Evaluation of the catastrophe 1.1 Initial situation and analysis Affected zone 2 Pakistan Partners Mission Report On October 8th 2005 at 3.50 am GMT, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India were rocked by an earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale according to the American Geological Institute (USGS) and the National Network for Earthquake Surveillance in Strasbourg (RENASS). Earthquakes comparable to the one on October 8th have been recorded throughout the Himalayan chain of mountains. For example, in 1905 approximately 500 kms South East of Hazara ( the Kangra earthquake, 7.8-8 magnitude, around 20,000 victims) ; 1934 East Nepal, magnitude 8.1, around 10,000 victims. The main regions affected are North Western India, eastern Afghanistan and above all North Pakistan. Afghanistan The tremor was felt in the capital Kabul and in several villages in the east and north-east. However, in the middle of the day, the Ministry of the Interior estimated that damage had not extended into the countryside. A civil servant in Jalalabad, in the east of the country, only indicated that at least two children had been killed and several houses destroyed. India The earthquake had been felt strongly in India. Thousands of terrified inhabitants had fled their homes. The citizens of New Delhi had panicked following the tremor and were out in the streets.

It brought a greater damage to whole infrastructure including roads, health facilities, different institutional facilities and above all the sever damages of about 600,000 houses including scattered waste rural and urban 2 houses in area of 30,000 Km expanding North East of Pakistan and State of Azad Jammun and Kashmir. To provide the shelter at transitional level and challenge of reconstruction of private houses was one of the first step that ERRA took on. Population in rural area was more vulnerable due to access to them for relief and rehabilitation.

The present research work was designed together indigenous knowledge of medicinal plant species, which are being utilized by the local inhabitants of the area of Muzaffarabad Division. The Plant specimens were collected from various sites of District Neelum, Muzaffarabad and Hattian Balla. Medicinal claims were also collected from the people at various survey sites for the treatment of a number of diseases. The medicinal properties of plant species have made an outstanding contribution in the origin and evolution of many traditional herbal therapies. These destructions of natural habitats by overgrazing, new habitations, indiscriminate, deforestation and over exploitation of various economically important medicinal plants has resulted in the environmental stirs in the mountainous areas consequently some of the common plants have become endangered and rare plants are on the verge of extinction. During the investigation it was found that the person practicing this art does not easily reveal knowledge to others present investigation carried out during the month of July-August (2012).
