www.moragachamber.org 9 Moraga Chamber of Commerce Directory and Guide 2012 Edition Saint Mary’s College – Part of our Community Saint Mary's College of California is one of the oldest colleges in the west, celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2013. Originally located in San Francisco, Saint Mary’s was established in 1863 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese as a college for young men, operating for several years under Archdiocesan direction until 1868, when the De La Salle Christian Brothers assumed leadership of the school. The Christian Brothers are the world’s largest Roman Catholic order dedicated to teaching, founded 320 years ago by St. John Baptist de la Salle, who devoted his life to the ministry of Christian education, especially for the poor. Saint Mary’s moved east to Oakland in 1889 and then to its current home in Moraga in 1928. Still in use are 11 of the original structures on the Moraga campus — built in 1928 and 1929 in Mission Renaissance style with stunning white walls and red tile roofs. They surround the true heart of the campus, the College Chapel, which offers a place of reflection and peace for all, and is home to a remarkable collection of art, some of it hundreds of years old. Located in the lush Moraga Valley, Saint Mary’s is surrounded by the natural beauty and abundant wildlife of the Moraga hills. On one of the hillsides are the concrete letters SMC, which every freshman class since 1970 has painted at the beginning of their first semester. On another hill stands "La Cruz de la Victoria," the Cross of Victory, erected in 1936. This familiar landmark is a popular destination for campus hikers. High on another hill stands the Geissberger Observatory, equipped with a robotic telescope and a deck designed for stargazers. Much has changed since the College’s earliest days — with location, size and demographics dramatically transformed. The College’s first students in 1863 were mainly boys and young men from the lumber mills, cattle ranches, silver mines and gold diggings of the American West. Many of Saint Mary’s early students were Irish, hence the nickname first coined by a sports writer — The Gaels. And some of those first students came from as far away as Guatemala. When the Christian Brothers arrived in 1868 there were only 34 students. Today, Saint Mary’s has more than 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, with women, first admitted in 1970, making up more than 50 percent of the student body. The College offers 40 majors and the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Leadership, Master of Education, Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Master of Business Administration, Executive Master of Business Administration, and Doctorate in Educational Leadership. There are 196 faculty; the student-faculty ratio is 14:1 and the average class size is 21 students. Saint Mary’s is a comprehensive college — offering undergraduate and graduate programs that integrate liberal and professional education — and is built upon a foundation of Catholic, Lasallian and liberal arts traditions. The core Lasallian principles of social justice, faith in the presence of God, respect for all persons, inclusive community and quality education are reflected in every aspect of campus life and learning. Rooted in the Christian Brothers’ commitment to teaching and learning, Saint Mary’s student-centered education shapes individual lives that can transform society. The Catholic tradition fosters a Christian understanding of the whole person and defends the goodness, dignity and freedom of each individual in a community that values diversity of perspective, background and culture.

As Saint Mary’s celebrates its sesquicentennial, it is important to note that, while much has changed over its 150 years, there remain rich traces of the past. Among them — the enduring commitment to service, learning and community and, of course, the ringing of the Chapel bells that every Saint Mary’s student has heard and remembers. In celebrating this anniversary, the College honors the memories, experiences and commitments that actively connect generations of Saint Mary’s Gaels.

www.moragachamber.org 13 Moraga Chamber of Commerce Directory and Guide 2012 Edition Moraga History

