Ble Annual Review 2019 Scotland GET SCOTLAND UNCOMUNCOM FORTAFORTA ANNUAL REVIEW 2019 BLEBLE – Another Uncomfortable Year DISCOM FIND FORT YOUR DISCOM FIND FORT YOUR ZONE 2019 will surely be remembered as being at best uncomfortable – with major debates on a wide range CHAIR of political, constitutional and economic issues – many of which remain unresolved as we start a new year. The marketing profession has had its own challenges as we continue to demonstrate our role and prove our value not only in business and in the MAN’S boardroom but in society in general. It was with this background that The Marketing Society introduced an evolved purpose and fresh new identity. We believe our role is to Empower Brave Leaders. And never has it been more important to be both empowered and brave as MES marketing leaders. In Scotland we also developed an exciting new vision – to build a vibrant marketing community renowned for enlightened thinking, innovation and creativity. SAGE We continue to develop a comprehensive events schedule largely designed to empower and improve us as marketing professionals with our flagship programme providing a platform to inspire, recognise and celebrate success. And it has indeed been another very successful year for the Society in Scotland with strong performances across all our measurements and most importantly membership numbers and satisfaction. My thanks go to the MSS Council, Lux Events and the Marketing Society team both in London and Scotland. It has also been a real privilege to have worked with the other Chairs in the regional hubs the Society has built across the globe. I wish our incoming Chair, Fiona Burton and Vice Chair, Rod Gillies continued success and hope they ensure our members and all marketing professionals in Scotland never become too comfortable. Mick Doran, Sainsbury’s Bank At the beginning of the year we set out our 3 key objectives; To attract, engage and add value to our members To promote the value of marketing – from the classroom to the boardroom To promote Scotland – as a great place to study, work and invest in marketing. I am pleased to report we have made significant progress in all of these areas as you will read throughout this Annual Review. Our members remain our number one priority and I am delighted we are now sitting at over 725 members – an increase of over 100 since last year – and we now have 73 leading organisations involved as corporate members. My thanks go out to Mick who has been an excellent and very supportive Chair and also to the rest of the MSS Council and Lux Events who have helped us develop another very successful programme across the year. Our incoming Chair, Fiona Burton from The Leith Agency, has big DIREC shoes to fill. Student Marketing Societies This initiative is now active in six universities – Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian, Dundee, Edinburgh Napier, Queen Margaret, Stirling and interest has been established in six other universities across the country. Each Student Marketing Society receives up to five free memberships sponsored by Edrington and is also supported by a mentor from the MSS Council who help develop their programmes and secure speakers. Marketing Society Star Marketing Student Award Nine universities nominated a total of 16 students for the Marketing Society Star Marketing Student Award. The students attended an Apprentice Day event at Edrington-Beam Suntory UK where they took part in a number of group tasks as well as individual interviews to win a three month paid placement at EBSUK as well as the accolade of Star Marketing Student of the Year. Star Creative Student of the Year Award 63 students from art colleges and FE institutions across Scotland participated in the Marketing Society Star Creative Student award.     British canvas, stretcher and panel suppliers’ marks: Part 11, Winsor & Newton panels This guide surveys suppliers’ marks on the reverse of picture supports. This part is one of two devoted to the business founded by William Winsor and Henry Charles Newton in 1832, trading as Winsor & Newton and then from 1882 as Winsor & Newton Ltd. It is one of very few artists’ supply businesses with origins in the early 19th century still trading today, albeit no longer in family hands. The business has been a significant supplier of canvases and panels. For canvas marks, see Part 10. For further information, see British artists' suppliers, 1650-1950 - W on this website. He originally studied medicine and with his love of preci- sion and attention to detail had hopes of becoming a surgeon. However, it was during his university years that he decided to switch direction and dedicate his life to a career in painting, much Orientalists and the I to the delight of art lovers across the world, including members of the royal households of Spain and Jordan, who boast original Jose Gonzalez Bueno works in their collections. !e artist’s intricate watercolours testify to his love of precision and the minutae of design, with every brush stroke making up an Alhambra in'nitesimally small part of the greater, richer whole. It is a scant three metres wide in some parts, with rocks leaning in so they almost meet. The walls push more than 180m towards the sky and the only light comes from tea candles flickering in brown paper bags along the cavern floor. Al Siq, or the Shaft, is the geological corridor that funnels visitors 1.2km from the 21st- century bustle of Wadi Musa in southern Jordan to the ancient rose-red city of Petra, carved into the cliffs beyond. This ghosted city disappeared from maps for 500 years until Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812. To follow him along the Siq is to experience the edge of that stunning recovery. This is a place with currency in many imaginations. In her memoir, Married To A Bedouin, New Zealander Marguerite van Geldermalsen wrote about living in Petra’s caves. The site was in the explosive climax to Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade and, more than 150 years earlier, in the lithographs of Scottish artist David Roberts. “I am more and more astonished and bewildered with this extraordinary city,” Roberts wrote in 1839, “and I have often thrown my pencil away in despair of ever being able to convey any idea of [it].” It’s easy to empathise with Roberts.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. “ARRANGED IN A FANCIFUL MANNER AND IN AN ANCIENT STYLE”: THE FIRST SCENIC REALIZATIONS OF SCOTT’S WORK AND THE DESIRE FOR A NEW REALISM ON SCOTTISH STAGES Barbara Bell The impact of early nineteenth-century dramatisations of works by Walter Scott on the existing visual theatrical framework was to begin the process of changing the relationship between a play-text and the stage scenery that framed the action to more directly embody the world of that specific text. This led to the rise of scenic realism on the nineteenth-century stage and in Scotland, at least, it strengthened the relationship between the theatre and the population as a whole, through the emergence of a repertoire that connected more immediately with its audience.

Dichas vis- tas, de indudable calidad y anteriores a la aparición de la fotografía, aportan datos gráficos de enorme interés para conocer mejor nuestro patrimonio pai- sajístico y arquitectónico, en parte des- aparecido o transformado. Gracias a los dibujos, acuarelas y óleos de Roberts, publicados con gran éxito como litografías y grabados, el público culto de Europa accedió du- rante el siglo XIX a vistas de lugares apenas conocidos en dichos momen- tos previos a la fotografía. De este mo- do se conformaría una imagen de nues- tros territorios que ha marcado su personalidad hasta tiempos actuales. Además nuestro artista ejerció una no- table influencia sobre destacados pin- tores, especialmente sobre Jenaro Pé- rez Villamil, primer gran paisajista español de su tiempo. En un reciente libro de Antonio Gi- ménez Cruz 1 se reconstruye el viaje de Roberts por España, sin estudiar sus vis- tas, usando textos de autores coetáneos y cerca de 60 cartas del pintor conser- vadas, muchas publicadas en 1866 por su primer biógrafo, James Ballantine 2.
