held on 21st August 2018 at the Robin Hood Theatre in Averham was a great success. A more detailed article with information on the funds raised for Beaumond House Hospice, Raffle and competition winners, will follow in the October edition of The Plough Magazine, (all prizes for the raffle and Garden Club competitions where presented, collected or delivered on the night). In the meantime the ASK Garden and Social Club would like to send their thanks to all the participants and sponsors and for all prizes donated to the Charity Raffle AND to Maureen Justice and Ron Watkins, our competition judges. Also our thanks to Sue Saddington, leader of the County Council for giving her time to attend our event, judge and present the prize for our Best Vase of Flowers Competition and I am sure everyone would also agree that the WI did a splendid job in providing the Pimms and Canapes.

SOUTHWELL PLOUGHING MATCH AND SHOW TO BE HELD AT LITTLE CARLTON NG23 6DX ON 29TH SEPTEMBER 2018 The 2018 Southwell Ploughing Match and Show will commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War when 100 years ago this country celebrated the end of over four years of conflict. But those celebrations were tinged with sadness. Many families lost sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, parents ... and farming communities lost a large part of their workforce, not only the young men and women but their horses and mules too - these losses transformed the way that farmers worked to fulfill the ever increasing need for food. The events of WW1 drove technology forward at an unprecedented pace forcing a seismic change in society as a whole, but especially so in farming practice and crop and animal husbandry. Ever resourceful, British farmers embraced the introduction of machinery and technological advances and rose to the challenge of feeding the nation during conflict and beyond to the modern day. The 2018 show will give us an insight into what these changes meant to the local community and how better to do that than with real life infantry and cavalry demonstrations, faithfully restored machinery and equipment, and even Deborah II, a working British Army MK IV tank! You will also see modern day farm tractors and machinery working alongside their vintage predecessors, todays prize livestock breeds still carrying genes from their ancient cousins, horticultural produce developed from heirloom varieties - and at the Farmer’s Market you will be able to see, and taste, the food that our farmers produce every single day to feed this nation. Photo: Adrian Hatton Enjoy also, the huge array of agricultural machinery, trade and craft stands alongside the produce entries and more than 100 Ploughing and hedging competitors, each vying for top spot in their respective classes. It’s a really good day out for all the family and your opportunity to take part in one of Nottinghamshire’s finest rural events of the year, come and join us at Little Carlton on 29th September. Admission: Adults - £10.00 (advance tickets, online £8.00); Under 14’s – FREE Tickets available from: the website http://www.southwellploughingmatch.co.uk Hilary Snell – 07970 389182; John Allan – 01636 612218; John Miller – 07966 519793; Adrian Hatton - 07885 460270

19 September 2018: Charles Caudwell Heritage Trail Our next evening walk will start at the Final Whistle pub, located on the edge of the Southwell Trail and will do a circular sweep up the Southwell Trail and back down the Robin Hood Way. It’s a 2.5 mile / 1.5 hour meander as far as Maythorne before the circular route twists us back to base. We will start and finish in the Southwell Trail car park, right beside the Final Whistle Pub, meeting at approximately 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. The Final Whistle is an excellent pub to sample from a large range of quality cask ales and ciders. Food wise, they do very light bar snacks, so we suggest eating at the Hearty Goodfellow or similar, if you wish to partake in an evening meal. We will need to eat, so would welcome anyone to join us! You can drop me a call / text / mail (07974 957 684 / [email protected]) if you are thinking of coming, but there’s no pressure to do so. If you decide last minute to join in the jaunt, we’ll see you there at 6.15pm. Happy walking—Debs Christmas Meal – Tuesday 4 December 2018, Bromley Arms, Fiskerton We enjoyed last year’s Christmas meal out soooo much (many thanks to Barbara and Trevor), that we decided to do it again this year. Steve Emeny has kindly organised a bash for Tuesday 4 December 2018 at the Bromley Arms, Fiskerton. Drinks at 7.00pm for dinner at 7.30pm. Menu to be finally agreed but 3 courses plus Tea / Coffee and a mince Pie. Cost 21.95. If you can make it, you just need to pop a £5 per head deposit to Steve before the end of September 2018, and then pre- choose your food by December 1st. As a fair number of folk are involved in both the Walking group and the Gardening club, we have also opened this up as a joint get together for groups for Christmas. We have a maximum head count of 35 people! All those interested, please pop an email or call/text through to Steve on [email protected] or 07889 486 260. Hope to see you there!!

Open Churches Weekend: 7th and 8th July 2018 ‘Open Churches’ weekends are an annual event held every July. This year both Averham and Kelham Churches were open for visitors on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July, as were the churches in North and South Muskham and many others across the Diocese. At Averham, 22 visitors came along to hear Rob Starr play the Binns water-powered organ—one of only two in the country that works in this way. Rob played a very varied programme of music and one or two visitors tried out their own skills as organist as well as enjoying his performance. Kelham had a total of 84 visitors, all of whom were moved by the sight of our ‘Ghost-Army’. The 30 silhouettes represent the 7 villagers and 23 students and former from the Society of the Sacred Mission who lost their lives in World War One. There was also the opportunity to find out more about the 3rd Duchess of Rutland’s connection to Kelham as well as the new organ that’s waiting to be installed—more on this work in next month’s Plough. Jenny Quickmire has already thanked Rob Star, Marion Ellis and Ron Watkins for their efforts at Averham, and I’d like to thank Philip Staniforth, Anne Miller, Steve and Janet Emeny and Michael Staff for their help at Kelham. I think everyone who takes part in these really busy weekends: meeting and greeting, talking to visitors and sharing our enthusiasm for the buildings and their history. enjoys them very much despite the end-of-day aching feet and sore throats! I’m looking forward to next year already! Judith Mills

