Movie Review: Sparkle Movie Review: Sparkle By Kurt Jensen Catholic News Service NEW YORK – “Sparkle” (TriStar) is a soundtrack album packaged as a motion picture. But since this is evidently a point of pride for the filmmakers, take it as an observation, not a criticism. This remake of the 1976 melodrama about a girl trio, set in 1968 Detroit, manages to be both as predictably familiar as your grandmother’s living room and as subtle as a runaway freight train. More overwrought and stale dialogue you’ve seldom heard. But the charisma of the performers and the consistently expressed desire of all the principal characters to lead moral lives hold the enterprise together. Director Salim Akil together with his wife, screenwriter Mara Brock Akil, creates a grittily authentic, pulsating period club scene. There are skinny ties on the men, bouffant hairdos on the women; everyone smokes cigarettes wherever and whenever they choose. And we’re shown the precise moment in which wearing an Afro became a political statement. The three Anderson sisters are Sparkle (Jordin Sparks), a talented songwriter too shy to sing leads; aggressively sexual Sister (Carmen Ejogo), who yearns for a show business career as a way to get out of her dead-end job at a department store; and Dolores (Tika Sumpter), who also sees performing as a means to an end. In her case, the goal is to earn enough money to pay for medical school. Their mother, Emma (the late Whitney Houston in her final role), had attempted a music career when younger. Embittered by her failure, she tries to keep her daughters toeing the line with a church-centered life. They have to conduct their club adventures on the sly. Everyone takes different paths to their respective dreams, and for a brief time, it even appears that Emma might have succeeded in keeping all of them off the stage. Sister ditches the struggling Levi (Omari Hardwick) to marry the abusive Satin (Mike Epps), a comedian who has built a career telling racist jokes to white audiences. He beats Sister and gets her hooked on cocaine. Dolores finds scholarships for med school, while Sparkle continues to receive gentle encouragement from boyfriend Stix (Derek Luke). But decision-making processes and “big” conversations do not appear. Situations simply change, either for better or worse, and the audience has to fill in the rest. Shunted to the side is a clergyman, the Rev. Bryce (Michael Beach), who ought to have advice to give, but doesn’t. Sparkle’s strongest argument to her mother is, “Why did the Lord give me this gift if he didn’t want me to use it?” The film builds to the time-honored conclusion of all show-business tales, demonstrating that it’s possible to maintain moral standards and reach one’s potential – and with stunning high notes, too. Houston’s hauntingly emotional rendition of the gospel classic “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” performed in church, is about as nice an epitaph for the singer as anyone could wish. The film contains marital violence culminating in a homicide, cocaine use, sexual banter, several racial epithets and a fleeting scatological reference. • Tyler Perry – the Trailblazer Award Waco Theater Center, 2019
TYLER PERRY – THE TRAILBLAZER AWARD WACO THEATER CENTER, 2019 On Saturday, June 1, 2019, actor, playwright and filmmaker Tyler Perry will receive The Trailblazer Award at WACO Theater Center’s Wearable Art Gala in Los Angeles. Perry’s inspirational journey from the hard streets of New Orleans to the heights of Hollywood's A-list is the stuff of American legend. Born into poverty and raised in a household scarred by abuse, Perry fought from a young age to find the strength, faith and perseverance that would later form the foundations of his much-acclaimed plays, films, books and shows. It was a simple piece of advice from Oprah Winfrey that set Perry's career in motion. Encouraged to keep a diary of his daily thoughts and experiences, he began writing a series of soul-searching letters to himself. The letters, full of pain and in time, forgiveness, became a healing catharsis. His writing inspired a musical, I Know I've Been Changed, and in 1992, Perry gathered his life's savings in hopes of staging it for sold out crowds. He spent all the money but the people never came, and Perry once again came face to face with the poverty that had plagued his youth. He spent months sleeping in seedy motels and his car but his faith - in God and, in turn, himself - only got stronger. He forged a powerful relationship with the church, and kept writing. In 1998 his perseverance paid off and a promoter booked I Know I've Been Changed for a limited run at a local church-turned-theatre.

  • GOLD TRIED 550 TIMES in the FIRE Timothy Alborn
GOLD TRIED 550 TIMES IN THE FIRE Timothy Alborn Historians inevitably face the challenge of selecting a subset of primary sources to stand for a much larger body of research. This challenge is magnified in the case of the history of ideas, where the need to provide closer readings tends to diminish that already small sample size. My article, “The Greatest Metaphor Ever Mixed,” distilled hundreds of sources from numerous genres down to a few dozen. A section on the various uses of the metaphor of gold tried in the fire, for instance, quotes twenty-eight sources that employ that metaphor, or roughly five percent of the sources I consulted. To find all these sources, I pursued two parallel tracks. The first was part of a larger project on the cultural and economic history of gold in Britain from 1780 to 1850, which will soon be published by Oxford University Press. For this project, I spent the last eight years looking for references to gold wherever they showed up: in treatises, novels, sermons, speeches, and newspaper articles, among many other sources. The bulk of my research utilized such online databases as Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Making of the Modern World, and Google Books. After realizing, a few years into this research, that gold appeared frequently and with interesting variations in numerous religious contexts, I did more targeted search in these databases (see my full list of search terms below for “gold tried in the fire”). In a blog post accompanying a different article I published two years ago in the Journal of Victorian Culture, I made a first foray into providing access to the larger cultural world that historians must curtail in order to “see the forest for the trees.” (link).

