HOVERFLY NUMBER 36 NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2003 ISSN 1358-5029 This edition is being produced in the wake of the second international symposium which was held in Alicante in June. Alan Stubbs has commented below that Spain was, as expected, too dry in mid-June for many hoverflies to be found. It seems to me that the same comment is true for Britain for much of the present season; although I have had a few productive days this year, on the majority of occasions when I have been in the field hoverfly numbers have proved to be sparse as a result of the hot and very dry conditions. The growth of interest on the subject however continues unabated, as anyone who subscribes to the UK hoverfly email exchange group will testify. Alena Bučánková 2 Biologie, vývoj a zoogeografie vybraných saproxylických skupin orientálních druhů čeledi Stratiomyidae Abstrakt Je popsána morfologie, biologie a zoogeografie larev čtyř druhů z čeledi Stratiomyidae. Dva z nich, Pegadomyia pruinosa a Craspedometopon sp. n., patří do podčeledi Pachygasterinae, další dva, Adoxomyia bistriata a Cyphomyia bicarinata , patří do podčeledi Clitellariinae. Larvy byly sbírány Dr. D. Kovacem pod kůrou padlých stromů v Malysii a Thajsku. Saproxylický způsob života larev v rámci celé čeledi je zde diskutován jako původní stav. Byly vytypovány morfologické a biologické znaky larev s možným fylogenetickým významem a jejich platnost byla vyzkoušena v kladistických programech Nona a Winclada. Zjištěný fylogenetický vztah hlavních podčeledí odpovídá v podstatě současnému systému čeledi. Překážkou detailnímu vyhodnocení jsou zatím jen nedostatečné popisy larev a jejich malá znalost, zvláště v tropických oblastech. Biology, development and zoogeography of some saproxylic Oriental species of Stratiomyidae (Diptera) Abstract The morphology, biology and zoogeography of four larvae of Stratiomyidae are described. Two of them, Pegadomyia pruinosa , Craspedometopon sp. n. belong to the subfamily Pachygasteinae, the others, Adoxomyia bistriata and Cyphomyia bicarinata are placed to the subfamily Clitellariinae. The larvae were collected under the bark of fallen trees in Malaysia and Thailand by Dr. D. Kovac. The saproxylic habitat of stratiomyid larvae is discussed in this thesis as an original state. The morphological and biological characters of possible phylogenetic significance are evaluated and their value was verified with use of Nona and Winclada programs. -

Dipterists Forum Hoverfly Newsletter Number 67 Spring 2020 ISSN 1358-5029 . On 21 January 2020 I shall be attending a lecture at the University of Gloucester by Adam Hart entitled “The Insect Apocalypse” the subject of which will of course be one that matters to all of us. Spreading awareness of the jeopardy that insects are now facing can only be a good thing, as is the excellent number of articles that, despite this situation, readers have submitted for inclusion in this newsletter. The editorial of Hoverfly Newsletter No. 66 covered two subjects that are followed up in the current issue. One of these was the diminishing UK participation in the international Syrphidae symposia in recent years, but I am pleased to say that Jon Heal, who attended the most recent one, has addressed this matter below. Also the publication of two new illustrated hoverfly guides, from the Netherlands and Canada, were announced. Both are reviewed by Roger Morris in this newsletter. The Dutch book has already proved its value in my local area, by providing the confirmation that we now have Xanthogramma stackelbergi in Gloucestershire (taken at Pope’s Hill in June by John Phillips). Cork, Republic of Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 21 Belvoirview Park, Belfast BT8 7BL, Northern Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> Abstract Since the 1997 Irish Coleoptera – a revised and annotated list, 59 species of Staphylinidae have been added to the Irish list, 11 species confirmed, a number have been deleted or require to be deleted, and the status of some species and names require correction. Notes are provided on the deletion, correction or status of 63 species, and a revised check-list of 710 species is provided with a generic index. Species listed, or not listed, as Irish in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (2nd edition), in comparison with this list, are discussed. The Irish status of Gabrius sexualis Smetana, 1954 is questioned, although it is retained on the list awaiting further investgation. Key words: Staphylinidae, check-list, Irish Coleoptera, Gabrius sexualis. Introduction The Staphylinidae (rove-beetles) comprise the largest family of beetles in Ireland (with 621 species originally recorded by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor (1997)) and in the world (with 55,440 species cited by Grebennikov and Newton (2009)). Since the publication in 1997 of Irish Coleoptera - a revised and annotated list by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor, there have been a large number of additions (59 species), confirmation of the presence of several species based on doubtful old records, a number of deletions and corrections, and significant nomenclatural and taxonomic changes to the list of Irish Staphylinidae. -

