Manresa and Saint Ignatius of Loyola
JOAN SEGARRA PIJUAN was born in Tárrega, Spain on June 29, 1926. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1942. Seventeen years later he completed his religious and cultural education. On July 29, 1956 – in the Year of Saint Ignatius – he was ordained at the cathedral in Manresa. He has spent much of his life in Veruela, Bar- celona, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Palma (Majorca), Raimat, Rome and Man- resa and has also lived in a number of countries in Central and South Ameri- ca, Africa and Europe. He has always been interested in spi- ritual theology and the study of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. SAINT IGNA- TIUS AND MANRESA describes the Saint’s sojourn here in a simple, rea- dable style. The footnotes and exten- sive bibliography will be of particular interest to scholars wishing the study the life of St. Ignatius in greater de- tail. This book deals only with the months Saint Ignatius spent in Man- resa, which may have been the most interesting part of his life: the months of his pilgrimage and his mystical en- lightenments. Manresa is at the heart of the Pilgrim’s stay in Catalonia because “between Ignatius and Man- resa there is a bond that nothing can break” (Torras y Bages). Regis University ([email protected]) Abstract A number of inaccuracies are circulating in the field of Ignatian Spirituality that can hinder a richer and more profitable understanding of the saint and his doctrine. Jesuits and colleagues would do well to remain conscious of the conditions that generate and perpetuate these inaccuracies. Also included in this essay is the true origin of a quotation popularly attributed to Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ, “There is nothing more practical than finding God.” Introduction makes it risky to deny that something is to be found inside. Today, however, one can search U.S. Jesuits and colleagues in the last sixty years most of these sources electronically or with have made tremendous strides in the promotion concordances. -

THEATRICAL ELEMENTS IN BAROQUE FESTIVALS (THE JESUIT CELEBRATIONS IN THE GOLDEN AGE)1 Ignacio Arellano GRISO-Universidad de Navarra Feast of the saints and dramatic elements In the set of elements integrated into festive and spectacular Ba- roque hagiographical celebrations, there are some theatrical and para- theatrical. These elements vary from the more or less didactic and religious to the fun, close to the more grotesque comicalness. The are especially important the series of Jesuit celebrations2 of the first and last decades of the seventeenth century with the beatifi- cation and canonization of Saint Ignatius, Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Francis de Borja (comprehensible due to the strong tendency of the Society of Jesus towards didactic uses of theatre). Other manifes- tations can be added also in the canonization of Saint Theresa, Saint Philip Neri and Saint Isidro (at the same time as Saint Ignatius and Saint Francis, 1622). May they be means to God through St. Ignatius of Loyola, whose Feast we celebrate on July 31. We encourage the readers to use them for spiritual reading, personal reflection and prayer, and in the process be transformed and renewed gently by God. Published by the American Assistancy Seminar on Jesuit Spirituality, especially for American Jesuits working out their aggiornamento in the spirit of Vatican Council II September, 1981 No. 4 THE AMERICAN ASSISTANCY SEMINAR ON JESUIT SPIRITUALITY consists of a group of Jesuits from various provinces who are listed below. The members were appointed by the Fathers Provincial of the United States. The Purpose of the Seminar is to study topics pertaining to the spir- itual doctrine and practice of Jesuits, especially American Jesuits, and to communicate the results to the members of the Assistancy. The hope is that this will lead to further discussion among all American Jesuits--in private, or in small groups, or in community meetings. All this is done in the spirit of Vatican Council II 's recommendation to religious institutes to recapture the original charismatic inspiration of their founders and to adapt it to the changed circumstances of modern times. The members of the Seminar wel- come reactions or comments in regard to the topics they publish. To achieve these purposes, especially amid today's pluralistic cul- tures, the Seminar must focus its direct attention sharply, frankly, and specifically on the problems, interests, and opportunities of the Jesuits of the United States. However, many of these interests are common also to Jes- uits of other regions, or to other priests, religious men or women, or lay men or women. Hence the studies of the Seminar, while meant especially for American Jesuits, are not exclusively for them. -

Used with permission 6 For the Greater Glory of God: St~ Ignatius Loyola JoHN PATRICK DoNNELLY, S.J.* Ignatius Loyola is a central figure, perhaps the prototypical figure of the Counter-Reformation, and the way he has been seen partly reflects the way historians of the early twentieth century have viewed the Counter Reformation. The word Counter-Reformation and its equivalents in all west- · ern languages have negative connotations: it has been seen as a movement that revivifies medieval ideals against humanism or that blocks the mod ernization of the church through the creative, enlightened forces of Protes tantism, thereby insuring a sterile period between the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. Increasingly, contemporary historians have abandoned such simple ·views. Art historians, for instance, have come to a more favor:. able view of the Baroque and the Jesuit role in art from 1550 to 1700. 1 Historians, such as Jean Delumeau and A. G. Dickens, have tried to study the Counter-Reformation on its own merits, seeing it in relation to the social, intellectual, and cultural development of Catholic Europe and showing how it unleashed forces that remained influential down into the eighteenth century. -

Ignacio de Loyola. On September 27, 1540, Pope Paulus III gave formal approbation of the Society of Jesus by the bull Regimini militantis ecclesiae. With the Pope's signature the Society of Jesus, as a fully canonical religious order, had become a reality. On March 4, 1541, during Lent, the first Jesuits gathered to work in the constitutions. They agreed to choose a Superior General for life. The first election was very solemnly conducted on April 2, 1541. During three days the six companions gave themselves up to prayer for guidance in their choice. Then their sealed votes, together with those of the absentees previously obtained, except Bobadilla's, were placed in a box and left to be, as it were, consecrated by a further three days of prayer. At length the time arrived to scrutinize them: "Jesus. Excluding myself, I give my vote in Our Lord to him who receives a majority of votes to be the superior. I have given it indeterminately for good reasons, but if the Society thinks otherwise, or that it is better and more to the glory of God for me to particularize, I am ready to do so." Jesuit Winemaking and Art Production in Northern New Spain
journal of jesuit studies 6 (2019) 294-314 brill.com/jjs Jesuit Winemaking and Art Production in Northern New Spain Katherine Moore McAllen University of Texas Rio Grande Valley [email protected] Abstract This article presents new research on Jesuit visual culture in northern New Spain, situ- ating Santa María de las Parras (founded 1598) as an important site where the Jesuits and secular landowners became involved in the lucrative business of winemaking. Viticulture in Parras helped transform this mission settlement into a thriving center of consumption. The Jesuits fostered alliances with Spanish and Tlaxcalan Indians to serve their religious and temporal interests, as these patrons donated funds to deco- rate chapels in the Jesuit church of San Ignacio. This financial support allowed the Society to purchase paintings by prominent artists in Mexico City and import them to Parras. The Jesuits arranged their chapels in a carefully ordered sequencing of images that promoted Ignatian spirituality and echoed iconographic decoration programs in Mexico City and Rome. The focus of these religious orders was to promote evangelization and protect the physical boundaries of the empire.
