Italian Wine Regions Dante Wine List ITALIAN WINE REGIONS DANTE WINE LIST: the wine list at dante is omaha's only all italian wine list. we are also the only restaurant to feature wines from each region of italy. each region has its own unique characteristics that make the wines & grapes distinctly unique and different from any other region of ita- ly. as you read through our selections, you will first have our table wines, followed by wines offered by the glass & bottle, then each region with the bottle sections after that. below is a little terminol- ogy to help you with your selections: Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita or D.O.C.G. - highest quality level of wine in italy. wines produced are of the highest standards with quantiy & quality control. 74 D.O.C.G.'s exist currently. Denominazione di Origine Controllata or D.O.C. - second highest standards in italian wine making. grapes & wines are made with standards of a high level, but not as high a level as the D.O.C.G. 333 D.O.C.'s exist currently. Denominazione di Origine Protetta or D.O.P.- European Union law allows Italian producers to continue to use these terms, but the EU officially considers both to be at the same level of Protected Designation of Origin or PDO—known in Italy as Denominazione di Origine Protetta or DOP. Therefore, the DOP list below contains all 407 D.O.C.'s and D.O.C.G.'s together Indicazione Geografica Tipica or I.G.T. - wines made with non tradition grapes & methods. quality level is still high, but gives wine makers more leeway on wines that they produce. l half priced bottles available thursday & all day sunday TABLE WINE WHITE WINE 2015 CASTELLARGO, PINOT GRIGIO 6/17/32 (GLASS/500 ML/1L) friuli-venezia giulia, grave, d.o.c. • CONTRADE Masseria Li Veli, Cellino San Marco
WINERY NAME: CONTRADE WINERY LOCATION: Masseria Li Veli, Cellino San Marco (Brindisi province), Puglia VINEYARD LOCATION: Brindisi province, Puglia VINEYARD LAND: FARMING PRACTICES: GRAPE VARIETIES: Primarily Negroamaro and Malvasia; small amount of Chardonnay WINE STYLES: Dry red, dry white WINE REGIONS: IGT Puglia TOTAL WINE PRODUCTION: 250,000 bottles (190,000 liters) YEAR FOUNDED: 2015 OWNER(S): The Falvo family WINEMAKER(S): Riccardo Cotarella Contrade is a product line of Masseria Li Veli started by the Falvo family in 2015, using high-quality Negroamaro, Malvasia, and Chardonnay grapes grown by a small group of local farmers. The wines are produced on-site, near their vineyards of origin, and then blended and bottled at Masseria Li Veli. The two wines in the Contrade line, a white and a red, provide quality wines of distinctive character and style with good market valuewines that can be served by themselves as a casual drink or with a wide range of foods. Contrade (pronounced kohn-TRA-day; singular contrada) is a southern Italian term for parcels of vineyard land that have been known by recognized names for a long time. Typically, these parcels were divided from one another by rows of trees, stone walls, creeks, or other identifiable features. The vineyards of Masseria Li Veli are mostly in Contrada Veli, which has been recognized by name since at least the 17th century. Other growers for this project are in nearby contrade. The Contrade label is styled after the rose window of the baroque Basilica di Santa Croce in the city of Lecce to the south.

We now have 2.5 acres of Montepulciano planted to four different blocks on our winery ranch. This wine comes from our first vineyard block near the creek, and a block we planted in 2007. The vines are planted to 4’ X 6’ spacing on 101-14 and 420-A rootstock. We believe our climate in Dry Creek is similar to the cooler hillside sites in Abruzzo resulting in a Montepulciano with brighter fruit and acidity. VINTAGE/HARVEST: 2015 was another excellent vintage for Montepulciano. The 2015 growing season featured drought-like growing conditions in the spring and summer. The warm and dry conditions allowed us to harvest our Montepulciano grapes early (September 29 - October 10th) with ideal sugar/acid numbers. Montepulciano is a vigorous vine, thus we routinely drop about 40-50% of the crop for uniform ripening, depth, and complexity. WINEMAKING: We fermented this Montepulciano in small open top tanks. It was de-stemmed, lightly crushed, and kept below 60 degrees for several days prior to spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast.

