Thus the impact of management on two xerothermophilous terrestrial gastropod species, Zebrina detrita and Caucasotachea UNESCO Wienerwald vindobonensis, and on land snails in general, was evaluated in the vineyard area of northern Vienna. This area belongs to the buffer zone of UNESCO Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve in Austria. A total of 18 sites were investigated, including vineyard Biosphere Reserve embankments and dry meadows with different intensity levels of clearing and grub- bing in recent years. Occurrence of both target species and their ability to recolonize Mountain range newly created habitats were assessed. Snails are able to colonize new areas in direct vicinity of existing populations that are above detection level. Only annually repeated Alps clearing of meadows and embankments with originally strong shrub coverage result- ed in a visible effect. Continuous clearing efforts over 10 years were associated with Country a dense population of Z. detrita on a formerly unsuited bush-covered meadow. In contrast, vineyard embankments that were cut free just once within two years before Austria the study harboured only a few specimens of Z. -
Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland
Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland Introduction There are 50 known species of land snail found in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) which represents about half of the 100 UK species. However molluscs are an under-recorded taxon group so it is possible that more species could be found and equally possible that a few may now be extinct in our two counties. There was a 20 year period of enthusiastic mollusc recording between 1967 and 1986, principally by museum staff, which account for the majority of species. Whilst records have increased again in the last three years thanks to NatureSpot, some species have not been recorded for over 30 years. All our land snails are in the class Gastropoda and the order Pulmonata. Whilst some of these species require damp habitats and are generally found near to aquatic habitats, they are all able to survive out of water. A number of species are largely restricted to calcareous habitats so are only found at a few sites. The sizes stated refer to the largest dimension of the shell typically found in adult specimens. There is much variation in many species and juveniles will of course be smaller. Note that the images are all greater than life size and not all the to the same scale. I have tried to display them at a sufficiently large scale so that the key features are visible. Always refer to the sizes given in the text. Status refers to abundance in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55). However molluscs are generally under- recorded so our understanding of their distribution could easily change. -

A fourth one is described now as N. mennoi spec. nov. It is the fi rst record of the genus for the Peloponnese. Introduction Describing new species is facilitated considerably when there is a recent mono- graphic treatment of the genus to which they belong. Here I profi t from the revision of the Greek species of some genera of Enidae, including Napaeopsis Sturany & A.J. Wag- ner, 1914, by Bank & Menkhorst (1992). In that paper, aft er a general introduction, three species, one of which with two subspecies, are reported from Greece. During a fi eld trip with my friend and colleague Dr. Menno Schilthuizen in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese, shells of clearly a fourth Napaeopsis species were found. This constitutes the fi rst record of the genus for the Peloponnese, since according to Bank & Menkhorst (1992: 109), the nominal taxon described as Buliminus (Ena) cefalonicus var. conemenosi by Boett ger (1885: 121) from the northern part of the peninsula is not a Na- paeopsis. It belongs in the synonymy of Ena m. monticola (Roth, 1856). The new species is described below. -

An investigation of the anatomy of Limicena confirms its position as a monotypic genus in the Cerasti- dae. Phylogenetic analysis places Limicena as the most plesiomorphic member of a clade characterised by a pseudosigmurethrous excretory system, the more advanced members of which are Rhachistia, Amimopina and Edouardia. Its position at the base of such a widely dispersed, advanced clade with apparently xerophilic adaptations lends support to a dispersalist hypothesis for the extra-Afrotropical distribution of the Cerastidae. Introduction The land snail family Cerastidae comprises some fifteen genera of orthurethran land snail, representing a predominantly continental Afrotropical radiation, with endemic outliers in the Seychelles (Pachnodus), Socotra (Achatinelloides) and Australia (Amimopina), several species in India, Sri Lanka and Madagascar, and a rather scat- tered range on numerous islands in the Indo-west Pacific. The exact nature of this dis- junct southern distribution is uncertain: it may represent primarily ancient vicariance patterns or be the result of much more recent dispersal events (Mordan, 1991). The family is also of interest in showing a remarkable ‘pseudosigmurethrous’ condition, first described by Solem (1964) and unique in the Orthurethra, in which a closed secondary ureter analagous to that found in the Sigmurethra develops within the pallial cavity. -

Many studies focus on the functional drivers which have been regarded as a major force in shell evolution. There is, however, a scarcity in studies that aim at understanding shell form evolution with respect to their ontogeny. Hence, we investigated the evolution of shell form in the micro-landsnail genus Plectostoma (Diplommatinidae) from the viewpoint of shell ontogeny. We examined the aperture ontogeny profiles that describe how aperture form and growth trajectory change along the shell ontogeny, and how the aperture ontogeny profiles relate to the observed shell forms.
