VOLUME 8, ARTICLE 19 ELIE ASSIS, THE TEMPLE IN THE BOOK OF HAGGAI 1 2 JOURNAL OF HEBREW SCRIPTURES THE TEMPLE IN THE BOOK OF HAGGAI ELIE ASSIS BAR ILAN-UNIVERSITY The purpose of this article is to discuss the Temple ideology that characterizes the book of Haggai. Although Haggai does not directly elaborate on the theological importance of the Temple, nevertheless, we may draw some conclusions about the particular Temple theology advanced in the book in general and the prescribed role of the Temple in the life of Israel. Clearly the Temple occupies a central position in the book of Haggai. In fact, most of the book deals with Temple matters. Three out of the four prophetic speeches in the book deal, in one way or another with the Temple, and the fourth is not unrelated to it either. In his first prophecy, Haggai calls upon the nation to build the Temple (chapter 1). In the second, he urges them on when they slacken, after the construction work is already underway (2:1–9). The subject matter of the third prophecy is debated. The prevailing view is that this pericope is to be understood literally, that is, as dealing with matters of ritual purity in the Temple.1 Another position is that the prophecy expresses opposition to any intermingling with those from the northern region, later identified as Samarians (2:10–19).2 If this is the case, the prophecy would also be related to the building of the Temple, since, within this understanding, it would addresses the desire on the part of the Samarians to participate in the building of the Temple in Jerusalem (cf. -

The Book of Haggai
THE BOOK OF HAGGAI OT/NT: Old Testament SECTION: Minor Prophets (10 of 12) TRADITIONAL AUTHOR: Haggai KEY PEOPLE: Haggai, Joshua, Zerubbabel, people of Jerusalem and those returning from Exile. SUMMARY: Canonically, Haggai is the thirty-seventh book of the Holy Bible (1), the thirty-seventh book of the Old Testament (2) and the tenth of twelve Minor Prophets (3) books. Haggai is the first of three post-exilic prophets, followed by Zechariah (4) and Malachi (5). He was raised up by God to encourage His people to finish construction on the new Temple. In 586 BC, the Temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed. In 538 BC, King Cyrus of Persia allowed the Jews to return to return to their homeland to rebuild it. Under the leadership of Ezra (6) and Nehemiah (7), work on the second Temple had begun shortly after the exiles' arrival. While this group of dedicated worshipers made an admirable and ambitious start, they lost sight of their purpose and priorities. Opposition and apathy brought their efforts to a grinding halt. An inordinate focus on "self" has a way of do- ing that. Haggai steps onto the scene as a voice to urge and encourage them to get back on track. The timeless truth of seeking first the Kingdom, and all these other things shall be added unto you, is true today as it was then (Matthew 6:33). (a) While the new temple didn't meet their expectations, their efforts and faithfulness would be blessed. They could also be encour- aged by God's promise to build a New Jerusalem for His international Kingdom, defeat evil, and live in their midst. -

Is Jesus descended through the line of Solomon (Mt) or the line of Nathan (Lk)? Or both? 2. Are there 27 people from David to Jesus (Mt) or 42 (Lk)? 3. Who was Joseph’s father? Jacob (Mt) or Heli (Lk)? 4. What is the lineage of Shealtiel and Zerubbabel? a. Are they the same father-son pair in Mt as in Lk? (Apparently popular father-son names were repeated across families – as with Jacob and Joseph in Matthew’s genealogy) If not, then no problem. I will, for purposes of this discussion, assume that they are not the same father-son pair. b. If so, then there is another problem: i. Who was Shealtiel’s father? Jeconiah (Mt) or Neri (Lk)? ii. Who was Zerubbabel’s son? Abihud (Mt) or Rhesa (Lk)? And where are these two in the list of 1 Chronicles 3:19-20 ( 19b the sons of Zerubbabel were Meshullam and Hananiah, and Shelomith was their sister; 20 and Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah and Jushab-hesed, five)? Cultural Factors 1. Simple remarriage. It is likely that in most marriages, men were older and women were younger (e.g. Joseph and Mary). So it is also likely that when husbands died, many women remarried. This was true in ancient times: Boaz married the widow Ruth, David married the widow Bathsheba after Uriah was killed. It also seems likely to have been true in classical, 1 st century times: Paul (in Rom.7:1-3) suggests that this is at least somewhat common in the Jewish community (‘I speak to those under the Law’ he says) in the 1 st century. -

Notes on Haggai 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE AND WRITER The title of this prophetic book is also probably the name of its writer.1 Pieter Verhoef mentioned another possibility: "Koole … compares the way other prophetic books originated, and concludes that Haggai, like Jeremiah, probably dictated his own notes to one or two of his disciples. This procedure would account for the third person, the brevity of the record, and the peculiar use of the formula or revelation."2 Haggai referred to himself as simply "the prophet Haggai" (1:1; et al.) We know nothing about Haggai's parents, ancestors, or tribal origin. His name apparently means "festal" or possibly "feast of Yahweh." This is appropriate since much of what Haggai prophesied deals with millennial blessings. His name is a form of the Hebrew word hag, meaning "feast." This has led some students of the book to speculate that Haggai's birth may have occurred during one of Israel's feasts.3 Ezra mentioned that through the prophetic ministries of Haggai and Zechariah, the returned Jewish exiles resumed and completed the restoration of their temple (Ezra 1See R. http://scriptura.journals.ac.za/ Scriptura 102 (2009), pp. 579-593 HAGGAI AND ZECHARIAH 1-8: DIARCHIC MODEL OF LEADERSHIP IN A REBUILDING PHASE Danie O’Kennedy Old and New Testament University of Stellenbosch Abstract Yahwists in the post-exilic community in Jerusalem envisioned their future in diverse ways. The books of Haggai and Zechariah 1-8 emphasize that in a rebuilding phase God does not merely use a holy place but also special leaders. These books advocate a diarchic model of leadership in which the responsibilities are shared by a religious leader (Joshua) and a political leader (Zerubbabel). This article focuses on this diarchic model of leadership and offers possible responses to the following questions: What do we know of these two leaders? Why did Joshua need purification (Zech 3)? Who was the most influential leader or was there a balance of leadership? Was there conflict between these leaders? The article concludes with a comparison between the diarchic model of leadership in the post-exilic community in Jerusalem and leadership in the first years of a new democratic South Africa. Keywords: Haggai, Zechariah 1-8, Joshua, Zerubbabel, Leadership Introduction Birch et al. (1999:423-424) discuss the diverse ways in which Yahwists in the post-exilic community1 envisioned their future. According to them Haggai, Ezekiel 40-48 and Zechariah 1-8 (either Proto-Zechariah or First Zechariah)2 present the most concrete options. Ezekiel’s restoration vision represents a belief that Israel should be a hierocracy, a nation ruled by priests. Haggai seems to believe in the restoration of the Davidic monarchy through Zerubbabel, a member of the Davidic house.
