Algunos lo califican como Heavy Metal, otros, como el resultado de una mezcla entre Trash Metal y rock contemporáneo con influencias de estilo "gótico" (junto a una gran variedad de temas en sus letras, pero con gran inclinación de sus comentarios contra la política), otros, rock pesado, otros le dan un toque de Metal alternativo, con programación en sus ritmos y dotado de influencias asiáticas-europeas. Además de ello, Daron y Shavo le dieron a la banda el sonido moderno conocido como aggro Metal, un poco de rap, lo más gótico y oscuro, un toque escondido de jazz, a la vez que se mezclaban con dosis de rock y punk. Aparte de eso, su música está bastante influenciada por grupos como Black Sabbath. Esto se puede notar, por ej., en el video de BOOM! , donde Shavo Odadjian luce una remera negra con letras blancas que dice "Listen To Black Sabbath". Además, Serj Tankian interpretó Patterns con Tony Iommi, guitarrista de Black Sabbath. Incluso tocaron con ellos en varias oportunidades. Sin embargo, sus composiciones también están influenciadas por grupos como: Dead Kennedys, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, al igual que varios cantantes del folklore Armenio, como Harout Pamboukdjian (del cual Daron hace cover de su tema Julietta en vivo). Daron también nombra como influencia a Rush, Frank Zappa, Slayer, Pantera, Soundgarden, Charles Manson, Madonna, Obituary y por supuesto, Metallica. De todas formas, hay una cosa cierta: no les gusta que lo tilden de "rock armenio". Ellos mismos dicen que no hablan de ser armenios en sus letras. Una curiosidad: admiran a Faith No More porque Mike Patton nunca se preocupó por los hábitos de escuchar y, consecuentemente, lo hizo a su manera. 'El hombre es una de las principales razones por el cual hacemos música'. Es más, la banda no le pidió colaboración a Patton porque tenían vergüenza y pensaron que no querría, aunque a Patton si le hubiese gustado. En fin, esta unión de géneros convierten a System Of A Down en un grupo único, en especial debido a su in-definición en un género. Eso los hace distinto. Eso los hace especial. Eso los hace System Of A Down. De todas formas, System Of A Down, debido a que no está en un tipo de género específico, creó el género "System Of A Down". Hablando a grandes rasgos, se los podría clasificar como rock pesado o Metal, por el sólo hecho de darles una clasificación. Asimismo, John dice: "No creo que sonemos como nadie más. Nos considero como System Of A Down" . Por su parte, Shavo comenta: "Podés compararnos con quien quieras. No me interesa. Comparaciones y etiquetas no tienen efecto sobre esta banda. La realidad es la realidad. Somos lo que somos y ellos son lo que son" . -1- .

Their dark, neo-gothic alternative metal earned a cult following in the wake of the popularity of such likeminded bands as Korn and the Deftones. Vocalist Serj Tankian, guitarist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan formed System of a Down in Southern California in the mid-'90s. They quickly earned a strong following in Los Angeles, largely based on strong word of mouth. A three-song demo began circulating through metal collectors, and their fan base soon spread throughout not only America, but Europe and New Zealand. By the end of 1997, the group had signed to American, then distributed by Columbia Records. American/Columbia released the group's eponymous debut album in the summer of 1998, securing the band opening spots on the Slayer and Ozzfest tours. System eventually went gold, and set up the September 2001 release of the even more ambitious Toxicity. System's second effort was another heavy music triumph, shaming the majority of their nu-metal competition and running away with multi-platinum honors.
