By Aubrey Nash The Shoo-Fly 4-H Club is off to a great start for the 2006 year and offi cers were recently elected. Megan Harper is the club’s president, Josh Ryska, vice president, Gabby Nash, secretary, Katie Price, treasurer, Tyler Theile sergeant at arms and Aubrey Nash as reporter. Club livestock projects this year will be swine led by Brad Dines and Heidi Nash, sheep led by Leslie Nash and dairy led by Melanie Harper. The Cloverbuds are being led by Margaret Lejardi and Lori Emry will lead the miscellaneous projects. On Jan. 6, the group met at Barney and Melanie Harper’s home for a community service project sponsored by the Idaho Fish and Game. The members built 12 wood duck nesting boxes. The Harpers, along with other parents were on hand to help with the cutting and assembly. “This was a really fun project and we hope our boxes will make a difference for wood ducks in our area,” members said. The project is not the first community service project for the club as they held a food and warm cloths drive over the Christmas holiday. Members also worked to pack community Christmas food boxes and helped wrap Wish Tree Christmas gifts. The group met again on Feb. 12 and Lori Emry gave a special presentation to the club on what makes up a good demonstration or illustrated talk. Austin Emry stood up and gave an example of a poor illustration talk. He received many laughs while doing it. Following, Lori had the group score him using the same system that judges use when presentations are given at the county level. The next meeting will be one of two demonstration days and it will be held on March 12 at 3 p.m. Members will present their demonstration-illustrated talks followed by a short business meeting and pizza afterward. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking people with an interest and background in natural resources to fi ll 21 vacancies on four Resource Advisory Councils (RACs) in Idaho. The RACs represent a cross- section of the public and provide advice and recommendations to BLM on issues concerning the management of the 11.8 million acres of public land in Idaho. “I encourage Idaho citizens to become actively involved in the management of public lands by submitting an application to BLM for membership on their local RAC,” said Acting Idaho State Director Kurt Kotter. “The RACs give stakeholders a seat at the table and an opportunity to make a contribution to the future of lands managed by the BLM.” Each council has 15 members who are appointed to three-year terms, and represent one of three general interest categories: Category 1 seeks members who are holders of federal grazing permits, representatives of energy and mineral development, timber industry, transportation or rights- of-way, off-highway vehicle use or commercial recreation. Category 2 is composed of representatives of nationally or regionally recognized environmental organizations, archaeological or historic interests, dispersed recreation users or wild horse and burro organizations. Category 3 consists of state, county or local elected offi cials, employees of a state agency responsible for the management of natural resources, members of an American Indian Tribe, academicians involved in natural sciences, or representatives of the public-at-large.
