It is the most magnificent view, one of which I never tire and for which I am profoundly grateful. The sunlight is breaking through the clouds and although cold, it is a beautiful Sunday afternoon. However, the beauty hides danger. The sands of the bay are shifting and treacherous and the speed of the tide – ‘faster than a galloping horse’ – is notorious. The sea and even the water of our estuary, has many faces. It can offer adventure, opportunity, danger and even tragedy. Today the water is calm and yet the forecast for later today is for the worst storm of the winter to hit our shores during the night, with threats of a severe battering of our coast and inland areas, by high winds. The media is telling us to batten down the hatches and stay indoors. Maybe this reminds us that life is not all sun, sea and sand. To the Jewish people, the sea was a symbol of chaos and unpredictability. One night, Jesus’ followers were terrified as a fierce storm hit the Sea of Galilee whilst they were out on the water. They could do nothing to stop it, just cower at the danger they knew it presented. Yet Jesus stood up, spoke to the wind and the waves and commanded them to be still – and they were. By the time this is printed, we will have celebrated the awesome events of Easter. We will have remembered Jesus’ tortuous death on the cross, the culmination of the raging storm of hate on Good Friday, the cold emptiness of the waiting time, the disciples believing that this was the end, before these same men were amazed and thrilled to see Jesus raised from death – talking, walking and eating with them. They experienced the joy and hope of a situation, in which real victory over the forces of evil that had been thrown at Jesus, had come in a way they could never have imagined. Maybe, you will have watched the TV presentation of ‘The Passion’, and seen the events of Holy week unfold on our TV screens, as the tide of hatred gathered pace, just like the turbulent, raging sea. And then, in the calm after the storm, the myth that death is the end, explodes in resurrection joy. We too live in a world, which, like the sea, is often chaotic, and in turmoil – a world in which evil rages and many suffer. Nevertheless, today as then, Jesus is still the centre at the heart of the storm, a sign of the ultimate power of God’s grace in a changing and uncertain world, bringing life, forgiveness and wholeness to those who accept the gift of himself. Have we accepted this gift? Wishing you every blessing this Eastertide, The Revd. • Porvoo Prayer Diary 2021
PORVOO PRAYER DIARY 2021 The Porvoo Declaration commits the churches which have signed it ‘to share a common life’ and ‘to pray for and with one another’. An important way of doing this is to pray through the year for the Porvoo churches and their Dioceses. The Prayer Diary is a list of Porvoo Communion Dioceses or churches covering each Sunday of the year, mindful of the many calls upon compilers of intercessions, and the environmental and production costs of printing a more elaborate list. Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year. Editorial Our annual business meeting was held at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, nth May, 1910. The attendance was unusually meagre. The officers were re-elected, and routine business attended to. Mr. A. Peel gave an account of the work in which he is engaged on the Morrice MSS. ; and it was reported that the treasurer (who was absent through indisposition) had made sub stantial progress with his important work on the Indulgence documents. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the secretary of the Congregational Union as to the possibility of an historical volume of the Congregational Lecture, in which several capable persons should collaborate, to signalize the approaching 250th anniversary of the Act of Uniformity. "' "' We give a hearty welcome to No. 3 of the " Congregational Worthies" series, issued by the Congregational Union. This is a concise but very informing life of Robert Browne, Pioneer of Modern Co11grqfalio11alism, by the Rev. Dr. Powicke. So much additional light has been shed on Browne's life and character by the researches of Messrs. Burrage and Cater that almost everything printed on the subject before 1904 may now be regarded as obsolete. Dr. Powicke has made good use of the fruits of recent research, and has studied at first hand works of Browne's that have never been reprinted. He has quietly ignored several alleged facts, which rest only on doubtful tradition, and has used his own judgement on some points on which his views will not command universal assent. In particular, he rejects Dr. Dexter's opinion of Browne's mental disorder, and also the generally received tradition that he died in prison.

  • N Church Leaders and Members Come Together for Hundreds of Special Events
TheWay The FREE newspaper of the Church in Cumbria – Special edition, spring 2018 MOVING MOUNTAINS n Church leaders and members come together for hundreds of special events MORE than 500 events across the county, an estimated 25,000 people, 33 senior church leaders and their teams from four denominations, tired but excited and hugely encour- aged church members – all this was and is Moving Mountains: God loves you more than you will ever know. Moving Mountains was launched at Penrith Auction Mart with a short ser- vice attended by five national church leaders: the Archbishop of York (the Most Rev John Sentamu), the President of the Methodist Conference (the Rev Loraine Mellor), the Moderator of the United Reformed Church General As- sembly (Alan Yates), the Vice Presi- dent of the Methodist Conference (Jill Baker) and the North West Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army (Major Drew McCombe). Then the 33 teams set off with their hosts to local churches. Each evening there were events rang- ing from talks given by people such as Warren Furman (formerly Ace of Glad- iators) and Christian illusionist Todd Alexander to pub quizzes, ceilidhs and youth events. On the Friday, many teams went into schools – about 90 in total – for collec- tive worship, Open the Book (dramatic presentations of Bible stories) and question and answer sessions. Saturday saw breakfast events, and then the teams in town and village cen- tres handing out gifts for Mothering Sunday, face painting, Christian yoga sessions, prayer couches, litter picks and guided walks. There were services for Mothering Sunday, and then there was Cumbria’s biggest ever Messy Church at Rheged, attended by more than 2,000 people.
