I am nominated because I think it is very important that there is somebody in ExCo who maintains an international overview of membership issues including the recruitment of new members and the technology that supports them. I also would like to help Servas move forward in this 21st century. What can you offer Servas and what do you hope to achieve? I would like to offer: 1. My life experience to communicate with people from (many) different cultures, also with people who are not in my comfort zone; 2. Thirty two years of experience with volunteering in boards of Amnesty International (11 y.), Netherlands Intercountry Child Welfare Organisation (6 y.), Servas Netherlands and Servas International (15 y.); 3. My enthusiasm and love to communicate with other people and - last but not least - 2 | Page 4. A lot of time and energy. In your reply, please answer the following questions: Do you have any particular skills or expertise to offer in this role? I mentioned these above. What do you think the priorities for Servas should be in your role? A reliable, an updated and a user friendly membership system. What ideas do you have to help Servas move forward? My personal view about the future of Servas? I think it is needed that we use modern technology effectively. For example: a ServasApp for mobile devices is very important. Also we should put increased effort to make many more people know that Servas does exist. And about the goal of Servas, to get World Peace, we should put more time and energy in activities to connect people (with each other and with themselves!). The joining procedure should be easier and less 'bureaucratic', without losing the 'confidence and safety features'. Membership of Servas International could be free of charge, very cheap or (like Warmshowers, BeWelcome) there should (also) be an option to donate money. I would like to exercise openness, e.g. concerning the the income and expenses of Servas International and to strive for more (financial) efficiency. What is important to you about Servas as a peace organisation? Important is that Servas is active to help build world peace, goodwill and understanding. Servas should provide opportunities for personal contacts among people of different cultures, backgrounds and nationalities. Servas can organize activities for making connections between individuals or/and establish connections between organisations with the same or similar purpose as Servas (e.g. https://cisv.org/) The websites of Servas are crucial to publish information about the activities. The slogan of Servas (and next the core values, mission and vision) should be visible. How to join, Peace Activities and how Hosts and Travelers can meet each other should be clearly described. It should be more clear how to navigate the site and there should be information about what Peace means for Servas and how Servas want to achieve its goals. Is there any additional information about you that you would like to give? Yes, MY BIOGRAPHY I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Arnoud Philippo de Jong. I was born in the western part of The Netherlands (1956). I studied physics and mathematics in Amsterdam and was teacher at high schools (ages 12 to 18) and schools for higher (or post secondary) education (ages 18 and up). Many of my students will be nautical engineer, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer or teacher at elementary schools or high schools. I had a stall on the market. We were selling Japanese food, specialized in homemade sushi. I like to travel and meet people because I am curious about other people, other countries and other cultures. In 1984 I joined Servas Netherlands and in Japan I got my first experiences with Servas. As a traveler (in 5 continents) and as a host I met many Servas-members. These experiences had a great positive impact on my life. Now, I have many friends (because of Servas) worldwide. From 1986 until 1997 I was active in the local working group of Amnesty International in my town. This is a global movement of more than 3 million supporters, members and activists in more than 150 countries and territories who campaign to end grave abuses of human rights. From 1997 until 2003 I was volunteering for the Netherlands Intercountry Child Welfare Organisation. This organisation is a member of Euradopt, an association of adoption organisations in 12 Western European countries. Up to 4.000 children receive new homes each year through these organisations. From 2003 until 2011 I was National Secretary of Servas Netherlands(including webmaster of the website of Servas Netherlands). In Argentina, Denmark, India, Poland, Spain, New Zealand and The Netherlands I participated in international Servas-meetings, including Youth Meetings. From 2012 until 2015 I was a member of ExCo (Host List Coordinator) of Servas International. On 19 October 2010 I started the Closed Facebook Group Servas International and since then I am administrator. I had many good conversations with people from all over the world. In the group are almost 1.000 3 | Page members of Servas. I would like to join ExCo in 2018 as a Membership and Technology Secretary for different reasons: - to improve the quality of the data of hosts and travelers in ServasOnline (and Dolphin); - to improve the technology (e.g., a ServasApp); - to have overview; - to monitor efficiency; - to stimulate enthusiasm; - to ensure continuity; - to take the lead. I love to communicate in a peaceful and flexible manner. For me this is essential to work efficient, effective and with pleasure in a team. I can cooperate and support people who are working to make Servas function better and make people enthusiastic for joining one of these groups (e.g., teams, commitees,...). I think that the enthusiasm of people is very necessary to work and continue to work as a good team. It would be great to work in ExCo with (a young) assistant, to support the work of the Membership and Technology Secretary. I love to work for Servas and I am willing to give time. I don't have a job and because of this I can commit to Servas. Of course I am willing to build friendship with people from whatever background. I like to support others (e.g., to build friendship) and most of the time I have a lot op patience. That is why I started the Facebook Group Servas International. I love to learn from other people. Also from people who are not in my comfort zone. To communicate and learn from people who are active in other hospitality or peace organisations is very interesting for me. I am optimistic that we can benefit from the knowledge and experience of other people! To work in the exco team is my challenge for the next three years! I realize that my experience in ExCo is an advantage, especially because I am already familiar with members of the committee and know how to work with them. I will contribute to maintain an international overview of membership issues including the recruitment of new members and the technology that supports them. Last but not least: I totally agree with the 'Job descriptions' about 'skills, experience and qualities required for SI ExCo roles'. This is also because of my experience in ExCo from 2012-2015.