Although most of the homes, roads, and businesses in present day Moraga were built since 1960, the Moraga area has a rich and varied history. Once the stomping grounds of mastodons and three-toed horses, Moraga has nurtured villages of early Saklan Indians, hosted a booming lumber industry, had a railroad running through it, and boasted prime acreage for pears, walnuts, and vineyards. In 1835 the Mexican government granted Joaquin Moraga and his cousin, Juan Bernal, 13,316 acres of land in lieu of a military pension. Originally known as Rancho Laguna de los Palos Colorados (Ranch of the Lake of the Redwoods), the rancho included parts of Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette and the communities of Canyon and Redwood. By 1912 the bulk of the rancho was owned by James Irvine who started the Moraga Land Company. It was during this period that the Moraga Company headquarters was established next to what today is the Moraga Shopping Center. In 1927 the Moraga Company offered 100 acres free to Saint Mary's College. The college purchased an additional 300 acres and beginning building the campus in 1928. Subdivisions and homes were started in the area after 1935 when most of Moraga Historical Society the land was bought by the Utah Construction Company. In the early 1960s, 1500 St. Mary's Rd. Russell Bruzzone began building and subdividing in the old rancho. 14 www.moragachamber.org Moraga Chamber of Commerce Directory and Guide 2012 Edition The Barn One of the town’s oldest surviving structures, the Barn was originally a 2-story hotel built in 1913-1914 by the Moraga Company. The Moraga Mercantile, as it was later called, also served as a place where one could buy hay and groceries, collect mail, and housed the first dial telephone switchboard station in the state. A bar was added in the 1930s but a State law prohibiting the use of the term “bar” forced the owners to add the infamous “n.” The Barn stayed in operation as a bar until it closed in the mid ‘80s and the building started to decay. Canyon Construction purchased the building in 1995 with the objective of conserving the original look of the property while creating a state of the art, sustainable building. Now boasting LEED certification, the Barn sports a roof made of solar tiles that incorporate photovoltaic circuits. Cement tanks are buried in the courtyard and collect rain water to irrigate the property and all lights are LED or fluorescent and programmed to turn on and off depending on movement and darkness. Currently the Barn serves as beautifully designed office space for his company, but Canyon Construction owner Chris Avant is exploring the idea of reinventing the Barn as a wine bar and event hub.

Why is it important for all of us here in Moraga to “shop Moraga first?” Well, besides saving time, money, and effort, retail dollars spent here support our business friends and neighbors. More importantly, shopping in Moraga generates the sales tax that contributes to funding for road and sewer maintenance, and for services such as police, recreation, and the Town’s administration. The Shop Moraga First section of the Moraga Chamber of Commerce’s website is a great tool to learn about all the local businesses and services in your neighborhood.

Surprisingly, the Commons Park is relatively new. The Town of Moraga purchased the park’s 40 acres from Caltrans in 1978 after plans for the area to become a freeway interchange for routes 77 and 93 were abandoned; the park was officially dedicated in July, 1982 by Mayor Margaret DePriester. On any given day the park is filled with children, grandparents, teens, walkers, bikers, picnickers, disc golfers, day campers, and concert goers. Throughout the year the community gathers on the extensive grounds for specific events and celebrations.

Bringing your Dog Dogs are allowed on many of the paved trails when they are on leash and in control. Signs are normally posted at the trail head. If you are looking for an area to allow your dog to romp a bit, there are two choices: Mulholland Open Space Preserve, where animals that are under a person's control are permitted on the paved portion of Donald Drive without a leash. Rancho Laguna Park, where animals that are under a person's control are permitted without a leash during the following times: (i) April 1 to September 30, daily from park opening to 9:00 a.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to park closing; (ii) October 1 to March 31, daily from park opening to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to park closing. Dogs are not allowed without leash in the parking lot area or when certain events are going on. Cycling Hundreds of cyclists ride through the Lamorinda area on any given weekend. Several wide streets with bike lanes make this a relatively safe place to get out and enjoy the beauty of our hills and valleys. A great way to get to know our community is to pedal the15-mile Lamor- inda Loop. You can pick up the loop almost anywhere; from the corner of Moraga Way and Moraga Road, head out Moraga Way towards Orinda. At the Crossroads, veer right toward Theater Square and turn right onto Davis Road. To the left of the first stop sign is the hard-to-spot entrance to the path that will take you to Lafayette. The path ends at St. Stephens; ride down the hill and follow Happy Valley Road to Mt.iablo D Blvd. A right turn on Mt. Diablo will eventually bring you to Moraga Road; turn right on Moraga Road and then left at School Street. Lamorinda Loop Bike Route Just past Stanley Middle School is an en- trance to the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail. Follow the trail all the way back up to The Lamorinda Trail Loop is 17.5 miles long.
