It is very expensive and I really don’t think at this point that it is a necessity. by Colin Muldoon There are no hard numbers yet, but the early indicators point to a decline in the deer harvest this year compared to the 2001 season. “We don’t have report card numbers (for the 2002 general hunt) yet,” said John Rachael, regional wildlife manager for Idaho’s Department of Fish and Game from his Nampa office last Thursday. Although hunters are required to send report cards to the Fish and Game within 10 days, Rachael said those with general season permits can use them elsewhere in the state during other scheduled general hunts. “People that have a general season tag could hunt the Owyhees during the two-week, two-point season,” he said. “But they could also use (their permits) up in the panhandle in December Loggin’ the miles during the general season for whitetails. The kids are rewarded based on how many miles they “We don’t even pull the data this early to take a look at it.” rack up during the year. What numbers the agency has at the present time, are those gathered from the two Owyhee County check stations during the first weekend of the two-point deer season which ran from Oct. 5-18. Rachael said that the Fish and Game checked 439 hunters at stations located in Marsing and Walter’s Ferry. The two-day harvest was 84 deer for the first Saturday and Sunday, a 19 percent success rate. That compares to a 22 percent success last year, but there are factors to consider. “This year (deer season) opened on a Saturday,” Rachael said. “Last year, it opened on a Friday. What we saw was a lot of people taking three days off. So we got a lot more hunters through the check stations last year on opening weekend than what we did this year.” The numbers, Rachael said, from the check stations are but a snapshot and are not indicative of the overall success – or lack thereof – of the season itself. “Ordinarily, people that hunt deer spend on average between four and five days hunting,” he said. “(It’s) a small sample of the number of hunters (and) only the ones that come out during the daylight hours on the weekend. There’s a bunch that we’re not getting.” According Rachael, on what day the season opens can be a significant determining factor when the numbers are tallied. If opening day, for instance, falls during the week, the number of hunters through the check stations are lower. In 2001, the Fish and Game received 1,712 report cards from hunters in units, 40, 41 and 42, which encompasses most of Owyhee County. Those hunters reported harvesting 652 deer. “That gives a success rate of 38 percent for the season. That’s pretty good for that kind of hunt,” Rachael said.” Quality ELECTRONICS • Specializing in TV and VCR repair “When special interests tried to weaken the public interest • All work guaranteed aspect of Idaho water law, I was at the table defending your • Large stock of parts on hand rights. Last week, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman approved the plea for assistance declaring 13 of the 20 counties disaster areas. Senators Larry Craig and Mike Crapo, and Representatives Mike Simpson and Butch Otter sent a letter earlier last month to Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman saying that the persistent adverse conditions have made such a designation necessary. A condition Veneman agreed with. “We write to support Governor Kempthorne’s Sept. 19, 2002 request that additional Idaho counties be declared as agriculture disaster areas,” the letter to Veneman reads. “Drought conditions are having an adverse affect on Idaho agriculture and these counties have already received state disaster declarations.