  • The Italian Wine Sector
The Italian Wine Sector 28 Feb 2017 The Italian wine sector is the world’s largest wine producer and its second largest exporter by volume behind Spain. This paper gives an overview of wine production, consumption, imports and exports for the Italian wine sector and how these compare with Australia. Production Italy produces the most wine of any country in the world. The OIV estimated that while Italian wine production fell by 1.2 per cent in 2016 to 4.9 billion litres this still placed Italy ahead of France (4.2 billion litres) and Spain (3.8 billion litres In comparison, Australian wine production is one quarter of Italy’s (1.2 billion litres). Between 2001 and 2015, Italian wine production averaged 4.7 billion litres, reaching a peak of 5.4 billion litres in 2006. Italian wines are categorised by their official quality level designation. The highest quality level in Italy is Denominazione d’Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), of which there are currently 74. The second level is Denominazione d’Origine Controllata (DOC). There are 334 DOCs. European Union (EU) law allows Italian producers to continue to use these terms, but the EU officially considers both to be at the same level of Protected Designation of Origin or PDO –known in Italy as Denominazione d’Origine Protetta (DOP). Therefore, the DOP list contains all 408 DOCs and DOCGs together. The quality level below this, which has less stringent requirements and therefore gives producers more flexibility on how they make their wines, is called Indicazione Geografica Protetta (IGP) – or Protected Geographic Indication in English.

  • Our Namesake, Coda Di Volpe, Comes from a Grape Only Found in Southern Italy
WINE Our namesake, Coda di Volpe, comes from a grape only found in Southern Italy. Pulled from near extinction, it is one that expresses the true landscape & vineyards of Campania. Meaning “Tail of the Fox,” Coda di Volpe has influenced our entire wine program. Some of the most dynamic wines in the world are being made & bottled from the six traditional regions of Southern Italy; Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily & Sardinia. Just as our namesake shows us a glimpse of the past, so do the other ancient varietals we have gathered on our list. By supporting small producers & native species, we strive to represent the vibrancy of Southern Italy’s present & future. • Ligurian Wines
Ligurian Wines Hemmed in between the Alps and Appenines which protect it from northern winds and the sea which ensures its mild climate, Liguria has few areas of level ground and has many short stream-like rivers. The patient, strenuous efforts made over many centuries have created a unique landscape with small plots of land maintained by dry-stone walling which were once cultivated with olive groves, lemon and orange orchards and vineyards, now largely replaced by greenhouses used for growing flowers and vegetables. The surviving vineyards, scattered far and wide, still produce numerous local wines even outside the most traditional areas and the zones considered most suitable for producing D.O.C. wines. One of the distinctive features of grape-growing and winemaking in Liguria is the part- time nature of the work by people who own small pieces of land split into small plots. Wineries would not be profitable so they are rare and almost inexistent. There are, however, remarkable cases of minute vineyards tended by passionately keen growers who, eager to achieve greater market success, have improved methods of cultivation and techniques to create high quality wines. The fragmented nature of the land under cultivation, the paucity of grapes (Ligurian wine represents 0.5% of Italian wine production) due to the nature of the terrain, the dry climate with occasional spells of drought, and arguably the individualistic character of Ligurians, have led to a vast range of products (85 types of wine have been identified) which stem from the excessive variety of grape varieties (about one hundred).

  • Italy's Country Report
Italy’s country report Traditions and habits Alcoholic beverages have always been an integral part of the Italian conviviality and hospitality. In order to have a fair overview of the social aspect of alcohol it is important to keep into account the historical, cultural, economical and social issues related to it. The Italian culture, especially the southern one, typical of the Mediterranean populations, have always shown a positive attitude toward alcohol and this is proven by the large number of traditions, proverbs and myths. In some regions small amounts of wine, for example, are given to children as it is supposed to “make good blood”. It is true that small amounts of alcohol provide energy, stimulate appetite, reduce thrombosis risk and increase HDL (good cholesterol) thus protecting our cardiovascular system. Most of our celebrations begin and end with a toast, and alcoholic beverages are often wrongly considered as energetic, stimulating and warming from the cold weather. In the past, some spirits such as “grappa” (schnaps) was considered a prevention against malaria, and some people still believe that alcohol is a good support when undertaking heavy labour. These attitudes, however, have caused an underestimation of the risks of a wrong alcohol consumption or abuse in our country. In Italy, as in all the Mediterranean countries, wine is the most popular alcoholic drink and, in the Mediterranean diet, it is considered as a “food” to take with your meals. Until recent times ago farmers would start their day with a glass of red wine as a source of energy for the hard labour in the fields.
