WARRANT OFFICER P. NORWOOD, CD1 Warrant Officer Patrick Norwood is retiring after 24+ years of service. He originally started his Military Career with at the Battle School in CFB Shilo in Sept 83 being the first basic crse to be run there since WW2. Upon completion of his Basic Training, joined 1RCHA G Bty and seen sunny places like Suffield, Wainwright, Fort Sill Oklahoma, and Avalanche Control in Revelstoke B.C. Posted 1985 – 1989 to 1 RCHA Z Bty Lahr Germany for his Bratwurst / Beer drinking Medal. Posted 1989 back to G Bty 1RCHA Shilo then after a month was, Posted to 1 CDHSR in CFB Kingston. However, when he was with them he saw the light and after 7 + years he transferred to the PERI trade for those who remember what it was. After completion of 6 months of physical torture in CFB Borden he was posted back to CFB Kingston as a PERI and work at both the Base Gym and RMC from 1990 – 1993. Posted 1993 to CFS Masset on the Queen Charlotte Islands only to close the Base in 1996 . Posted 1996 back to CFB Boren after successfully closing out CFS Masset he to help close out the PERI Trade till Mar 1997. Posted Mar.1997 to CFB Chilliwack, BC. to join the Engineers as an EGS Tech followed by a posting to CFB Comox in time to leave for the Ice Storms in Quebec back in 1998. That was the beginning of many road trips: Nov 1999 – Jun 2000 Kosovo, then Gagetown & Alert on TD for 2001, Jan. 2002 – Oct. 2002 Spent his time enjoying the Middle East, Oct 2003 – Apr.2004 CFS Alert , Sept 2005 – Dec 2005 CFB Gagetown , Feb. 2006 – Sept. 2006 the Afghan ( Middle East ) While not on tour he spent most of his time on ANG Deployments, Silver Flag in Florida and Course’s in Gagetown. Jul 2007 was posted to CFB Wainwright which got delayed till Aug because of the floods. WO Norwood will be releasing and starting his retirement leave in the Comox Valley as of the 8 Jan 2008. Pat has not made permanent plans but is considering employment as a civilian golf course mechanic. .

MWO Martin (Smiley) Nowell, CD After 41 + Years of Loyal and Dedicated
MWO Martin (Smiley) Nowell, CD After 41 + years of loyal and dedicated service to the CAF and the CME branch, MWO Nowell will be retiring on the 12th of August 2015. MWO Nowell was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1956. He joined the CF on the 13 of June 1974 as a Field Engineer. On completion of basic training and QL3 course Pte Nowell was posted to 3 Field Squadron, CFB Chilliwack. After almost five years in Chilliwack, Cpl Nowell was posted to CFB Shilo in May 1979. After seeing the light Cpl Nowell remustered to a Water sewage and POL tech in 1983 and was back in CFSME for his QL3 course. Upon completion of his course Cpl Nowell was posted to CFB Portage La Prairie. A quick 3 year posting in Portage Cpl Nowell was packing up and moving to CFB Cold Lake. During his posting to Cold Lake, in Dec 1990 Cpl Nowell had his first deployment to UNDOF (Golan Heights) for a six month tour. On the completion of his tour Cpl Nowell was on the move again being posted back to 1CER CFB Chilliwack in 1991. Within a year from returning from the Golan Heights Cpl Nowell was being deployed to Kuwait in April for a nine month tour. Upon returning from tour he was on a summer exercise in Wainwright AB. After the exercise he was on the move again in 1993 to CFB Winnipeg for his first posting there. During his posting to Winnipeg he was deployed to Somali for a six month tour.

This marks the first time the new J-model Hercules has flown in Afghanistan and the last tour of duty for older H-model that has been sustaining the CF in theatre since the fall of 2001. While the H models are maintained by 8 Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at 8 Wing Trenton, Ont. the CC- 130J marks a return to squadron maintenance. As a result, the H-model air- crew as well as the CC-130J air- crew and maintainers are all members of 436 (Transport) Squadron, also based at 8 Wing Photos: MCpl Lori Geneau, 8 Wing Imaging Trenton, Ont. The storm, affectionately nicknamed “the big one,” was the talk of the town for days leading up to it, and while some stayed home from work on the big day, 8 Wing Snow and Ice Control (SNIC) removal crews from the Wing Transportation/Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (WTn/EME) heavy equipment section enjoyed a different kind of snow day. Putting their expertise to work and working as a team for 12 to 13 straight hours at a time, SNIC crews plow, sweep, push and blow snow meticulously, ensuring a black-top surface allowing proper friction to be attained for the con- duct of safe aircraft landings and departures. His career in military aerospace engineering encompassed a wide number of positions at both field units and within the headquarters of the RCAF, before he retired after 35 years of service at the rank of Brigadier General. Now an aviation consultant and amateur historian, he is the author of other commercially available books on Canadian military aviation subjects and has published numerous articles as the Editor-In-Chief at Airforce magazine, the flagship publication of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association.
