He became the crimefighting super hero called… BACK TO BASICS Part Four Remember that radioactive spider we mentioned? At the top of this page? Well, the Isotope Genome Accelerator made it that way. And Peter just got caught in an experiment designed to reverse engineer its capabilities, and was split in two! One mild-mannered civilian, Peter, and one fast- talking super hero, Spider-Man! Initially, both were excited--Peter could have a normal life without endangering his loved ones, and Spider-Man could fight and tame the Tri-Sentinel (for example). But Dr. Connors--the experiment’s designer--and Peter have come come to realize the Isotope Genome Accelerator divides personality traits as well as physical attributes. Who is Peter Parker without his wit or love of science? And more importantly, who is Spider-Man without his sense of responsibility? “WE ARE THE WALKING DEAD:” ZOMBIE SPACES, MOBILITY, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR SECURITY IN ZONE ONE AND THE WALKING DEAD A RESEARCH PAPER SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTERS OF ARTS BY JESSIKA O. GRIFFIN DR. AMIT BAISHYA – ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2012 “We are the walking dead:” Zombified Spaces, Mobility, and the Potential for Security in Zone One and The Walking Dead “I didn’t put you in prison, Evey. I just showed you the bars” (170). —V, V For Vendetta The zombie figure is an indispensible, recurring player in horror fiction and cinema and seems to be consistently revived, particularly in times of political crisis. Film is the best-known medium of zombie consumption in popular culture, and also the most popular forum for academic inquiry relating to zombies. However, this figure has also played an increasingly significant role in written narratives, including novels and comic books. Throughout its relatively short existence, no matter the medium, the zombie has functioned as a mutable, polyvalent metaphor for many of society’s anxieties, with zombie film production spiking during society’s most troublesome times, including times of war, the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and, more recently, 9/11.1 In Shocking Representations, Adam Lowenstein describes the connection between historical events and cinema by first describing how history is experienced collectively. Lowenstein describes historical traumas as “wounds” in the sense that they are painful, but also in that they continue to “bleed through conventional confines of time and space” (1).

  • Surviving the End
Surviving The End A study of encounters with post-apocalyptic evil and survival strategies in Matheson’s I am Legend, McCarthy’s The Road, and Kirkman’s The Walking Dead: Compendium One ENG-3992 Kristian Bø Master’s Thesis in English Literature Faculty of Humanities, Social Studies and Education University of Tromsø Spring 2013 “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look into an abyss, the abyss looks back into you” --Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my tutor professor dr.philos. Gerd Karin Bjørhovde. Thank you for your patience, knowledge and your constructive criticism. To Henriette, thank you for your support and tips regarding my thesis. When writing such a paper it is always good to have someone to talk to. Thank you for being there. To my parents and family, thank you for your support and the interest you have shown in my thesis. You have repeatedly asked me the simple question: “What are you writing about?” which prompted me to think: “What Am I writing about?”. iii Abstract In this thesis the aim is to explore the dichotomy/duality of man in three post-apocalyptic texts and discuss how and why survivors react to the post-apocalyptic setting. Since a majority of post- apocalyptic fictional texts focus on the destruction of the world set to contemporary issues, this thesis will explore how the post-apocalyptic setting will force survivors into making difficult survival choices and discuss how the survivors cope with living in a devastated place.

Page 143 MULTIMEDIA REVIEWS Glossary: Nintendo DS: latest handheld Nintendo game system. It has a secondary touch screen, adding a greater interactive gaming experience. Survival Horror: Video games where your only mission is to survive. Slowdown: Occurs during game play, when too many things occur on screen at one time, resulting in the graphics slowing down or jumping. FMV: ‘Full Motion Video’ – a video sequence you watch rather than play, often used to advance the plot. NPC: ‘NonPlayable Character’ – any characters that are controlled by the computer rather than the player. Survival Horror: The Good, the Bad and the Zombie Eoin Murphy What differentiates video games from movies is that they do away with the barrier placed between the participant and the action depicted onscreen. In other words, a video game puts the player squarely in the midst of the story. Your choices, rather than those of the author or director decide what happens next, whether you live to fight on to another level or end up as a mindless zombie scrabbling for brain matter. This article is intended to welcome the noninitiated to the world of horror games and give you a taste of what’s been missing in your life. The taste of raw human flesh… Horror games have been around for almost as long as games consoles. The original of these games was Sweet Home, produced for the Famicon, the Japanese name for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game tells the story of five people going to the mansion of dead artist Manyimas to take photos of her frescos.

  • The Narratology of Comic Art
The Narratology of Comic Art By placing comics in a lively dialogue with contemporary narrative theory, The Narratology of Comic Art builds a systematic theory of narrative comics, going beyond the typical focus on the Anglophone tra dition. This involves not just the exploration of those properties in com ics that can be meaningfully investigated with existing narrative theory, but an interpretive study of the potential in narratological concepts and analytical procedures that has hitherto been overlooked as well. This research monograph is, then, not an application of narratology in the medium and art of comics, but a revision of narratological concepts and approaches through the study of narrative comics. Thus, while narrato logy is brought to bear on comics, equally comics are brought to bear on narratology.
