• GOLD TRIED 550 TIMES in the FIRE Timothy Alborn
GOLD TRIED 550 TIMES IN THE FIRE Timothy Alborn Historians inevitably face the challenge of selecting a subset of primary sources to stand for a much larger body of research. This challenge is magnified in the case of the history of ideas, where the need to provide closer readings tends to diminish that already small sample size. My article, “The Greatest Metaphor Ever Mixed,” distilled hundreds of sources from numerous genres down to a few dozen. A section on the various uses of the metaphor of gold tried in the fire, for instance, quotes twenty-eight sources that employ that metaphor, or roughly five percent of the sources I consulted. To find all these sources, I pursued two parallel tracks. The first was part of a larger project on the cultural and economic history of gold in Britain from 1780 to 1850, which will soon be published by Oxford University Press. For this project, I spent the last eight years looking for references to gold wherever they showed up: in treatises, novels, sermons, speeches, and newspaper articles, among many other sources. The bulk of my research utilized such online databases as Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Making of the Modern World, and Google Books. After realizing, a few years into this research, that gold appeared frequently and with interesting variations in numerous religious contexts, I did more targeted search in these databases (see my full list of search terms below for “gold tried in the fire”). In a blog post accompanying a different article I published two years ago in the Journal of Victorian Culture, I made a first foray into providing access to the larger cultural world that historians must curtail in order to “see the forest for the trees.” (link).

• Story Elements
Story elements Reading Comprehension Worksheet Practice A parent or tutor should read to the student and help the student to record their answers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Stories have a beginning, a middle, and an ending. The beginning of a story tells you who the story is mostly about, and where the story mostly takes place. The characters are who the story is mostly about. The setting is where the story mostly takes place. The middle of a story tells you the things that happen in the story. The events are the things that happen in the story. The plot is all of the events in the story. The plot usually includes some kind of problem. The ending of a story tells how the problem is solved. The problem solution is how the problem is solved. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Think about these story elements as you listen to this story. The Littlest Dragon The littlest dragon on the mountain was called Sparkle, because his hide was pure white, and sparkly. Some of the dragons were blue, some were green, and some were red. But Sparkle was the only all-white dragon in their group. One sunny day, Sparkle climbed up to the top of the mountain. He sat down on a big rock and looked out at the ocean. The mountain was on an island with long sandy beaches. Sparkle shook his head. He was worried. It was almost time for their group of dragons to fly south for the winter, and Sparkle had not yet learned to fly. His mom had tried to teach him. His dad had tried to teach him.

• A Review of Famous Songs of the Past
Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley.

• The Forest of Magic & Mystery: the Wily Will-‐O-‐The-‐Whisp
SPARKLE HALLOWEEN EVENTS The Forest of Magic & Mystery: the Wily Will-O-The-Whisp David and Lisabeth Sewell McCann, Sparkle Stories PRODUCTION NOTES: This “play” is structured as a series of short performances – to be experienced by groups of people in the order given below. Each of the “stations” needs to be spaced apart – enough distance so that the action of one doesn’t distract from another. This can be performed in woods or fields or parks, or even in the classrooms and along the halls of schools. Or it could be in different houses of a neighborhood. The path between the stations can be lit with jack-o-lanterns or luminarios. At the performance’s end, there should be a table that represents the “fairy ball” with edible treats. There is a lot of “singing” and “dancing” in this show – but this in no way needs to sound or seem “professional”. The songs can be the simplest diddies – or even spoken as verses. As long as the performer is having fun, so will the children! Below is the “script”. The play is interactive, and so the language can be flexible and open to improvisation and embellishment. The logistical details, however, do need to be included and stressed – as they propel the story and the journey for our “travelers” or the children who have come to enjoy themselves. RECOMMENDATIONS: Have a volunteer parent “guide” go with each group to help direct, in case the children forget the clues or songs. Parents should join children on the walk. No unattended children.

• Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal(25 July 1829 - 11 February 1862) Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal was an English artists' model, poet and artist who was painted and drawn extensively by artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, including Walter Deverell, William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais (including Millais' 1852 painting Ophelia) and most of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's early paintings of women. Early Life Named Elizabeth Eleanor Siddall, after her mother, Lizzie was born on 25 July 1829, at the family’s home at 7 Charles Street, Hatton Garden. She was born to Charles Crooke Siddall, who claimed that his family descended from nobility, and Eleanor Evans, a family of both English and Welsh descent. At the time of Lizzie’s birth, her parents were not poverty stricken: her father had his own cutlery- making business. Around 1831, the Siddall family moved to the borough of Southwark, in south London, a less salubrious area than Hatton Garden. It was in Southwark that the rest of Lizzie’s siblings were born: Lydia, to whom Lizzie was particularly close, Mary, Clara, James and Henry. Although there is no record of her having attended school, Lizzie was able to read and write, presumably having been taught by her parents. She developed a love of poetry at a young age, after discovering a poem by Tennyson on a scrap of newspaper that had been used to wrap a pat of butter; this discovery was one of Lizzie’s inspirations to start writing her own poetry.

• THE COLLECTED POEMS of HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam
1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.
