Built in 1942 by the Montreal Locomotive Works, the 4-8-4 wheel configuration is also referred to as the 4-8-4 Northern. It is referred to as a “Northern” as it was first introduced by Northern Pacific in 1926. The 4-8-4 Northern style of train served well into the 1960s. In its retirement the 6218 serves as a reminder of the days when steam was used to power the transportation of supplies or citizens across Canada, and also when Fort Erie boasted the third-largest rail yard in Canada. The 6218 was donated by CN in 1974 to the Town of Fort Erie and is currently being repaired. Repairs to the 6218 are an intensive on-going project, stage one will be completed in 2018. Stage one repairs include: confirming the stability of the track bed, survey and remove any hazardous materials, remove the boiler jacket and fiberglass insulation, complete minor repairs, remove any lose lead paint and re-paint the engine. Stage two will be completed in 2019 and will compose of installing a covering over the engine. The final stage which will include the fabricating and installing the new boiler jacket will be completed whenever funding becomes available.
