Catalogue of the Vascular Epiphytic Flora of Uruguay

ABSTRACT We provide an updated list of the vascular epiphytic flora occurring in native environments of Uruguay based on literature review, herbarium specimens, and fieldwork throughout the country. The catalogue provides standardized information for each species, including accepted name, synonyms used within Uruguay, epiphytic category, distribution within the country, habitat, conservation status, observations, and a voucher citation. The effort documented 73 species for the epiphytic flora of Uruguay (3 % of the flora), distributed among 29 genera and 12 families. Bromeliaceae was the richest family (17), followed by Polypodiaceae (16) and Orchidaceae (12). Tillandsia stood out as the most speciose genus with 15 species. Characteristic holoepiphytes was the most diverse ecological category. More than half of the epiphytic species documented for Uruguay (53 %) reach their southernmost geographic distribution in the country, whereas only two mostly epipetric species of Tillandsia — T. arequitae and T. uruguayensis — are endemic to the country. Almost half of the epiphytic species found are presently under categories of threat of extinction, with 60 % of them occurring in national protected areas. Both the richest epiphytic families and the predominance of characteristic holoepiphytes coincide with findings from floristic and ecological studies previously carried out in humid subtropical regions. Notes on the distribution, status, and research priorities of little-known small carnivores in Brazil Tadeu G. de OLIVEIRA Abstract Ten species of small carnivores occur in Brazil, including four procyonids, four mustelids (excluding otters), and two mephitids. On the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species eight are assessed as Least Concern and two as Data Deficient. The state of knowledge of small carnivores is low compared to other carnivores: they are among the least known of all mammals in Brazil. The current delineation of Bassaricyon and Galictis congeners appears suspect and not based on credible information. Research needs include understanding dis- tributions, ecology and significant evolutionary units, with emphasis on theAmazon Weasel Mustela africana. Camera Installation Instructions Before going into the field: The following field equipment and supplies need to be ready and packed before the team leaves for a field assignment: 1) Trail camera unit. Unit should include the actual trail camera with 8 Eneloop batteries and SD card already in place, the trail camera armored case with label attached, and the master python cable lock with matching key on keychain. REMEMBER!!! When packing the camera traps to take in the field do not store them with food or any other substances that might attach odors to the camera trap. Food or other smells might attract animals to the camera trap in the field, thus biasing the estimates of detection probability. 2) GPS capable device. This can either be a portable or handheld GPS unit or a GPS- capable smartphone with either the TopoMaps+ (iPhone) or Backcountry Navigator (Android) application downloaded. 3) Fieldwork folder. The fieldwork folder should include this camera installation sheet; the datasheet required for each check; the station placard to be displayed after a deployment, check, or takedown; a dry erase marker, and a pen. 4) Hiking equipment. Please make sure to have AT LEAST the following whenever going out into the field: a. Daypack and hiking partner (all volunteers MUST be accompanied by AT LEAST one other person b. Map, GPS, or compass c. Extra clothing, food, and water d. First-aid kit e. Headlamp or flashlight f. Matches and fire-starting kit or lighter g. Knife or multi-use camping tool h. Sunglasses and sunscreen i. Water treatment device j. -

Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract The genus Peperomia is represented by eight species in Uruguay: P. catharinae, P. comarapana, P. hispidula, P. increscens, P. pereskiifolia, P. psilostachya, P. tetraphylla and P. trineuroides. Peperomia psilostachya is reported for the first time for the flora of Uruguay, from material collected in moist hillside and riverside forests from the northeast and east of the coun- try. Three new synonyms are proposed: P. arechavaletae var. arechavaletae as synonym of P. trineuroides, P. arechavaletae var. minor of P. tetraphylla and P. trapezoidalis of P. psilostachya. Lectotypes for P. arechavaletae, P. arechavaletae var. minor and P. tacuariana, and a neotype for P. herteri are designated. The taxonomic treatment includes synonymies used in Uruguay, morphological descriptions, distribution and habitat data, phenology, conservation assesment, observations, and material examined for each species treated. A species identification key, plant illustrations and distribution maps in Uruguay are provided.
