This offering will be of interest to any institution looking to build a primary- source reference library in the fields of Church History, Early-Modern European His- tory, Philosophy, Theology, and Church-State relations. In addition to an extensive modern academic library, Gres-Gayer’s scholarly needs re- quired access to an array of primary sources, many of which were not reprinted in any format after the 18th century. Thus, the antiquarian collection he amassed runs quite deep within the narrow time frame of his interest. Subjects include general theological and philosophical writings of the faculty of the Sorbonne, Church Histories, tracts and documents relating to Port Royal and the Jansenist controversy (including many works by, for, and against Pascal and the Arnaulds), works from the «French School» and the rise of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as well as many other ancillary works in the contemporary French intellectual scene. Condition was a prime factor as this was a working library, and as such nearly all vol- umes are in Good to Very Good condition, most in contemporary leather bindings. Individually priced.     Socialismo y Estado. El laboratorio antiestatal del siglo XIX Introducción El socialismo, como movimiento político organizado, es un fenómeno de la sociedad industrial como respuesta a la misma. La base sobre la que el socialismo fundamentó su teoría de forma más profunda, fue el nacimiento de una clase social explotada por el avance de la sociedad industrial y el capitalismo. No se puede desligar uno de otro para entender la razón de ser del nacimiento del socialismo. Desde los primeros socialistas como Owen o Fourier hasta el desarrollo de los grandes movimientos del socialismo como el marxismo o el anarquismo. Esto no quiere decir que en otros momentos históricos no existiesen pensadores que considerasen el concepto de reparto de la riqueza o la sociedad comunista como un modelo ideal de sociedad. Pero esos pensadores no constituyeron ningún movimiento organizado. Aun así muchos de los socialistas del siglo XIX basaron sus principios en esas ideas. El siglo XIX es fundamental para entender el desarrollo del movimiento socialista y que supondrá en las décadas siguientes. Durante el siglo XIX el pensamiento socialista fue constituyendo un movimiento de alternativa al modelo capitalista lo que le hará presentarse como alternativa al modelo que iba imponiendo la revolución industrial en todas sus fases. Ese movimiento socialista fue basculando desde posiciones que pretendían ofrecer una alternativa al capitalismo fundamentada en el ejemplo de la igualdad (son los casos del falansterio o del modelo cooperativista oweniano) hasta la creación de sociedades obreras y organismos supraestatales que intentaron organizar a los trabajadores para una alternativa revolucionaria. Y aunque el movimiento socialista coincidía en su conjunto en condenar el modelo económico capitalista como injusto, como modelo de explotación y de desigualdad, las diferencias fueron aflorando en el interior del propio socialismo por la alternativa y el modelo alternativo que se debía de ofrecer.

Through the 134 years since its brutal demise, the 1871 Paris Commune has remained steadfast in the historical imaginary. A shining, hopeful, yet tragic moment for the left, and a triumphantly quashed, nightmarish specter for the right, the Commune stands as a touchstone for movements and ideologies. Ranging from likening American Indians to savage Communards; to Teddy Roosevelt’s 1896 campaign threat that if elected, his opponent would govern with the vicious lawlessness of the Paris Commune; to the Communard flag’s accompanying Yuri Gagarin on the 1961 first human space flight; to the 1968 Prague Spring song “The Paris Commune is in Prague”; to the international Occupy movement’s many Commune references, the insurgency has retained its popular potency for both its champions and its disparagers. The seventy-two day revolutionary civil war continues to draw scholars of philosophy, political theory, comparative literature, art history, and history, offering explanations of its causes, context, meaning, and contemporary uses.
