Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae: a Brief Musical History Hot Days — Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae: A Brief Musical History During a sweltering rehearsal the other night, we decided we were only going to run through some reggae and rocksteady tunes. It was too hot to move, too humid to breathe. We most certainly didn’t want to run through any raucous ska numbers. This reminded me, however, of the story of how ska fell out of fashion in Jamaica during the mid to late ’60s. But let’s start at the beginning. Late ’50s Jamaica saw a mix of musical styles played on the island. Tourists wanted to hear Calypso or its Jamaican equivalent, Mento, while the Jamaicans wanted to hear the sounds they were catching over the radio waves from Florida and the States — soul, jazz and R&B. Hotels and resorts showcased Calypso and Mento, while R&B, jazz and soul were a feature of the many sound systems around Jamaica. A sound system was a generator, a turntable and some speakers loaded in a truck and set up for a street party. The owners and operators of the sound systems would charge admission and sell food and alcohol. Operating in the ghettos, the competition between sound systems was fierce and often violent. By day, most professional musicians worked the hotels and restaurants, but they also had a very productive career recording for the various music studios that were popping up. Local sound system operators such as Coxone Dodd and Duke Reid had taken the competition of owning and playing the latest exclusive music at their dances to a new level, and that was recording music. At first it was jazz, R&B, swing and boogie compositions. But as the race for a one-up on rival sound systems escalated, they began to add to the mix. The pace was frenetic. Musicians would record a song, and by the end of the day it was pressed and being played at its respective sound system. Audience reaction to the tune was judged and in the days that followed, clones of the tune from its originator or from the competition could be heard. Soon as you know it, the sounds of Mento, boogie, blues, R&B, jazz and Latin rhythms had been blended and distilled into the new hit sound: ska! Ska and its attendant dance style were kings of the ring for most of the ’60s, specifically ’64 and ’65. But in the summer of ’66 that all changed. And the prime catalyst for the change was this: It was HOT! Jamaica ska, while not as fast as Two Tone or Third Wave Ska, is still a very energetic and upbeat music. And when it’s scorching hot outside, the sound systems and dance halls found that people just didn’t, or couldn’t, dance to it. So the tempo slowed down. Way down. And this is what sparked my memory at rehearsal. Playing ska, much less dancing to it, is an intense aerobic workout. (In fact, I hear there are even places in NYC and LA that advertise ska workouts.) Not something your average person wants to do in a heat wave. So in the summer of ’66, as the heat went up, the tempo went down. Along the way, the music lost the big brass sections common to ska and added more vocalists, and thus Rocksteady was born. Rocksteady, also known as “Lover’s Rock” due to its slow dance tempo and often romantic lyrics, kept ska’s basic formula of the guitar hitting the “skank” on the offbeat while the drums kept the groove on the two and four count. The bass however, lost its bouncy walk and became much more melodic. And it was this style of rhythm that, in a year or so, would give rise to reggae in the same way as ska gave birth to rocksteady. And we can all see/hear where reggae went! Music is constantly evolving. All styles and genres feed on each other and innovation as well as on fads and trends. But I don’t think you’ll find another instance where the weather and the audience had such a hand in determining the direction in which a musical style grew. Rocksteady and reggae till the weather breaks … PS. You can get a taste of ska, rocksteady and a whole lot of reggae at this year’s Waterfront Reggae Fest taking place at India Point Park in Providence on Saturday, August 8. It features Steel Pulse, Yellowman, Third World, Mighty Mystic, High Hopes Band and local Motif winner of Best Reggae/Ska, The Copacetics. There will also be a smorgasbord of Jamaican food, so you can really get a taste! Aotearoa NZ is no exception to this trend wherein the direct action message that Bob Marley preached to ‘get up stand up’ supported the radical engagements in the public sphere prompted by Black Power.1 In many ways, Marley’s message and demeanour vindicated the radical oppositional strategies that activists had deployed against the Babylon system in contradistinction to the Te Aute Old Boy tradition of tactful engagement. No surprise, then, that roots reggae was sometimes met with consternation by elders, although much of the issue revolved specifically around the smoking of Marijuana, the wisdom weed.2 Yet some activists and gang members paid closer attention to the trans- mission, through the music, of a faith cultivated in the Caribbean, which professed Ethiopia as the root and Haile Selassie I as the agent of redemption. In a world of digital social media, the shared, multi-sensory, social and embodied experience of the sound system session becomes ever more important and valuable. Sound System Outernational #5 – “Sounds in the City: Street Technology and Public Space” (4-5-6 April, 2019 - Naples, Italy) is designed as a multi-layered event hosted at Università degli Studi di Napoli L’Orientale with local social movement partners. Over three