But Sparkle was the only all-white dragon in their group. One sunny day, Sparkle climbed up to the top of the mountain. He sat down on a big rock and looked out at the ocean. The mountain was on an island with long sandy beaches. Sparkle shook his head. He was worried. It was almost time for their group of dragons to fly south for the winter, and Sparkle had not yet learned to fly. His mom had tried to teach him. His dad had tried to teach him.

Posted: Mon., Dec. 28, 2009, 8:00pm PT Adler, McCarthy engulfed in WWII 'Fog' Producers option sci-fi horror comicbook 'Night and Fog' By TATIANA SIEGEL Producers Gil Adler and Shane McCarthy have optioned the sci-fi horror comicbook "Night and Fog" from publisher Studio 407. No stranger to comicbook-based material, Adler has produced such graphic-based fare as "Constantine," "Superman Returns" and the upcoming Brandon Routh starrer "Dead of Night," which is based on the popular Italian title "Dylan Dog." This material is definitely in my strike zone in more ways than one," Adler said, noting his prior role as a producer of such horror projects as the "Tales From the Crypt" series. "But what really appealed to me wasn't so much the genre trappings but rather the characters that really drive this story." Set during WWII, story revolves around an infectious mist unleashed on a military base that transforms its victims into preternatural creatures of the night. But when the survivors try to kill them, they adapt and change into something even more horrific and unstoppable. Studio 407's Alex Leung will also serve as a producer on "Night and Fog." Adler and McCarthy are also teaming to produce an adaptation of "Havana Nocturne" along with Eric Eisner. They also recently optioned Ken Bruen's crime thriller "Tower." "Night and Fog" is available in comic shops in the single-issue format and digitally on iPhone through Comixology.

  • A Review of Famous Songs of the Past
Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley.

Further, those 43 minutes of attention are typically undivided. Among all media-digital or analog-magazine readers are least likely to engage in another activity while reading.

  • The Forest of Magic & Mystery: the Wily Will-‐O-‐The-‐Whisp
SPARKLE HALLOWEEN EVENTS The Forest of Magic & Mystery: the Wily Will-O-The-Whisp David and Lisabeth Sewell McCann, Sparkle Stories PRODUCTION NOTES: This “play” is structured as a series of short performances – to be experienced by groups of people in the order given below. Each of the “stations” needs to be spaced apart – enough distance so that the action of one doesn’t distract from another. This can be performed in woods or fields or parks, or even in the classrooms and along the halls of schools. Or it could be in different houses of a neighborhood. The path between the stations can be lit with jack-o-lanterns or luminarios. At the performance’s end, there should be a table that represents the “fairy ball” with edible treats. There is a lot of “singing” and “dancing” in this show – but this in no way needs to sound or seem “professional”. The songs can be the simplest diddies – or even spoken as verses. As long as the performer is having fun, so will the children! Below is the “script”. The play is interactive, and so the language can be flexible and open to improvisation and embellishment. The logistical details, however, do need to be included and stressed – as they propel the story and the journey for our “travelers” or the children who have come to enjoy themselves. RECOMMENDATIONS: Have a volunteer parent “guide” go with each group to help direct, in case the children forget the clues or songs. Parents should join children on the walk. No unattended children.

  • Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal(25 July 1829 - 11 February 1862) Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal was an English artists' model, poet and artist who was painted and drawn extensively by artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, including Walter Deverell, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais (including Millais' 1852 painting Ophelia) and most of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's early paintings of women. Early Life Named Elizabeth Eleanor Siddall, after her mother, Lizzie was born on 25 July 1829, at the family’s home at 7 Charles Street, Hatton Garden. She was born to Charles Crooke Siddall, who claimed that his family descended from nobility, and Eleanor Evans, a family of both English and Welsh descent. At the time of Lizzie’s birth, her parents were not poverty stricken: her father had his own cutlery- making business. Around 1831, the Siddall family moved to the borough of Southwark, in south London, a less salubrious area than Hatton Garden. It was in Southwark that the rest of Lizzie’s siblings were born: Lydia, to whom Lizzie was particularly close, Mary, Clara, James and Henry. Although there is no record of her having attended school, Lizzie was able to read and write, presumably having been taught by her parents. She developed a love of poetry at a young age, after discovering a poem by Tennyson on a scrap of newspaper that had been used to wrap a pat of butter; this discovery was one of Lizzie’s inspirations to start writing her own poetry.