They should be at the 9th grade level.” Williams acknowledged the daunting task of bringing a student, who is technically in the 9th grade, but reads at a 2ndgrade level. ABC’s ace investigative reporter Sunday Morning Worship 10:30am Sunday Evening Worship 6pm Sunday: 9:00 am Sunday Evening Service 6:30pm Wed. Bible Study 7pm 1:00 pm (Spanish) Brian Ross, who had reported unfounded hearsay implicating Wed. Bible Study 7:00pm Weekday prayer 6pm-9pm Hatfill last June, returned to the story on ABC’s World News Tonight on Oct. 22, claiming that three bloodhounds had Friends Community Church of Jesus Christ of independently led the FBI directly to Hatfill’s apartment after Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Latter Day Saints sniffing scent extracted from anthrax letters posted last year. Homedale Homedale Homedale Accuracy in Media has been looking into this story since 337-4248 or 454-1528 708 West Idaho Ave 337-4112 301 W. Montana, 337-3464 Bishop Ned Stokes SE corner Idaho and West 7th Sunday School: 9:30 am Newsweek first reported it in August. We found that the FBI had Bishop Jerry Anderson Sunday Services: 9:45 to 10:20 am Sunday Morning Worship: 10:45 am the dogs flown here from California, even though there are at Pastor: John Beck Sunday 1st Ward 9am least 15 police dog teams in Maryland, including one that is on Sunday 2nd Ward 12:30pm Primary 11am call with the Bureau’s Hostage Rescue Team. He ignored the Wilder 2nd W. and Owyhee, 337-3151 Homedale 205 A St. E, 482-7839 Pastor Chuck Ryan controversy over the “new technology” used by the FBI to Sunday School 9:45am 212 S. 1st W., 337-3715 Pastor Ray Gerthung Sunday Morning Worship 10:30am collect the scent that supposedly led the dogs to Hatfill. Sunday School 10am & 11am Sunday School 9:45am Sunday Evening Worship 6pm Had Ross done any investigating, he would have learned, as Sunday Evening 7pm Sunday Service 11am Sunday Eve. 6:00pm Wednesday Night 7pm we did, that the FBI has invested in the Scent Transfer Unit-100, Wednesday Evening 7pm Adult Bible Study/Prayer, Youth Group & Pastor James Huls Wed. Eve. 7:00pm which “vacuums” scent from an article onto a “scent pad.” The 12 Step Bible-based Recovery Group STU-100 is popular in California, but the two national police bloodhound associations claim that it is too susceptible to Owyhee Baptist Church Marsing Church of Christ contamination to be admissible as evidence in court and have Catholic Church Homedale Marsing 337-3147 refused to endorse its use. They fear that the Bureau’s reliance Marsing 932 Franklin, Marsing on the STU-100 could discredit the use of bloodhounds in all 1 Railroad Ave., Homedale 459-3653 Sunday school 10am 896-5604 criminal cases. Good Shepherd Saturday 7:00pm Sunday services 11am and 6:30pm Sunday Bible Study 10am & 1pm Good Shepherd Sunday 12 noon (Spanish) Wednesday services 7pm Sunday Worship 11am They cite a 1996 case in California in which a jury found a Wednesday Bible Study 6pm defendant guilty on the basis of the prosecution’s claim that the scent pad from an STU-100 had enable a dog to track down the defendant. Police bloodhound handlers from the two national Bible Missionary associations were incensed by “irregularities” in the dog’s use. Christian Church Church Assembly of God Church A dog expert flew to California to testify for the defense, and one Homedale Homedale Marsing 110 W. On the basis of this testimony, the judge threw Church school 9:45 Worship 11am Sunday Worship 11am & 6 pm out the jury’s conviction, and this was upheld on appeal. Sunday Evening 7pm Police dog handlers in Maryland are critical of the FBI’s efforts to link Hatfill to the anthrax letters using the STU-100. Lizard ButteBaptist Church Hatfill says that the special agents had him sit in an empty Nazarene Church Trinity Holiness Church Marsing Homedale apartment in the same building where his apartment was located, Marsing Pastor Dave London 119 N. That led the Sunday worship 11am-12pm 896-4184 337-5021 Sunday school 9:45am-10:55am Behind Mr. B's Market Sunday School 10am handler to cry, “The dog is reacting!” Our police sources say that Worship Services - Sunday 11am and 6pm Sunday evening 6-7pm Sunday Morning Worship 11am Sunday School - 9:45am the FBI should have used a “line-up,” requiring the dog to single Wednesday evening 7pm-8pm Sunday Evening 7pm Mid Week TLC Groups out the one matching the scent. They point out that if Hatfill was Every 3rd Sat. family video at 6 pm Thursday Evening 7:30pm the only suspect in the room, a good defense lawyer would argue that the handlers were “directing” the dog to Hatfill, as they did Church of Jesus Christ of Vision Bible Church in the California case where the jury verdict was overturned.