Averham Kelham and Staythorpe Parish Council July and August2018 We have had two meetings since the last edition of The Plough. Your Parish Council has been working hard on your behalf. We have been drawing up our asset list and repairing and repainting benches and noticeboards in the villages. We have been very fortunate to have several expressions of interest in the role of Parish Councillor and in July we welcomed Jane Phil- lips-Kelly to the Council as a co-opted member of the team for Averham. Others are waiting until after the summer break. Thank you to everyone for coming forward to help us, your time is much appreciated. At the July meeting, two members of the public attended and among the topics discussed were: • Planning – always a hot topic at our meetings and Cllr Steve Emeny attended a course on this to help us in our decision making. • Cars speeding through the village of Averham. We noted that there will be a traffic survey by VIA in late August and we discussed other options. • Update on from a meeting which was attended by Cllr Cobley and Cllr Emeny. There will be testing which will start on the 29th August 2018. This may result in a higher level of noise while the new generator is com- missioned. • Potholes in our village lanes continue to be monitored and reported. It was decided to meet again on 13th August. One member of the public was in attendance on this occasion and it is good to see our residents using the Parish Council and keeping us informed of concerns. Our discussions included the following: • Planning issues. • Update on the maintenance of the defibrillators in the villages. • Our Parish Council Website, currently undergoing a revamp by the Clerk and Councillors. The next meeting is on Tuesday 11th September at 7.00 pm in the Robin Hood Theatre in Averham. Parish Clerk: Nicola Walker, 01636 674169; [email protected]

A few thoughts from Georgie Restoring the balance

This summer I have spent timing considering the balance needed in life. My time away always helps restore the balance, especially the time I spend on retreat. A holiday is summed up as; • Includes time away from normal work and responsibilities. • Could be in any location you consider fun or relaxing. • May be with other friends or family members, even the kids. • Unstructured unless you plan it. • Ends when you return home or back to your normal schedule. A retreat is summed up as; • A period of time, from a few hours, to days, or a week at a retreat house. • Time spent on your own. • A time to reconnect with God or yourself. • A programme guided by someone or giving you free time. • All practical needs catered for. Both are good for recharging our batteries and regaining the balance that has been lost in the business of life. Most people will have been fortunate enough to go away, but some may have taken a staycation. These are times to stop doing the everyday things and do something or focus on something different. Precious times to reboot our batteries and reconnect with family, friends and ourselves. A time to celebrate the wonders of our bodies and souls being connected to the earth. A time to enjoy different food, scenery or culture. Then we come home, and how often do people ask us if we had a good holiday, and we say it seems like a distant memory now, as life crowds in once again. In the month of September, the scales of life seem to rebalance as things that stopped for those summer months restart and normal rhythms of life begin. September is balanced between the end of summer and the start of autumn. September is a time for change and transformation, of giving thanks for all the fruits of the earth and of our labours. It is a time of letting go and letting die, for our inner journeys to be strengthened so that the newness of our next harvest might grow. This is what the natural world mirrors around us. However, perhaps the holiday wasn’t enough, and we still find we may have lost that balance we thought we had gained. How can we keep the balance and help ourselves regain our balance? To think about and rediscover what gives balance and happiness there is a joint venture happening this autumn with the Methodist at the Muskham Ferry in North Muskham. The Happiness Lab runs for six weeks. It gives you the opportunity to explore what psychologists, doctors and faith leaders say will make people happy. The dates to keep free are Wednesday from 7.30 pm on the 10th, 17th, 24th October and the 7th, 14th, and 21st of November.

September 2018—The Plough

Averham Church News In July we welcomed 22 visitors over the course of the Open Weekend. Just a word of thanks to those helpers that made the weekend so good. Marion Ellis did her usual floral miracles creating a lovely stand of Summer flowers. Thanks yet again to Marion and also to Ron Watkins who spent most of the weekend down at church, to Rob Starr who was a star with the organ and to all those who gave an hour or so to make sure all was kept safe. A Plea: Our church is such an architectural gem that we work hard to keep in good order. This involves preparing the church for the regular bi-monthly services and other special events. We desperately need some support with cleaning and occasionally flowers on a regular basis. Even if you are not a regular in church I am sure you wish our special church to continue to provide an important role in our village community. This involves activities beyond worship; for example, bell ringing and providing an historical interest to a wider population. Please, please could you consider lending a hand perhaps once a year? The basis for cleaning/flower rota is being responsible for a month’s worth. That sounds a lot but, in reality, would involve just a maximum of 1½ hours usually a day or two before the 2nd and 4th Sundays in preparation for the regular worship. I would be willing to support anyone until they were happy to go solo! If you don’t feel able to commit to a regular month’s worth, extra help is needed for Advent and Christmas and Harvest Festival. If you would like to help or need more detail don’t be shy. Just give me a call on 01636 555577 or email on [email protected] Another plea! Our joint Harvest Festival with Kelham, and Supper will be held on October 4th 7pm at Averham followed by supper at the Robin Hood Theatre. Can our gardeners consider contributions for this event in order to decorate the church? All edible donations go to a good cause in support of the Women’s Refuge in Newark. Looking forwards to hearing from you!! Jenny Quickmire.

Kelham Church News Last month we reported that the case for the new organ was being installed. That has now happened and work to remove the existing organ will begin on 7th September. A temporary, electric organ will be provided for services while the case and organ undergo restoration and made ready for installation. We have received two very generous grants towards the cost of the project for which we are very grateful. Other donations have been received which will almost complete the project. Our thanks to Martin Cooper for his success in sourcing funds. Altar Flowers for September: Nicola Dixon; Cleaning for September: Mrs A Miller Anne Miller
