Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(s) of an Inland and Mountainous Region Eleni Salavoura1 Abstract: The concept of space is an abstract and sometimes a conventional term, but places – where people dwell, (inter)act and gain experiences – contribute decisively to the formation of the main characteristics and the identity of its residents. Arkadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese, is a landlocked country with small valleys and basins surrounded by high mountains, which, according to the ancient literature, offered to its inhabitants a hard and laborious life. Its rough terrain made Arkadia always a less attractive area for archaeological investigation. However, due to its position in the centre of the Peloponnese, Arkadia is an inevitable passage for anyone moving along or across the peninsula. The long life of small and medium-sized agrarian communities undoubtedly owes more to their foundation at crossroads connecting the inland with the Peloponnesian coast, than to their potential for economic growth based on the resources of the land. However, sites such as Analipsis, on its east-southeastern borders, the cemetery at Palaiokastro and the ash altar on Mount Lykaion, both in the southwest part of Arkadia, indicate that the area had a Bronze Age past, and raise many new questions. In this paper, I discuss the role of Arkadia in early Mycenaean times based on settlement patterns and excavation data, and I investigate the relation of these inland communities with high-ranking central places. In other words, this is an attempt to set place(s) into space, supporting the idea that the central region of the Peloponnese was a separated, but not isolated part of it, comprising regions that are also diversified among themselves. -

THE ACHAIANS IN NAUPAKTOS AND KALYDON IN THE FOURTH CENTURY T HE PROBLEMOF ACHAIANCONTROL of Kalydonand Naupaktos as outposts on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth in the 4th century is a very difficultone, and although the sources for the history of these two cities are substantially different, there is some overlap which compels us to consider them together. The sources are relatively few and scattered,and much scholarshipon the problemconsists of attemptsto fill the blanks.1 Originally Kalydonwas an Aitolian city, and it is describedas such in Homer.2 Xeno- phon says it was formerly Aitolian3 and was in the possession of the Achaians who had given its inhabitants Achaian citizenship; in 389 B.C. it was garrisoned by the Achaians because of the threat of an attack by the Akarnanianswith help from the Athenians and Boiotians.4How or when it became Achaian is left unstated, but they must already have held it for a few years, and the fact that its inhabitantshad been given citizenship suggests that it was the result of a somewhat friendly arrangement.5This granting of Achaian citi- zenship foreshadowsthe ease with which the Achaian League grantedAchaian citizenship I Xenophon, Hellenika iv.6.I and Iv.6.14 and Diodoros, IV.75.2 are the evidence for this first period of Achaian control of these sites. Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

This is related to its great cul- tural significance, since the ancient Greeks considered this mountain as the habitat of their Gods, ever since Zeus became the dominant figure of the ancient Greek re- ligion and consequently the protagonist of the cultural regime. Before the genera- tion of Zeus, Olympus was inhabited by the generation of Cronus. In this paper we shall refer to a lesser known mythological reference which, in our opinion, presents similarities to the geotectonic evolution of the wider area of Olympus. According to Apollodorus and other great authors, the God Poseidon and Iphimedia had twin sons, the Aloades, namely Otus and Ephialtes, who showed a tendency to gigantism. When they reached the age of nine, they were about 16 m. tall and 4.5 m. wide. -

Man noticed that time could be broken up into units of the day (the time taken for the earth to rotate once on its axis), the month (the time taken for the moon to orbit the earth) and the year (the time taken for the earth to orbit the sun). This information was needed so as to know when to plant crops and when to hold religious ceremonies. The problems were that a month is not made up of an integral number of days, a year is not made of an integral number of months and neither is a year made up of an integral number of days. This caused man to use his ingenuity to overcome these problems and produce a calendar which enabled him to keep track of time. The ways in which these problems were tackled down the centuries and across the world is the subject of this Web site. It is recommended that you start by looking at the Comparison of Calendars. In many people’s minds it looms large as an imaginary, idealized landscape, a paradise treated as such by Virgil in the 1st Century BCE1, employed as the backdrop of landscape paintings by Poussin in the 18th Century and still the subject of modern novels about journeys to paradise.2 This view would not be wrong but, unlike the comparable Elysian, Arkadian ‘fields’ are tangible and can be visited in person. It is a region of both modern and ancient Greece, the landscapes of which deserve a reappraisal. This paper attempts to do just that, during a period that raises questions regarding continuity and change; the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age (c.1600-800 BCE). This involves using a post-processual, interpretive approach, which employs an empathic view of landscape – an approach perhaps more at home in British prehistoric archaeology.3 Archaeological Investigation of Arkadia Located in the central Peloponnese, Arkadia has received relatively little attention archaeologically compared to other areas of Greece. This has been the case particularly for the LBA and EIA, although the 1990s saw a plethora of surveys take place which, due to their diachronic nature have provided evidence for the period in question.4 Nonetheless, much of the archaeological work in Arkadia (as in the rest of Greece) has been motivated by a desire to illustrate well known ancient literary sources, concerned with individual sites and well-known periods, for example the temple of Bassae, Mantinea, Megalopolis, Tegea and Stymphalos.5 That these sites were located in Arkadia was hardly relevant. -

Vostrikov1 Abstract This article interests in history of armed forces of the antiquity states, their structure, deployment order, the organization of command, evolution of arms, policy strokes, action of armies in the military conflicts, and to their use in internal political fight, as well as to involvement of mercenaries. During the Classical Period of Greek history big fame was gained by armed forces of Athens and Sparta. Athens in the 5th century BC was at the peak of power and pursued active foreign policy which was in many respects supported by powerful army and fleet. The reason of traditionally high interest in history of Athens of the Classical Period including the armed forces history of the polis also lies in it. However Athens and their armed forces suffered a serious loss and got beaten in the Peloponnese war and the final decline of political and military power of Athens occurred after defeat in Lamian war therefore military activity of the polis sharply decreases. Therefore the history of Hellenistic period Athens gets much less attention.
