The Angevin military campaigns against the Golden Horde deserve special attention, given the contradictory documentary information available. Nevertheless, compiling of all existing data allows several interesting conclusions. For one thing, the mid-XIVth century success of Angevin interventions within the future Moldavian realm seems to have owed a great deal to the weakening of the Mongolian forces at the Danube river mouth, due to specific historical circumstances. On the other hand, the total destruction of Golden Horde urban centers in the Prut-Dniester area most likely took place at the end of the 7th decade of the XIVth century, involving also the Moldavian ruler Laţcu, at the time the vassal of Louis of Anjou. ПРИЛОЗИ Radoslav Stojanović Professor, Faculty o f Law, Belgrade CROATIAN-SERBIAN CONFLICTS AND THE DISMANTLING OF YUGOSLAVIA (1) INTRODUCTION Like in other As is the case in some multi-ethnic societies, Yugoslav society, too, had t\vo facets: one is of conflict, struggle and dialectics of power; the other is of interdependence, cooperation and mutual support. Indeed, with this snapshot view, conilict appears deviant, an aberration of the system. Howe- ver, concensus and equilibrium, rather than confhct was the defining charac- teristic of the former Yugoslav society. The evidence for such an assessment is to be found in the development of the Yugoslav idea since its inception at the turn of the 19th century. Since that time on, one can observe the following conflicts: (1) The uprising in Bosnia and Herzegovina against Turkish rule, 1875-1878. The armed conflict was between the oppressed Serbs and the Moslems, who vvere the defenders of the Turkish rule. In addition, the Croatian politicians vvere campaigning against the Serbian insurrectionists fearing that the success of the uprising vvould bnng about the unification of Bosnia and Herzegovina vvith Serbia and Montenegro. (2) The 1902 conflict betvveen the Serbian and Croatian political parties in Croatia gave rise to chauvinistic pogroms against Serbs in Zagreb and other Croatian cities, organized by the Franco party, namely the party vvhich was the predecessor of the Ustashas. (3) The period trorn 1919 untrl 1939 was characterized by permanent conflict betvveen the Serbian, Croatian, Slovenian and Moslem ehtes. (4) Since the beginning of the 19th century the relationship betvveen the Serbs and the Albanians vvas one of protracted conflict.

  • Bucovina Monasteries
Bucovina Monasteries The land of Bucovina The Austrians gave the name “Die Buchenland”, “The Land of Beech Woods” to the area. Historical Bucovina was about twice its present size, but the northern part now belongs to the Ukraine as a result of the Soviet-German Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact of August 1940. What remains, forms partly the modern administrative county of Suceava. The county of Suceava is bound in the north by the Ukraine, and in the west by the Romanian region of Transylvania, with its counties Bistriţa-Năsăud and Maramureş along the ridges of the Carpathians. On the eastern and southern sides are Moldavian counties: Botoşani and Iaşi in the east, Neamţ, Harghita and Mureş in the south. Bucovina is a synthesis of the variety, harmony and beauty of Romanian landscape, its richness of relief with mountains, tablelands, gorges, hills, fields, and valleys, its rivers, streams and lakes, its forests, flora and fauna. Landmarks The impressive number of churches to be found in Bucovina, Romania, with their fine exterior and interior frescoes, have been preserved and handed down from mediaeval times, and because of their uniqueness and artistic value, were added to UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List in 1993. There is no other place in the world where such a group of churches, with such high quality exterior frescoes, are to be seen. The churches were founded, in most cases, as family burial places of princes and high nobles. Each painter, although following the canonical iconographic programme, interpreted the scenes in a slightly different way. Using colors like the famous Voronet blue, the green- red of Sucevita, the yellow of Moldovita, the red of Humor and the green of Arbore, the painters (most of them unknown) described the biblical stories of the earth and heaven, stories of man’s beginnings and of his life after death.

  • Visual Aspects of the Serbian Entrance in a New World
VISUAL ASPECTS OF THE SERBIAN ENTRANCE IN A NEW WORLD BRANKO BEŠLIN If we wished to select several key words related to the entire history of south-eastern Pannonia, today's province of Vojvodina, one of them would undoubtedly be “migration”. As far back as the prehistoric times, the plain was frequently exposed to waves of immigrants coming from the mountainous areas that surround it – the Carpathians and the western Balkans. During the Migration Period, many tribes from the steppes beyond the Carpathians crossed this area as they advanced towards the West. Similar processes were taking place in other parts of Europe as well, but in this part of Pannonia large-scale migrations continued from the 16th century until today, bringing about, among other things, several profound changes in respect to the population's ethnic, religious, linguistic and cultural identity. From the beginning of the 16th and until the end of the 17th century, the Ottoman conquest and rule resulted in a drastic diminution of the Hungarian population. The demographic catastrophe was only partially mitigated by new arrivals from the Balkans, among which the Christians, mostly Serbs, outnumbered the Muslims. After the instatement of Habsburg rule in the 18th century, these lands, devastated by war, were settled by Serbs, Germans, Hungarians, Slovaks, Rusyns, Romanians, and others, both spontaneously and as a result of systematic colonisation by the state. The region thus became remarkably multi-ethnic and it would remain as such for the following 200 years. Minor changes in that respect emerged after the First World War when it was integrated as part of Serbia, i.e.

  • The Tradition and the New Tendencies in the Decoration of Putna's Codices
European Journal of Science and Theology, September 2008, Vol.4, No.3, 19-26 _______________________________________________________________________ THE TRADITION AND THE NEW TENDENCIES IN THE DECORATION OF PUTNA’S CODICES COLLECTION Lora Nenkovska * Center for Slavic and Byzantine Studies ‘Ivan Duitchev’, 18 Prof. I. Duitchev Street, 1618 Sofia, Bulgaria (Received 15 June 2008, revised 28 July 2008) Abstract This article analyzes the manuscripts collection of the Holy monastery of Putna. The focus is put on the decorating styles represented in the liturgical codices that were written and illuminated in the monastery scriptorium during the XV-XVIII centuries. The purpose is to emphasize the main tendencies in the decorative practices represented in the discussed collection and to point out two problems. The first one, is the necessity of a vaster study based on the comparison of the decoration of this small group of manuscripts with the book production of the other scriptoria in Moldavia, Valahia and outside the Principalities, which will allow us to make more general conclusions. The second one, is the necessity of making a catalogue containing the codicological data and contents of the manuscripts treasured in Putna. Keywords: manuscripts, decorative styles, Putna, Codicology, postbyzantine art 1. Introduction The foundation of the Holy Putna Monastery (now in the North-East Romania) is connected with one of the most important periods of the Moldavian History – the rule of Saint Steven the Great and, as it refers to culture, this period could be viewed as a basic one for the cultural development of the Principality. This monastery was built and destined to become an important cultural centre.
