The UFS will fund the building of the one astro hockey field whilst the building of the second will be a joint venture between the university and high schools in Bloemfontein. • Final Msc Research Report-Hmwalukomo 0710814H
School of Geography Archaeology and Environmental Studies The Role of Traditional Leaders in Environmental Governance in the Context of Decentralization: A Case Study of Grass Utilization in QwaQwa, Eastern Free State HERBERT MWALUKOMO 0710814H A research report submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Environmental Sciences October, 2008 DECLARATION I declare that this research report is my own, unaided work except where acknowledged. It is being submitted for the degree of Master of Science in the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It has not been submitted before for any degree or examination in any other University. _________________ Herbert Mwalukomo October, 2008 ii ABSTRACT This research investigated the role played by traditional leaders in environmental governance in the context of decentralization, based on a case study of grass utilization in QwaQwa. Specifically, the research focussed on weaving practices under traditional systems and in the current context. While environmental governance debates recognize the importance of the local scale through concepts such as Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) and Local Action 21, environmental roles of traditional leaders in relation to democratic institutions of local governance have not been adequately researched. Using institutional frameworks, effectiveness of traditional institutions of grass utilization in QwaQwa is analysed. Findings from the research show that the role of traditional leaders in grass utilization is shaped by historical, environmental and political factors that are specific to QwaQwa. In the past, grass was managed through various traditional practices with traditional leaders regulating access and enforcing traditional rules of utilization.

  • MULTILINGUAL HIV and Aids TERMINOLOGY
MULTILINGUAL HIV and Aids TERMINOLOGY Department of Arts and Culture: 2012 This document may be downloaded or printed for personal or educational use, on condition that this notice accompanies the text. Distribution for financial gain is not permitted. Copyright remains with the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) and no changes to the format or content of this document may be made without the permission of the copyright holder. Preface The HIV and Aids project was implemented by the National Terminology Services (NTS) of the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (DACST) in the early 90’s. The original list comprised about 400 term entries and was compiled by the then Biological and Agricultural Sciences internal project team. NTS terminologists supplied equivalents in their target languages in consultation with subject field experts, and used other available sources of information. In some languages it proved to be very difficult to document appropriate terminology. This was due to the lack of sufficient resources, and the fact that this was still a relatively new and specialised field. The purpose or aim of the HIV and Aids project is to promote communication between the general public and doctors, nurses, clinics and health professionals. This includes informing and educating the public of South Africa about this pandemic, its symptoms and HIV-associated diseases and related infections in a typical South African context. A consultative workshop was organised during the 1999/2000 financial year to try and finalise the provision of term equivalents in all the other 10 official languages. Challenges were identified during the workshop, and due to time and budgetary constraints the list was never finalised and disseminated to the public.
