Photo: Ewa Almqvist/IKON The General Synod, currently convened in Uppsala, continued its election meeting today. A new Central Board for the 2014–2017 term of office was elected, with Wanja Lundby-Wedin (S*) and Mats Hagelin (BA*) in the presiding committee. The new presiding committee of the Central Board of the Church of Sweden was elected today. Wanja Lundby-Wedin (S*), from the Diocese of Stockholm, was elected first vice-chair and Mats Hagelin (BA*), from the Diocese of Lund, was elected second vice-chair. The Central Board is the Church of Sweden’s highest responsible body when the General Synod is not in session. The Central Board makes decisions on general issues at national level and represents the Church of Sweden. The Archbishop chairs the board. The election meeting was concluded today. The General Synod’s ordinary meeting and the first meeting of the term of office will take place in Uppsala in September 2014. *Key to abbreviations: S = the Swedish Social Democratic Party POSK = Non-politically affiliated members of the Church of Sweden BA = A nomination group for centre/right voters that is not affiliated to a political party C = the Centre Party of Sweden KR = Christian Democrats of Sweden in the Church of Sweden ÖKA = Open church – a church for everyone FiSK = Free liberals in the Church of Sweden FK = Frimodig kyrka, literally: an open and outspoken church MPSK = Members of the Swedish Green Party in the Church of Sweden Facts about the General Synod 2014–2017Election results and the distribution of seats in the General Synod are available here (in Swedish). The 251 members comprise 125 women and 126 men; 121 of the members are new and 130 have been re-elected. The average age of the members is 54. The youngest is Jesper Eneroth, from Kronoberg in the Diocese of Växjö, who was born in 1995. The oldest is Torgny Larsson, from Gothenburg, who was born in 1938. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. Throughout the following five centuries, around 140 monastic houses (depending on how to count them) were established within the Kingdom of Denmark, the Duchy of Schleswig, the Principality of Rügen and the Duchy of Estonia. These houses represented twelve different monastic orders. While some houses were only short lived and others abandoned more or less voluntarily after some generations, the bulk of monastic institutions within Denmark and its related provinces was dissolved as part of the Lutheran Reformation from 1525 to 1537. This chapter provides an introduction to medieval monasticism in Denmark, Schleswig, Rügen and Estonia through presentations of each of the involved orders and their history within the Danish realm. In addition, two subchapters focus on the early introduction of monasticism to the region as well as on the dissolution at the time of the Reformation. Along with the historical presentations themselves, the main and most recent scholarly works on the individual orders and matters are listed. The change would entail developing a more formal approach. The change would help me to promote the spiritual development of those persons leading the congregation with me on Sunday morning. Having a more formal method would allow participants to get ready spiritually, emotionally and physically for their holy work. I realize this may be asking a lot. A few people have already told me, “We’ve tried that before…” or “That will never happen.” However, as your new rector, I believe making this change is best for Gloria Dei. To begin to make this change, I have set aside time for all persons interested in going forward to a meeting on Wednesday, August 15, either at 10 AM and 7 PM in Riverside Hall. If these meeting times are not good for you, we will schedule additional times in September. All men, women and youth are invited to attend, especially those who would like to begin participating in serving at the altar and/or altar guild and those currently doing so.
