University of Nevada, Las Vegas May 1995 ii ABSTRACT The first part of this paper is a socio-historical inquiry into various conceptions of self and selfhood from ancient to postmodern times. Part two is the product of ethnographic research conducted on the Internet which examines the simulation and evocation of selfhood in Cyberspace. Specific "Cyburgs" examined include electronic mail, newsgroups, discussion lists, and multi-user realities. While "results" as such were not expected -- nor desired -- an evocation of this particular ethnographic experience reveals that Cyberspace is the ultimate environment for the nourishment of the fragmented, multi-phrenic, contradictoiy postmodern self. Visual anonymity and lack of social status cues allow the user to experiment with different aspects of selfhood, as well as to "disguise" him/herself completely. Consistent with previous research on the increase in uninhibited behavior in computer-mediated communication, there was a significant fascination with virtual act of Cyber-sex. As a graduate student I found myself using electronic mail and the Internet more and more. I began to lose touch with those friends who weren't "online," and became increasingly close with those friends who had e- mail accounts, as well as with new "electronic" friends. I began to have very different experiences with online relationships, and there seemed to be a huge difference between what people would say and do during face-to-face conversation, and what they would write while hiding behind their computer screen. As I progressed in my studies, it dawned on me that the interactions and relationships I was experiencing in Cyberspace seemed to epitomize what I was learning about the fluid, fragmented and contradictory postmodern self. The few times I've met online friends in person they've never been how I imagined them, and many people I knew in "real life" acted differently online — and these differences appear to me to embrace a pattern of uninhibited behavior. Specifically, an experience with sexual harassment over electronic mail by a good friend who was a "perfect gentleman" in "real-life" but quite different online, has led me to wonder how,

Slade III This dissertation investigates the experiences of participants in a text-based virtual reality known as a Multi-User Domain, or MUD. Through in-depth electronic interviews, staff members and players of Aurealan Realms MUD were queried regarding the impact of their participation in the MUD on their perceived sense of self, community, and culture. Second, the interviews were subjected to a qualitative thematic analysis through which the nature of the participant’s phenomenological lived experience is explored with a specific eye toward any significant over or interconnection between each participant’s virtual and material experiences. An extended analysis of the experiences of respondents, combined with supporting material from other academic investigators, provides a map with which to chart the synchronous and synonymous relationship between a participant’s perceived sense of material identity, community, and culture, and her perceived sense of virtual identity, community, and culture.

She is also co-editor of Reweaving the World: The Emergence of Ecofeminism, a collection of essays that grew out of a conference she organized at USC in 1987. THE EARTH IS A HEAVENLY BODY: THE MYTHOPOETIC UNIVERSE OF LINDA VALLEJO Linda Vallejo’s cosmic vision narrates a mythic journey from Nepantla, the space between divided worlds (cultures, lands, states of consciousness, ideologies, identities), to an envisaged archetypal realm of light, an enlightenment, that begins to be perceived as her protagonist, Mud Woman/Earth Mother, reconnects heaven with earth via the illuminated vision of the Tree of Life.     What's An Agent, Anyway? A Sociological Case Study Leonard N. Foner Abstract. The term "agent" has been picked up, widely appropriated, and in many cases misappropriated, by technical publications, lay publi- cations, and many researchers in computer science. I examine some of the appropriations and misappropriations, talk about their reasons and implications, and delve into a case study of an agent that is used to il- lustratively define what I consider an agent to be, and why many of the current uses of the term are misleading. The agent I consider is Julia, a TinyMUD robot of the Maas-Neotek family, all of whom have been in almost constant use at several sites on the Internet for the last two or three years. I also speak at length about the sociology of such agents, what we might expect to find in the future, and why sociology is such an important aspect to consider when investigating agent-oriented pro- 1 gramming. Agents and appropriation There has been a flurry of references to "agents" in both the lay and technical press in recent months. While the idea of computational agents that do one’s bid- 2 ding goes back decades, the explosion of recent press has been astonishing. Pattie 3 Maes and her group’s work on learning interface agents has been cited in at least two dozen publications in the last year or so, many of them lay press (e.g., The Los Angeles Times, Mass High Tech or semi-technical press (e.g., MacWeek, Mac- World, etc). A symposium at MIT on agents and their programming, held in Octo- ber of 1992, drew at least a thousand participants.

Parks University of Washington, USA A b s t r a c t The virtual social worlds of the internet give people unparalleled control over the construction and presentation of their identities. Gender-switching is perhaps the most dramatic example of how people exercise this control. It occurs when people present a gender that is different from their biological sex. While gender-switching gures prominently in academic commentaries and popular writings about on-line social life, there is little systematic research on the phenomenon. On-line surveys of two stratied random samples (N’s = 233 and 202) of MOO users were conducted. The majority of participants (60 per cent) in social MOOs (popular text-based internet social venues) had never engaged in gender-switching, while the majority in role-playing MOOs were either gender-switching currently (40 per cent) or had done so in the past (16.7 per cent). More than half of those who currently gender-switched did so for less than 10 per cent of their time on-line.

    GENDER SWAPPING ON THE INTERNET Amy S. Bruckman Presented at The Internet Society, San Fransisco, CA, August 1993. ABSTRACT In text-based virtual reality environments on the Internet called MUDs, it is possible to pretend to be the opposite gender. In these virtual worlds, the way gender structures basic human interaction is often noticed and reflected upon. This paper introduces MUDs, and then presents a community discussion about gender issues that MUDs inspired. Gender swapping is one example of ways in which network technology can impact not just work practice but also culture and values. I. GENDER SWAPPING ON THE INTERNET On the television show Saturday Night Live, a series of skits concerned a character named Pat, who has no apparent gender. The audience is tempted with the promise of clues. In one episode, Pat gets his or her hair cut. A sign in the salon says that men's haircuts are $7, and women's haircuts are $9. The audience waits in suspense: when Pat goes to pay, his or her true gender will be revealed. The humor of the series lies in the fact that those hopes are constantly foiled; in this instance, Pat leaves $10 and says to keep the change. Gender is so fundamental to human interactions, that the idea of a person without gender is absurd. The audience thinks that surely some clue must reveal Pat's gender, but none ever does. Many who have never seen Saturday Night Live know about Pat.(2) The character has become a kind of cultural icon. Pat's popularity is revealing.

Smart Avatars in JackMOO Abstract Creation of compelling 3-dimensional, multi-user virtual worlds for education and training applications requires a high degree of realism in the appearance, interaction, and behavior of avatars within the scene. Our goal is to develop and/or adapt existing 3-dimensional technologies to provide training scenarios across the Internet in a form as close as possible to the appearance and interaction expected of live situations with human participants. We have produced a prototype system, JackMOO, which combines Jack, a virtual human system, and LambdaMOO, a multiuser, network-accessible, programmable, interactive server. Jack provides the visual realization of avatars and other objects. LambdaMOO provides the web-accessible communication, programability, and persistent object database. The combined JackMOO allows us to store the richer semantic information necessitated by the scope and range of human actions that an avatar must portray, and to express those actions in the form of imperative sentences.
