Twins history began in 1961 when Washington Senators president Calvin Griffith made the historic decision to move his family’s team to the Midwest, settling on the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in Minnesota. The new team was named after the state’s famous Twin Cities and began their inaugual season with a talented roster featuring Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison, Camilo Pascual, and Jim Lemon. Homegrown talents Jim Kaat, Zoilo Versalles, Jimmie Hall, and Tony Oliva combined with the Twins already potent nucleus to make the team a force to be reckoned with in the 1960s.

Not only was Dedeaux the main architect for the success of the USC baseball program, but also one of the great ambassadors for college baseball and amateur baseball in international competition. In his 45-year tenure at USC (1942-86), Dedeaux led the Trojans to 11 national championships and 28 conference titles. He posted an overall record of 1,332-571-11 for a superb .699 winning percentage. At his retirement, he had won more games than any other college baseball coach (he currently ranks seventh among Division I coaches). His teams from 1970-74 won fi ve straight NCAA championships, a record that may never be broken. No other school has won more than two in a row. Two personal honors for Dedeaux, which are quite fi tting considering his accomplishments, came in 1999 when he was named “Coach of the Century” by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. As part of the 50th anniversary of the College World Series in 1996, Dedeaux was named the head coach of the All-Time CWS team by a panel of former World Series coaches, media and college baseball offi cials. In 1999, he was presented with keys to the city of Omaha (home to the College World Series). Dedeaux was named Coach of the Year six times by the American Baseball Coaches Association and was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame in 1970.

FRONT OFFICE The A’s added Jason Giambi (left) and Matt Holliday (right) to bolster their offense for the 2009 season. COOPERSTOWN AWAITS ‘BASEBALL’S GREATEST LEADOFF HITTER’ FRONT OFFICE HENDERSON TO BECOME 15TH ATHLETIC INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME JULY 26 The greatest leadoff hitter in baseball history has a date with Cooperstown this year. On Sunday, July 26, Rickey Henderson—the pride of Oakland, Calif. and his hometown team, the Oakland Athletics—will stride to the podium in upstate New York and join the game’s immortals. And while fans and media are sure to join in the discussion, there should be no debate: Rickey was, indeed, the greatest leadoff man the sport has ever known. Better than Cobb. Better than Rose. Better than Brock. Better 2009 ATHLETICS than Wills. Henderson, who was born in the shadow of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and graduated from Oakland Tech High School, played 25 Major League seasons, including four stints with the A’s that spanned 14 years (1979-84, 1989-93, 1994-95, 1998). And during that quarter century of baseball, the mercurial outfielder posted unprecedented offensive numbers. He set Major League career records for runs scored (2,295), stolen bases (1,406) and walks (2,190, later eclipsed by Barry Bonds), and banged out 3,055 hits, 297 home runs and 1,115 RBI, with a .401 on-base percentage. He REVIEW also hit 81 home runs leading off a game, still a Major League mark. Some of his most shining moments came in an Oakland uniform. In 1982, he shattered the single-season record by stealing 130 bases.