days and interacting with the city of Naples in its rich academic, social, political and musical dimensions, the event includes talks, roundtables, exhibitions and film screenings. It also features sound system dances hosting local and international performers in some of the city’s most iconic social spaces. The aim of the program is to provide the chance for foreign researchers to experience the local sound system scene in the grassroots venues that constitute this culture’s infrastructure in Naples. This aims to stimulate a fruitful exchange between the academic community and local practitioners, which has always been SSO’s main purpose. In its last section, however, the book takes a surprising turn – Bradley argued that the history of reggae came to an end in the mid-80s, and left was without any notable offshoots. This is an astonishing thesis, especially coming from an author like him. What were the arguments behind it, and what kind of light do the fifteen+ years since the book’s pub- lication shed on its legitimacy? In the early 1970s, after ska and rocksteady 1, Jamaica found in reggae a style that was distinctive in both musical profile and content.     “Chase Sound Boys Out of Earth”: The Aura of Dubplate Specials in Finnish Reggae Sound System Culture Feature Article Kim Ramstedt Åbo Akademi University (Finland) Abstract This study seeks to expand our understanding of how dubplate specials are produced, circulated, and culturally valued in the international reggae sound system culture of the dub diaspora by analysing the production and performance of “Chase the Devil” (2005), a dubplate special commissioned by the Finnish MPV sound system from Jamaican reggae singer Max Romeo. A dubplate special is a unique recording where, typically, a reggae artist re-records the vocals to one of his or her popular songs with new lyrics that praise the sound system that commissioned the recording. Scholars have previously theorized dubplates using Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura, thereby drawing attention to the exclusivity and uniqueness of these traditionally analog recordings. However, since the advent of digital technologies in both recording and sound system performance, what Benjamin calls the “cult value” of producing and performing dubplates has become increasingly complex and multi-layered, as digital dubplates now remediate prior aesthetic forms of the analog. By turning to ethnographic accounts from the sound system’s DJ selectors, I investigate how digital dubplates are still culturally valued for their aura, even as the very concept of aura falls into question when applied to the recording and performance of digital dubplates.     Créolité and Réunionese Maloya: From ‘In-between’ to ‘Moorings’ Stephen Muecke, University of New South Wales An old Malbar is wandering in the countryside at night, and, seeing a light, approaches a cabin.1 It is open, so he goes in. He is invited to have a meal. No questions are asked; but he sings a ‘busted maloya’ [maloya kabosé] that speaks of his desire to open his wings and fly away, to accept the invitation to sleep in the cabin, to fall into the arms of the person narrating the ballad, and to weep. The whole company sings the ‘busted maloya.’2 Malbar is the name for Tamils descended from indentured labourers from parts of South India including the Malabar Coast and Pondicherry, where the French had another colony. Estimated to number 180,000, these diasporic Tamils had lost their language and taken up the local lingua franca, Creole, spoken among the Madagascans, French, Chinese and Africans making up the population of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Creole, as a language and set of cultural forms, is not typical of many locations in the Indian Ocean. While the central islands of Mauritius, the Seychelles, Rodriguez, Agalega, Chagos and Réunion have their distinct varieties of French Creole language, Creole is not a concept that has currency in East Africa, Madagascar or South Asia.     Julian Henriques Sonic Bodies: Reggae Sound Systems, Performance Techniques & Ways of Knowing Preamble: Thinking Through Sound It hits you, but you feel no pain, instead, pleasure.1 This is the visceral experience of audition, to be immersed in an auditory volume, swimming in a sea of sound, between cliffs of speakers towering almost to the sky, sound stacked up upon sound - tweeters on top of horns, on top of mid, on top of bass, on top of walk-in sub bass bins (Frontispiece). There is no escape, not even thinking about it, just being there alive to, in and as the excess of sound. Trouser legs flap to the base line and internal organs resonate to the finely tuned frequencies, as the vibrations of the music excite every cell in your body. This is what I call sonic dominance.2 This explodes with all the multi sensory intensity of image, touch, movement and smell - the dance crews formations sashaying across the tarmac in front of the camera lights, the video projection screens and the scent of beer rum, weed, sweat and drum chicken floating on the tropical air. The sound of the reggae dancehall session calls out across the city blocks, or countryside hills to draw you in. It brings you to yourself, to and through your senses and it brings you to and with others sharing these convivial joys - out on the street under the stars in downtown Kingston, Jamaica. Such a scene is literally the dance of the sonic bodies to which this book attends. Sonic bodies are fine-tuned, as with the phonographic instrument of the sound system “set” of equipment.
