As a result, this thesis is mainly concerned with the capacity of words, iterated within the archive of social media, to haunt us— both culturally and informatically. Through hauntology, this study hopes to understand a modern discourse community that is bound by an epideictic framework that specializes in the deconstruction of the individual’s ethos via the constant demonization and incitement of past, current, and possible social media expressions. The primary goal of this study is to understand how these practices function within a capitalistic framework and mirror the performativity of capital by reducing affective human interactions to that of a transaction. -

It argues that these media can potentially enable subcultures to challenge, and possibly overthrow, hegemonic power structures that maintain the dominance of a mainstream culture. I trace the meme from its creation by Matt Furie in 2005 to its appearance in the 2016 US Presidential Election and examine how its meaning has changed throughout its history. I define the difference between a meme instance and the meme as a whole, and conclude that the meaning of the overall meme is formed by the sum of its numerous meme instances. This structure is unique to the medium of Internet memes and is what enables subcultures to use them to easily transfer ideologies in order to challenge the hegemony of dominant cultures. Dick Hebdige provides a model by which a dominant culture can reclaim the images and symbols used by a subculture through the process of commodification. -

Incels feel hatred for women and sexually active males stemming from their belief that women are required to give sex to them, and that they have been denied this right by women who choose alpha males over them. -

Co-opted and Missed Meanings in Far-Right Iconography Cynthia Miller-Idriss “Many right-wing extremists don’t understand their own T-shirts”, a VICE-Germany headline proclaimed in March 2018 (Vorreyer 2018), sum- marizing research I had conducted with youth in and around far-right scenes about the meaning of far-right symbols, codes, and iconography (Miller-Idriss 2018). I had found that German young people do not always correctly interpret the messages in symbols on T-shirts marketed to and by the far-right – even when those codes are on brands that those same youths know are banned from their schools because of their far-right ideo- logical connections. -

S T E P H A N I E B A I L E Y A Perfect (Shit)Storm: On Memes, Movements and Geopolitics It all began with a sentence: “the internet is for everyone.” But now we’re living with the reality, it’s not quite what we expected.1 The Coriolis Effect is the name of a phenomenon caused by the earth’s rotation which makes tropical cyclones swirl clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. No tropical cyclone has been known to pass the equator since the storm would have to work against its initial direction of spin, but the theoretical possibility of a crossover has not been ruled out.2 The idea of a storm that is strong enough to turn direction once it moves from one side of the world to the other came to mind when thinking about Pepe the Frog: the first meme to be classified as a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League in 2016 due to its appropriation by the U.S. alt-right, which resurfaced as a mascot for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement in 2019. Pepe is an anthropomorphic frog with a long and winding narrative arc. He debuted in 2005 as a character in Matt Furie’s comic series Boy’s Club.3 As the story goes, a specific panel launched the Pepe meme, circa 2008, in which Pepe says “Feels good man” after peeing with his trousers down.4 “By 2010,” writes media anthropologist Gabriele de Seta, “the character’s stylised expression had already become one of the most distinctive examples of American digital folklore… circulating in relatively unknown bodybuilding forums.”5 The meme was then “picked up by users of larger discussion boards like Something Awful, 4chan, and Reddit,” becoming something of a mascot for these communities, with Pepe’s image “quickly spun into an endless series of self-referential variations.”6 74 | 75 S T E P H A N I E B A I L E Y Pepe reached peak mainstream in November 2014 when American singer Katy Perry posted about Australian jetlag on Twitter with the image of a crying Pepe, followed by a bootylicious Pepe featured on singer/rapper Nicki Minaj’s Instagram that December. -

ABSTRACT This thesis presents a theory of the self as produced through processes of recognition that unfold and are conditioned by public, political spaces. My account stresses the dynamic and continuous processes of identity formation, understanding the self as continually composed through intersubjective processes of recognition that unfold within and are conditioned by the public spaces wherein subjects appear before one another. My theory of the self informs a critique of contemporary identity politics, understanding the justice sought by such politics as hampered by identity enclosure. In contrast to my understanding of the self, the self of identity enclosure is understood as a series of connecting, philosophical pathologies that replicate conditions of oppression through their ontological, epistemological, and phenomenological positions on the self and political space. The politics of enclosure hinge upon a presumptive fixity, understanding the self as abstracted from political spaces of appearance, as a factic entity that is simply given once and for all. Beginning with Hegel's account of identity as recognised, I stress the phenomenological dimensions of recognition, using these to demonstrate how recognition requires a fundamental break from the fixity and rigidity often displayed within the politics of enclosure. -

Illustrations come from several sources including literature (Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man) as well as cultural practices such as shunning and prison practices of "solitary confinement". Last, the relationship between narcissistic parents and their children resonates with the concept of negation. Using a Winnicot model, the child is "not recognized" and not heard by the parent who is absorbed with her/his own activities and fantasies and cannot mirror or consol the child. The child is abandoned. The above are examples of micro• killings that can go unnoticed yet by ignoring them we miss out on the nuances and wide spectrum of violence. Lillian K.
