5 Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas has been part of the international avant-garde since the nineteen-seventies and has been named the Pritzker Rem Koolhaas Architecture Prize for the year 2000. This book, which builds on six canonical projects, traces the discursive practice analyse behind the design methods used by Koolhaas and his office + OMA. It uncovers recurring key themes—such as wall, void, tur montage, trajectory, infrastructure, and shape—that have tek structured this design discourse over the span of Koolhaas’s Essays on the History of Ideas oeuvre. The book moves beyond the six core pieces, as well: It explores how these identified thematic design principles archi manifest in other works by Koolhaas as both practical re- Ingrid Böck applications and further elaborations. In addition to Koolhaas’s individual genius, these textual and material layers are accounted for shaping the very context of his work’s relevance. By comparing the design principles with relevant concepts from the architectural Zeitgeist in which OMA has operated, the study moves beyond its specific subject—Rem Koolhaas—and provides novel insight into the broader history of architectural ideas. Jahrhunderts vertraut war. Zu dieser Zeit als Student an der Fakultät für Architektur in Prishtina, besuchte Ich eine Vorlesung über die Moderne Architektur, in denen der Professor über Le Corbusiers Rolle in der Modemen Architektur sprach. Er erklärte, dass es das Gerücht gibt, Le Corbusier wäre mit Mazedonischer Architektur vertraut, und es gäbe eine von ihm entworfene Villa, die analog zu einem kleinen Zigeuner-Haus in Struga wäre. Einige Jahre später las Ich Grabrijans Buch Makedonska kUKa [Das Mazedonisches Haus] (1955), indem er von ebenjener Analogie eines Zigeuner- Hauses und Le Corbusiers Villa Carthago (1928) spricht. Von anderen Mazedonischen Autoren erfuhr Ich nicht nur von der Analogie von Le Corbusiers Arbeit und der Mazedonischen Architektur, sondern auch von deren Schlussfolgerungen, vie zum Beispiel, dass Le Corbusier Mazedonien besucht hat, um sich zu inspirieren. -

John Roberts, University of Newcastle Landscape and the Little Man: Aalto, the Institution and the Individual The architecture of Alvar Aalto had numerous formative interests, including an awareness of the forms and poetics of landscape, and a regard for the “little man,” the individual Finn living in a modernised industrialised welfare state. The role of the individual is the subject of an essay in the recent New Nordic catalogue where historian Lars Trägårdh identifies a Nordic “statist individualism,” in which “the central axis around which the Nordic social contract is formed is the alliance between state and individual.” Trägårdh’s findings recall Aalto’s commitment to his universal user: “a love for the little man,” and a perceived need for “a kind of guardian when our era’s mechanised life style threatens to strangle the individual and the organically harmonious life.” Aalto also proclaimed that “Nature is, of course, freedom’s symbol,” implying personal and political liberties associated with nature and landscape. -

One of its most significant qualities, he argued, is that its formal structure ‘is the outcome of a methodical development of flexibility’.1 Through an analysis of the Villa Mairea (1938-39) this paper will show that the formal structure of an Aalto project can be similarly characterised.2 For Aalto the quality of a work of architecture is measured by the extent to which it successfully accommodates the full scope of its human and ecological circumstances.3 The formal foundation for an inclusive architecture, he insisted, is flexibility or ‘flexible’ order, that is, the generation and coordination of many formal differences.4 Flexible formal structure, then, arises from the generation and coordination of many different formal relations. In Aalto’s architecture the many different structural (coordinated) relations are methodically developed (generated) through three major formal strategies: multiple co-spatial structures of the architectural whole, high levels of formal articulation, and the predominance of non-repetitive relations in dynamic equilibrium. Flexible formal structure underlies the inclusive character of the Villa Mairea, which was built for Maire and Harry Gullichsen and their children on the hillside of their family estate in Noormarkku (Fig.1). -
