He is back!By Mats HanqvistJust like old days. Real stories to enjoy! The comic book version of the 20th Centuryrsquo;s most famous fictional magician sees print again in Hermes Pressrsquo; deluxe version of King Features comicsrsquo; Mandrake the Magician! Lee Falkrsquo;s newspaper strip, Mandrake the Magician, offered readers, magic, occult and the fantastic and King Featurersquo;s comic book version, which saw print during the height of the Silver Age, was a worthy entry into the world of comic books. This first volume of the complete comic book run of Mandrake the Magician presents the first five comics in the series together with all of the back-up stories printed in King Featuresrsquo; Flash Gordon title. These stories feature artwork by such Silver Age luminaries as Don Heck, Werner Roth, and Andre LeBlanc with scripts by Dick Wood. Volume One also contains tons of extras including extensive essays on Lee Falkrsquo;s Mandrake the Magician and the artists who created the comic book series. Also included (in addition to the comic book reprint of the story) is the complete original art to one of the back-up stories. • EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation. Dismemberment. Serial killers. Graphic gore. Hey, Kids! COMICS!! Since the release of The Dark Knight film series and the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic-book characters have become wildly popular in other forms of entertainment, particularly television. But broadcast TV’s representations of comic-book characters are no longer the bright, colorful, and optimistic figures of the past. Children are innately attracted to comic-book characters; but in today’s comic book-based programs, children are being exposed to graphic violence, profanity, dark and intense themes, and other inappropriate content. In this research report, the PTC examined comic book-themed prime-time programming on the maJor broadcast networks during November, February, and May “sweeps” periods from November 2012 through May 2019. Programs examined were Fox’s Gotham; CW’s Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends oF Tomorrow, and Riverdale; and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents oF S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Marvel’s Inhumans. Research data suggest that broadcast television programs based on these comic-book characters, created and intended for children, are increasingly inappropriate and/or unsafe for young viewers. In its research, the PTC found the following during the study period: • In comic book-themed programming with particular appeal to children, young viewers were exposed to over 6,000 incidents of violence, over 500 deaths, and almost 2,000 profanities. • The most violent program was CW’s Arrow. Young viewers witnessed 1,241 acts of violence, including 310 deaths, 280 instances of gun violence, and 26 scenes of people being tortured.

  • “Phans”, Not Fans”: the Phantom and Australian Comic-Book Fandom1
. Volume 9, Issue 2 November 2012 “Phans”, not Fans”: The Phantom and Australian comic-book fandom1 Kevin Patrick, Monash University, Australia2 Abstract The Phantom is an American comic-strip character who, at the time of his debut in 1936, became the forerunner of the costumed superhero, but whose popularity was eclipsed by the subsequent appearance of Superman in 1938. Although historically neglected in the United States, The Phantom comic strip enjoyed consistently greater popularity overseas – most notably in Australia, which today hosts the world’s oldest edition of The Phantom comic book. This paper will argue that the dissemination of The Phantom in Australia’s pre- war print media culture, particularly through women’s magazines, greatly influenced its public reception and cemented the character’s appeal amongst mainstream audiences. This paper further examines the role played by Australian fans of the Phantom – or “phans”, as they preferred to be called – in using print and online media to sustain public interest in the character, and thus entered into a symbiotic – and occasionally adversarial – relationship with The Phantom’s commercial gatekeepers. Keywords: The Phantom; superhero; comics fandom; Australia; “phans”; fan clubs. 1. Introduction The Phantom is an American comic-strip hero who, at the time of his debut in 1936, became the forerunner of the costumed superhero that today dominates America’s media- entertainment industries, from comic-books and licensed merchandise, to blockbuster movies and videogames. Yet even as the Phantom’s profile in the United States was eclipsed by the subsequent appearance of Superman in 1938, he soon found greater favour amongst international audiences – and nowhere has the Phantom enjoyed a more ardent following than in Australia.

  • Editor & Publisher International Year Books
Content Survey & Selective Index For Editor & Publisher International Year Books *1929-1949 Compiled by Gary M. Johnson Reference Librarian Newspaper & Current Periodical Room Serial & Government Publications Division Library of Congress 2013 This survey of the contents of the 1929-1949 Editor & Publisher International Year Books consists of two parts: a page-by-page selective transcription of the material in the Year Books and a selective index to the contents (topics, names, and titles) of the Year Books. The purpose of this document is to inform researchers about the contents of the E&P Year Books in order to help them determine if the Year Books will be useful in their work. Secondly, creating this document has helped me, a reference librarian in the Newspaper & Current Periodical Room at the Library of Congress, to learn about the Year Books so that I can provide better service to researchers. The transcript was created by examining the Year Books and recording the items on each page in page number order. Advertisements for individual newspapers and specific companies involved in the mechanical aspects of newspaper operations were not recorded in the transcript of contents or added to the index. The index (beginning on page 33) attempts to provide access to E&P Year Books by topics, names, and titles of columns, comic strips, etc., which appeared on the pages of the Year Books or were mentioned in syndicate and feature service ads. The headings are followed by references to the years and page numbers on which the heading appears. The individual Year Books have detailed indexes to their contents.
