“Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way. -
The Chemical Brothers: Elektrobank (Spike Jonze 1997) And
The Chemical Brothers: Elektrobank (Spike Jonze 1997) and Star Guitar (Michel Gondry 2001) Once you feel you’ve got the trust in the director, then it’s their thing and they make the video. (The Chemical Brothers – Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons) For some types of music, particularly electronic dance, there is almost a sub-genre of videos in which the artist either does not appear at all or merely makes a token cameo appearance. Specialists in this are the directors Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry who have both taken music promos in new directions, effectively finding a mass audience for experimental filmmaking. Though both directors have made plenty of videos featuring the artist as central performer, their willingness to push the boundaries of the conventions of music video has led to some interesting work. In Electrobank, Jonze used the idea of the Svengali coach training a young gymnast, based on his reading about Soviet coaches of young girls preparing for the Olympic Games. His (then) girlfriend, Sofia Coppola, appeared as the main character – a high school competitor – and had to learn gymnastics, dance and ribbonwork for the part. Jonze created a back-story for her and the other characters, where she chooses this music for her routine (counterpointed by the classical music which plays as she arrives in the hall). This short film represents a melodrama in which the young gymnast battles against a leg injury with the encouragement of both her coach and her family to narrowly win at the end. It is a simple story, told visually, mainly through exchanges of looks between characters and through the routine she performs, but what makes it memorable is the context – this is a music video. -

An Innovative Method of Weather Modification Roberto Maglione, Cristian Sotgiu Biometeorology and Space Medicine Institute, Ludes University, Lugano, Switzerland
www.orgonenergy.org il portale italiano dedicato all’orgonomia An Innovative Method of Weather Modification Roberto Maglione, Cristian Sotgiu Biometeorology and Space Medicine Institute, Ludes University, Lugano, Switzerland This paper was presented at the VII International Conference on Cosmos and Biosphere: Cosmic Weather and Biological Process, October 1-6, 2007, Sudak, Crimea, Ukraine Abstract First experimental studies of cloud and fog seeding date back to 1919, where Altberg and colleagues at the Central Physical Observatory in Leningrad started experiments both with ice nucleation in supercooled water and with snowflakes growth; on lab fog production; and on cloud seeding with electrically charged sand. In 1934 the Dutch Veraart performed the first studies on seeding clouds with dry ice. Later on in the 1950s, Vonnegut performed the first experiments by seeding clouds with silver iodide with good results. In the last decades, several operations aimed at producing precipitation, controlling hail damage, dispersing of supercooled fog and clouds over airports, and dispersing clouds cover over large areas were carried out by using chemical agents. Diverting hurricanes path was also performed. However, many often the results that were obtained were contrasting and also sometimes an inversion of the tendency in weather conditions was observed with period of intense drought in areas where rainmaking experiments were previously carried out. In parallel, in the 1950s the Austrian scientist Wilhelm Reich started investigating and experimenting a new method of weather modification aimed at restoring the natural functioning of the atmosphere characterised by periodic cycles of rain and clear weather. The fundamental principle of this method, that was called Cloudbusting, is based on the presence in the atmosphere of a pulsatory cosmic energy (called orgone energy) postulated to be responsible for major atmospheric phenomena. -

Originalveröffentlichung in: Keazor, Henry ; Wübbena, Thorsten (Hrsgg.): Rewind, play, fast forward : the past, present and future of the music video, Bielefeld 2010, S. 7-31 Rewind - Play - Fast Forward The Past, Present and Future of the Music Video: Introduction HENRY KEAZOR/THORSTEN WUBBENA "Art presses the "Stop"- and "Rewind"- buttons in the stream of life: It makes time stop. It offers reflection and re collection, it is an antidote against lost certitudes."1 Like perhaps no other medium, the music video clip is marking and shap ing our everyday culture: film, art, literature, advertisements they all are clearly under the impact of the music video in their aesthetics, their technical procedures, visual worlds or narrative strategies. The reason for this has not only to be sought in the fact that some of the video di rectors are now venturing into art or advertisement, but that also peo ple not working in the field of producing video clips are indebted to this medium.2 Thus, more or less former video clipdirectors such as Chris Cunningham or Jonas Akerlund have established themselves successfully with their creations which very often are based on ideas and concepts, originally developed for earlier music videos: both Cunningham's works Flex and Monkey Drummer, commissioned in 2000 respectively 2001 by the Anthony d'Offay Gallery, evolved out of his earlier music videos.' Flex relies on the fantastic and weightless underwater cosmos Cunningham designed for the images that accompanied Portishead's Only you in 1998. Monkey Drummer* is heavily based on the soundtrack written by the Irish musician Aphex Twin (Richard David James) for whom Cunningham had previously directed famous videos such as Come to Daddy (1997) and Win- dowlicker (1999). -
