Charles Diamond Pennywell & the Fairlanes / Sunlover's Shreveport Doo Wop to West Coast Soul By Charlie Horner With Contributions from Pamela Horner city, next to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It's always been an important music city, though it of- ten doesn't get the recognition it deserves. At one time or another, the Shreveport area was the home to important singers and musicians of all genres, including blues (Lead Belly), gospel (Ever Ready Gospel Singers), country & western (Hank Wil- liams, Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves) and rock-a-billy (Dale Hawkins), along with rhythm & blues, rock & roll and of course Cajun music. Shreveport's "Louisiana Hayride” broadcasts played a pivotal role in the music careers of both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. Shreveport was the home of Stan Lewis's Paula, Jewel and Ronn record labels and the birthplace of Nashville music mogul Shelby Sin- gleton. Shreveport was a major hub in black mu- sic's “Chitlin’ Circuit”. Still, precious little research has been done on Shreveport's 1950’s African American music scene. Charles Pennywell began singing at the age of ten but really began to take it seriously when he got to high school. Influenced by r&b vocal groups like the Spaniels, Dells, Five Royales and Five Sat- ins, Charles and some friends formed a singing group of their own. • Linda Martell, A.K.A
The Clerk’s Black History Series Debra DeBerry Clerk of Superior Court DeKalb County Linda(June 4, Martell 1941 -) Linda Martell, a.k.a. Thelma Bynem, was born June 4, 1941 in Leesville, South Carolina. One of five children, she began singing at the age of five and learned to cook for her family by the age of seven. She sang with a gospel church group with three of her bothers and later formed a trio called The Anglos with one of her sisters and a cousin; they performed at local clubs in the late 1950’s. She married in 1960 and the couple had three children. She changed her name at the suggestion of a local DJ who said she needed a better stage name. The DJ suggested she looked like a “Linda” - and Linda Martell and the Anglos were born. They released their first single in 1962, “A Little Tear (Was Falling From My Eyes)” on the Fire record label based in New York. Unfortunately, the single was never promoted and didn’t sell. They also recorded two more singles with no real financial return for their effort. Around 1966, Linda and her husband attended an Otis Redding concert in South Carolina. At one point during the evening, Otis, who had been paying particular attention to Linda, shocked the crowd (and her husband) by kissing Linda during the performance. Otis later asked Linda to go on the road with him, but her husband opined against it, fearing he would lose his wife to the popular singer. As fate would have it, Otis Redding died one year later in a plane crash while traveling on tour.

I am also grateful to Dr. Alfred Clarke and Dr. Clyde W. Franklin II, who served on my reading committee. Each of these professors have generously given me their time and support during my graduate studies here at The Ohio State university. During the time it took to conduct this study, many people helped me in various ways. First of all, I thank all the inmates who so generously contributed their musical creations to this project. Without their cooperation, this work could not have been completed. Anyone who has conducted research in prisons knows that the work cannot be accomplished without the help of many prison employees. -I thank them all, from the members of the Research Review Committee of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, who approved this research project, to the many educational personnel and correctional officers of the Ohio and Tennessee Prison Systems. iii Hundreds of other people have also assisted me during the past three and a half years. • The Big Beat: Origins and Development of Snare Backbeat and Other Accompanimental Rhythms in Rock’N’Roll
The Big Beat: Origins and Development of Snare Backbeat and other Accompanimental Rhythms in Rock’n’Roll Volume I: Chapters Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Garry Neville Tamlyn M.Mus. B.Mus. Grad.Dip.Ed. March, 1998 ii Abstract. This thesis focusses on the origins and development of snare backbeat in rock’n’roll. Some other accompanimental rhythms, such as cymbal rhythms, piano and double bass accompaniments, are investigated in order, firstly, to place snare backbeat within an accompanimental context and secondly, to elucidate some stylistic influences informing the development of snare backbeat. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One investigates references to rock rhythm in musicological, socio-cultural and journalistic accounts. Clarification of terminology and methodology used in the thesis is located at the beginning of Chapter Two. The latter half of Chapter Two details the frequency of occurrence of snare backbeat and other accompanimental rhythms in the recorded output of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, the Platters, Elvis Presley, and Little Richard. Subsequent chapters focus on the origins of snare backbeat: Chapter Three investigates the occurrence of snare backbeat in jazz styles in conjunction with the development of the drum kit; Chapter Four details the influence of rhythm and blues on rock’n’roll rhythm; and Chapter Five explores the rhythmic roots of the rock’n’roll backbeat in gospel and country and western musical styles. Conclusions are presented in Chapter Six. The thesis also contains four appendices.

King, Howlin' Wolf, Ike Tur- ner, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich and Roy Orbison – artists who changed the way popular music was made. With a staff of no more than one or two people, he did this from a small store- front studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Others who made their first recordings at SUN include Rufus Thomas, Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Little Milton, Conway Twitty, Charley Pride and many more! In 1952, after producing one of the biggest pre-rock 'n' roll hits, Jackie Brenston's Rocket 88, Sam Phillips launched SUN RECORDS with one local release, and then folded the label for a year. In 1953, he relaunched SUN,releasing sin- gles until he folded the label in 1968. BEAR FAMILY has led the way in documenting Sam Phillips' incredible achievement with career-defining box sets on Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and definitive single or double CDs on every significant SUN artist.

  • Royal Studios and the Creation of the Hi Sound
Royal Studios and the Creation of the Hi Sound Matt Hicks 2013 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies To say the city of Memphis has a legacy of music is an understatement. From the home of the blues and to the birthplace of rock n' roll, from Elvis to Al Green, Memphis has served as a conduit of musical ideas, shaping and influencing upcoming artists with the legacies of their forerunners. The concentration of music in this city led to the development of many recording studios. In turn, these studios shaped Memphis's musical output. It is difficult to imagine rock and roll without the recordings created at Sun Studio in the fifties. In the following decades, soul music was nurtured at Stax and then Royal studios, creating a worldwide phenomenon. In many ways, Memphis’s recording spaces – and the producers and engineers that worked them – facilitated the growth of Memphis music. This is especially the case with Royal Studios. Unfortunately, many of the most successful of Memphis's recording studios were forced to close by the late seventies. Sun Studios began its decline after Elvis Presley left the label and am Phillips lost interest. The label was sold to Shelby Singleton and Mercury Records in 1969, and the studio was sold to an auto parts company, then converted back into a recording studio in 1987 and reopened as a museum. Stax met a similar fate in 1975, after several years of distribution problems with Atlantic Records and later CBS Records. Bankrupt by December of 1975, the Stax label was sold to Fantasy Records.
