  • 1 Self-Representation of Arab Female Influencers on Instagram
Self-representation of Arab Female Influencers on Instagram: A qualitative and quantitative analysis Sara S. Elmaghraby ∗ Abstract This paper aims at exploring the new media platform (Instagram) and its role in offering an innovative platform for women to present themselves, and, to break stereotypes. It aims at identifying the ways Arab Female Influencers present themselves to their followers on Instagram visually and verbally. In order to collect the sample of the Arab Influencers, a survey was conducted on 100 female college students. Then a quantitative and qualitative analysis was conducted on the accounts of 115 Arab female influencers that these students followed the most. Influencers were divided according to their careers, and their official accounts and were analyzed according to a 7-category coding scheme. The last post published on their account was described with its caption, hashtag, tag, and visual frame. The paper concluded that college students prefer to follow actresses, singers and fashionistas, travel bloggers and nutritionists. It also concluded that Arab female influencers mainly tend to present themselves promoting their work and publishing personal stories on this new media platform (Instagram). Keywords: Instagram, Gender, Middle East, Framing, Visual studies, Self Representation ∗ Teacher at Journalism department Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University 1 Introduction After Goffman suggested his theory of self–presentation (Goffman, 1959) several types of research defined self- presentation as a behavior that tries to deliver information about oneself or some image of oneself to other people. According to Baumeister self-presentation “ denotes a class of motivations in human behavior (…) that are in part stable dispositions of individuals but they depend on situational factors to elicit them.

  • Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio Between the US and Syria
Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music.

Chapter 7 “Welcome to the Camps”:1 The Emergence of Palestinian Rap in Lebanon, a New Social and Political Song Nicolas Puig ombining the festive and aesthetic dimensions of protest, rap is now blossoming among a category of young Palestinians Cas a powerful vector channeling political and social messages. Still confidential and sometimes condemned, this form of music represents a special mode of expression related to the new generation, which stands out in the current cultural landscape. Indeed, the emergence of Palestinian rap in Lebanon and in Arab countries generally, raises the question of the appearance of a cultural activity characterized by a sense of strangeness and distinctiveness.2 As one of the cultural activities anchored in the city, rap testifies to the urbanity of the individual and constitutes a matrix of neighborhood and refugee camp representations.

SOLIDARITY & SCHISM: TWITTER NETWORKS OF EGYPT’S REVOLUTION SOLIDARITY AND SCHISM: TWITTER NETWORKS OF THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION By DEENA ABUL-FOTTOUH, B.A.(HH), M.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy McMaster University © Copyright by Deena Abul-Fottouh, December 2016 Doctor of Philosophy (2016) McMaster University (Sociology) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Solidarity and Schism: Twitter Networks of The Egyptian Revolution AUTHOR: Deena Abul-Fottouh, B.A.(HH), M.A.(The American University in Cairo) SUPERVISOR: Dr. Tina Fetner COMMITTEE MEMBERS: Dr. Melanie Heath Dr. Paul Glavin NUMBER OF PAGES: xii, 174 ii Abstract This research builds on the social movements theory of networks and coalition building, the theory of digital activism, and the social networks theory of organizations to study the rich case of online mobilization for the 2011 Egyptian revolution. I use the analytical tools of social network analysis to study Twitter networks of activists of the Egyptian revolution in early 2011, when solidarity characterized the movement, and late 2014, when schism spread it apart. In this, I investigate how the repertoire of online activism relates to the on-the-ground movement. The social movements theory of networks states that activists’ ideological congruence, the presence of bridge builders who bring the movement together, and the presence of previous ties among the activists are all factors of coalition building and movement solidarity. This dissertation tested the role of these factors in the Twitter networks of Egyptian activists. The results suggest that digital activism complements rather than mirrors on-the-ground activism.

  • Engagement: Coptic Christian Revival and the Performative Politics of Song
THE POLITICS OF (DIS)ENGAGEMENT: COPTIC CHRISTIAN REVIVAL AND THE PERFORMATIVE POLITICS OF SONG by CAROLYN M. RAMZY A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Carolyn Ramzy (2014) Abstract The Performative Politics of (Dis)Engagment: Coptic Christian Revival and the Performative Politics of Song Carolyn M. Ramzy A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Music, University of Toronto 2014 This dissertation explores Coptic Orthodox political (dis)engagement through song, particularly as it is expressed through the colloquial Arabic genre of taratil. Through ethnographic and archival research, I assess the genre's recurring tropes of martyrdom, sacrifice, willful withdrawal, and death as emerging markers of community legitimacy and agency in Egypt's political landscape before and following the January 25th uprising in 2011. Specifically, I explore how Copts actively perform as well as sing a pious and modern citizenry through negations of death and a heavenly afterlife. How do they navigate the convergences and contradictions of belonging to a nation as minority Christian citizens among a Muslim majority while feeling that they have little real civic agency? Through a number of case studies, I trace the discursive logics of “modernizing” religion into easily tangible practices of belonging to possess a heavenly as well as an earthly nation. I begin with Sunday Schools in the predominately Christian and middle-class neighborhood of Shubra where educators made the poetry of the late Coptic Patriarch, Pope Shenouda III, into taratil and drew on their potentials of death and withdrawal to reform a Christian moral interiority and to teach a modern and pious Coptic citizenry.

  • Women in Sha'bi Music: Globalization, Mass Media and Popular Music in the Arab World
WOMEN IN SHA'BI MUSIC: GLOBALIZATION, MASS MEDIA AND POPULAR MUSIC IN THE ARAB WORLD DANA F. ACEE A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC December 2011 Committee: David Harnish, Advisor Kara Attrep © 2011 Dana F. Acee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor This thesis focuses on sha’bi music, a style of popular music in the Arab world. More specifically, it discusses the role of women in sha’bi music, focusing on singers Nancy Ajram and Haifa Wehbe as examples of female pop singers. I take a feminist approach to understanding the lives, images, and legacies of two of the most influential female singers of the twentieth century, Umm Kulthum and Fairouz, and then I explore how these legacies have impacted the careers and societal expectations of Ajram and Wehbe. Several issues are explicated in the thesis, including the historic progression of popular music, the impacts of globalization and westernization, and the status of women as performers in the Arab world. The fan bases of the various female sha’bi singers are explored to examine why people are drawn to popular music, how youth cultures utilize music to define their generations, and why some people in the Arab world have problems with this music and/or with the singers: their lyrics, clothing, dancing bodies, and music videos.
