Legislative Building 100th Anniversary Art in Residence Participants Laura Hale – Residency coordinator (announced previously) Laura Hale is an interdisciplinary visual artist working within themes rooted in the human experience and our relationship to the environment. She incorporates a wide variety of materials and techniques in the development and creation of her artwork and projects. Originally from the community of Tisdale, Laura has just returned from Toronto, ON where her work focused on engaging and creating community through the arts. Laura balances a personal artistic practice and an active community-engaged arts practice. She has held artist in residence positions with Meewasin Valley Authority in Saskatoon, the City of Lloydminster's Barr Colony Heritage Cultural Centre and the Jeux du Canada Games in Regina. Laura holds a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Regina, returned to the U of R to study visual art and spent five years as Head of Props with Regina's Globe Theatre. Robert Assie Robert Assie was born and grew up near St. Brieux. In 1997 he began his formal education in stone carving and sculpture in Weymouth, England. Assie continued his studies and carving at L'abbey de St. Antione in France under master Claude Chevenement. Since 2001 he has been a carver and educator at Tesella Stone Carvers in Saskatoon. Heather Cline Heather Cline was born in Sutherland (now a suburb of Saskatoon) where she enjoyed the contrast of living in a pseudo small town. She now lives and works in Regina, creating artwork that combines painting, printmaking and new media. She has participated in group exhibitions throughout North America, with solo exhibitions at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon and regional exhibition centers throughout Saskatchewan. -

Terry Fenton Biography
TERRY FENTON BIOGRAPHY Terry Fenton was born in 1940 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Beginning in 1958, he spent two years studying art at Regina College's School of Fine Art (now University of Regina) with Roy Kiyooka, Ronald Bloore, and Arthur McKay. Fenton then attended the Saskatoon campus to study English literature, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962. In addition to post-graduate studies at the University of Regina (1965- 1966), Fenton attended artists' workshops at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan with Lawrence Alloway and John Cage (1965), Frank Stella (1967), and Michael Steiner (1969). Fenton's career as a curator, art critic, lecturer, consultant, and writer has seen him involved in numerous galleries and organizations in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and the United States. Fenton served as Assistant to the Director of the MacKenzie Art Gallery from 1965 to 1971, and since has been frequently involved with the Emma Lake Artists' workshops, the Edmonton Art Gallery, Saskatoon's Mendel Art Gallery, and the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance. Along with Anthony Caro and Anthon Loder, he co-founded the Triangle Artists Workshop in New York in 1982. Fenton has written many articles and books on a range of artists, including Anthony Caro and Kenneth Noland. Fenton's still life and landscape paintings and documentary photography have been exhibited throughout Canada and in New York. Fenton is particularly drawn to open prairie spaces that may to some appear sparse and empty. He writes: “Because of their apparent lack of scenery, the open prairies haven't been much painted by anyone. Even painters who've flourished in Saskatchewan have preferred the river valleys in the plains or the aspen parkland and forest to the north and east. -

STORYTELLING IN PLAY: UPISASIK THEATRE REVISITED By Lon Borgerson A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Education to the Department of Graduate Studies University of Saskatchewan Department of Curriculum Studies College of Education May, 1993 ABSTRACT This is the story of Upisasik Theatre, a small high school theatre troupe in northern Saskatchewan that created, performed and toured its plays from 1978 to 1985. It is a story told by the teacher-director, and it weaves together the meanings and memories of the actors of Upisasik. The author of this narrative returned to the Cree-Metis community of Ile-A-la-Crosse in the spring of 1992 to visit and interview past students, many of whom are now community actors in a revived Upisasik Theatre Collective. Through these interviews he explored the significance of the Upisasik experience for its participants and for the local community. Field notes were used to document the work of the new Collective. The story that emerges is one of personal and social meanings both for the actors and for the teacher whp writes this narrative. It is a story of collective creation, of cultural expression, of storytelling in play. MEL REBELLION CENTENNIAL RIVER EXPEDITION • 3 « ••'• at /ffitf i tut* AN INTRODUCTION Twenty—five years ago I first visited Batoche and realised Western Canada had a history. School had taught me that history was something found in Europe, United States and possibly if you could stand the boredom, Eastern Canada. Everybody believed that Canadian History was dull. I was touched by what I saw at Batoche. The church, the graveyard, the river valley and the rows of trenches. Here men had lived and died for what they believed. Since that time I have visited hundreds of historic sites and have become fascinated with the rich cultural heritage we have in Western Canada. This project was an attempt to make people more aware. The souvenir publication is the final chapter and is being published and distributed Dn the 100th Anniversary of the hanging of Louis Riel. One hundred years ago, the Illustrated War News recorded the events (with prejudices, of course) and we have decided to use newspaper clippings to tell our story as wel 1. It was a most interesting project. There were disappointments but overall it was a great success. We resurrected the romantic sternwheeler and gave it a new use as a modern recreational craft. Without a doubt, yau will see more of these on our rivers and lakes in the future. And if the worst occurs and there is no spin-off, at least there is the satisfaction that 150 of these booklets arts now across Canada. Maybe one or two will survive until the bicentennial and someone will be inspired to try it all again.