Jejich housenky mají silně vyvinutou snovací slunečnice, zavíječ Homoeosoma nimbella (Duponchel, 1837) schopnost a potravu opřádají jemným předivem. Podle této květy hvězdnicovitých, z. sójový (Etiella zinckenella Treitschke, schopnosti dostaly obě skupiny motýlů svoje jméno. Housenky 1832) mladá semena bobovitých. Větší počet druhů škodí na zavíječů a obalečů jsou si velmi podobné, liší se počtem chloup- ovocných a okrasných dřevinách. Spřádáním listů ovocných ků na bočních bradavkách předohrudi, zavíječi mají obvykle dřevin škodí zavíječ Eccopisa effractella Zeller, 1848. Zavíječ dva, housenky obalečů tři. švestkový (Acrobasis obtusella Hübner, 1796) stáčí a spřádá listy růžovitých i jiných dřevin, A. advenella (Zincken, 1818) žije mezi sepředenými listy, květy a pupeny růžovitých. Zavíječ angreštový Zavíječi – Pyraloidea (Zophodia grossulariella Hübner, 1809) se vyvíjí mezi sepře- denými listy, květy a plody angreštu a rybízu. Z. zimostrázový Taxonomické zařazení a škodlivé druhy (Cydalima perspectalis Walker, 1859), zavlečený z východní Asie, může způsobit holožír zimostrázů (Buxus spp.). Zavíječ Phycita Zavíječi (Pyraloidea) jsou druhově velmi početná nadčeleď, roborella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), z. dubový (Acrobasis dělí se na zavíječovité (Pyralidae) se 107 druhy a travaříkovité repandana F., 1796) a A. consociella (Hübner, 1813) škodí (Crambidae) se 155 druhy (1). Většinou jsou fytofágní, někdy spřádáním listů a výhonků dubů. V šiškách jehličnanů škodí detritofágní nebo saproxylofágní, housenky několika druhů se z. -

The Diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire: Craneflies and Winter Gnats by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] Version 1.1 26 November 2017 1 Summary This document provides a new checklist for the craneflies and winter gnats (Tipuloidea, Ptychopteridae and Trichoceridae) to extend the lists of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire first published by Kidd and Bindle in 1959. Overall statistics on recording activity are given by decade and hectad. Checklists are presented for each of the three Watsonian vice-counties 58, 59, and 60 detailing for each species the number of records, year of earliest and most recent record, and the number of hectads with records. A combined checklist showing distribution by the three vice-counties is also included, covering a total of 264 species, amounting to 75% of the current British checklist. Introduction This report is the third in a series to update and extend the partial checklist of the diptera of Lancashire and Cheshire published in 1959 by Leonard Kidd and Alan Brindle1. There were two previous updates, in 19642 and 19713. The previous reports in this series cover the soldierflies and allies4 and the Sepsidae5, the latter family not having been covered in Ref 1. The reader is referred to the first two reports for the background and rationale of these checklists, as well as the history of diptera recording and available data sources. The description of methodology is also kept to a minimum in the present report: only significant differences from the previous publications will be outlined. -
