The arts have played an important role in the lives of Saskatchewan people for these many decades and it’s great to see this recognized in our 100th year. This year’s annual report introduces the theme PART of Our Lives, which we have adopted to highlight the importance of the arts in the daily lives of all Saskatchewan people. Regardless of where we live, our culture or our age, the arts inspire us and make the places we call home unique. The value of the arts is felt in our award winning galleries, community festivals, theatres, the work of our professional artists and also in the songs that we sing, and in the stories that tell us where we’ve been and where we are going. Art is PART of it all! PART OF OUR PROVINCE Over the past year the Board has continued to work towards making art and professional artists more accessible to individuals and communities. The much appreciated increase in funds from the Government and the people of Saskatchewan has allowed us to support more work across the province and benefit more citizens than ever before. SASKATCHEWAN ARTSSASKATCHEWAN BOARD For example, the Art At Work initiative placed artists in ten Regina workplaces to share their creative skills with workers 1 across a wide range of disciplines. Many of the participants from these residencies reported that emphasizing creativity increased their productivity, their energy level and generally Dorothy Knowles made their work experiences more positive. The Edge of the Lake Oil, charcoal on canvas The Board has moved forward in its commitment to the 1965 Indigenous communities of Saskatchewan by creating the Indigenous Bridging Arts program, the second in a suite of programs that support Indigenous arts and artists. These significant programs have helped to create opportunities for the Indigenous artists in the province while increasing public access to art. Through the Artist in the Schools and ArtsSmarts programs we have also been connecting artists with schools. Artists are an essential resource for teachers and can provide direction and assistance as schools implement the Arts Education Curriculum. Through these efforts, we are working to create more opportunities for the arts to have an impact on people in their communities and in their day-to-day lives. In 2004 the Arts Board began a review of its strategic plan. A key part of this process involves visiting communities across Saskatchewan and having conversations about what the arts mean to you, your family and your community. By the end of Jane Zednik 2005 we will have a new plan that will direct our programs, Ah… Saskatoon Summer services and goals for the next three years. It will not just be Screen print, crayon on paper 1979 a plan for the Arts Board, but an expression of the vision we all share for the arts in Saskatchewan. None of this would be possible without the support of our partners, including the arts organizations of Saskatchewan and you, the people of this province. The Arts Board has many great partners, among them SaskCulture, the Saskatchewan Arts Alliance, the Saskatchewan Centennial Office, the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation and Saskatchewan Learning. We are grateful for your support and for all we have accomplished together over the past year. Our colleagues on the Board and staff of the Arts Board continue to demonstrate their commitment to the arts in the province and their efforts are appreciated. We would like to recognize the dedication of Saskatchewan’s thousands of volunteers, and finally the artists of this province. Your hard work and contributions make the projects featured so prominently in this report successful.
