Tolkien inevitably leads to a question of belief, that is, the question of whether readers actually believe in the fictional world and how that experience of belief generates meaning. Much of the scholarship on fantasy literature is very interested in this question, beginning with Tolkien’s own discussions of “Secondary belief” in his essay “On Faiy- Stories.” The existing criticism has succeeded in establishing a lexicon of terms that describes how a work of fantasy conveys meaning. -

You are heading to the dark land of Mordor in the realm of Middle-earth. The events that are set to transpire here are some time between the events of the Hobbit and those of the Lord of the Rings but as a whole do not really fit into Tolkien’s canon.
