You have repeatedly asked me the simple question: “What are you writing about?” which prompted me to think: “What Am I writing about?”. iii Abstract In this thesis the aim is to explore the dichotomy/duality of man in three post-apocalyptic texts and discuss how and why survivors react to the post-apocalyptic setting. Since a majority of post- apocalyptic fictional texts focus on the destruction of the world set to contemporary issues, this thesis will explore how the post-apocalyptic setting will force survivors into making difficult survival choices and discuss how the survivors cope with living in a devastated place. Additionally, the thesis will discuss notions of humanity, civility and evil in the selected texts and why these are important. Post-apocalyptic fictions deal with survivors of the apocalypse, depicting how they cope with living in the new wasteland. This thesis is a study of three fictional post-apocalyptical texts. These texts are Matheson’s I am Legend (1954), McCarthy’s The Road (2004), and Kirkman’s comic book/graphic novel The Walking Dead: Compendium One (2009). The earliest of these texts is set in the 1950’s, and presents a protagonist determined to fix the post-apocalyptic situation. The two other texts are both from the 21st century and depict different ways of dealing with the post-apocalyptic scenario. Based on the apocalyptic event the post-apocalypse can spawn many new dangerous elements. A viral pandemic can create zombies, vampires, or other dangerous mutations. The post-nuclear war society may be threatened by toxic gases, acid rain, fallout, radiation damage and generally hazardous living conditions. The post-apocalyptic wasteland is a dangerous place to be, but do the survivors make this place better or worse? This thesis aims to explore the dichotomy/duality of man in three post-apocalyptic texts and discuss how and why survivors react to the post-apocalyptic setting. This is of great significance to post-apocalyptic fiction as it revolves around a major theme of the genre: survival (strategies). Additionally, by visiting scenes from each text, this thesis will seek information concerning the importance of humanity and morality when discussing the notion of evil. Each scene will be compared to discover the difference in survival, groups versus sole survivor. The thesis will also sometimes use examples from other media to show similarities and further strengthen points made. Certain media, for example video games, allow the ‘experiencer’ to gain control of the narrative and apply their own moral code to the scenario; in a way enter the post-apocalyptic wasteland. 1 1.1 Apocalyptic Interest My interest in the genre started early when I first questioned the lawless nature of the fictional post-apocalyptic world. The post-apocalyptic wasteland is more or less without police and any governing body, and if they are still present they are hidden away from harm. In Kirkman’s comic book/graphic novel The Walking Dead (2010) some survivors believe that the government will come and rescue everybody. Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of protagonist ‘Jim’ in the motion picture “28 Days Later” (2002) by Danny Boyle says it best when prompted that there is no government: ”What do you mean there’s no government? There’s always a government, they’re in a bunker or a plane somewhere”1. When a nuclear bomb destroys most of the world, cities, civilizations and people, the survivors are left with the responsibility to rebuild and re-establish society. This is also a good opportunity for the lawless to take advantage of the situation. The Fallout video game-series proves that re- establishing a functioning civilization is not an easy task and plenty of smaller settlements appear to be of dystopian nature. These settlements are mostly established by power-hungry survivors who just want to be addressed as king or emperor: they have no idea how to properly run the village/settlement. These video games allow the player to step outside the borders of the traditional good-guy bad-guy norms and assume or create a role of your choosing. Dystopias are often created in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event2.This means that society has started to develop and some kind of civilization is taking form. The dystopian state offers

Five seasons of the show were analyzed to determine the characteristics of those in power. Dialogue is important in understanding how the leaders came to power and how they interact with the people in the group who have no authority. The physical characteristics of the leaders were also examined to better understand who was likely to be in a position of power. In the episodes in the sample, leaders fit into a specific demographic. Most who are portrayed as having authority over the others are Caucasian, middle-aged men, though other characters often show equivalent leadership potential. Women are depicted as incompetent leaders and vulnerable, and traditional gender roles are largely maintained. Findings show that male conformity was most prevalent overall, though instances did decrease over the course of five seasons. Emmett Winn Fall 1997 Issue of KINEMA IN 1981 THE AUSTRALIAN-MADE FILM The Road Warrior drove into the US film market.(1) The film was well received and quickly became, at that time, the most popular Australian movie ever releasedin the US, and since its debut has played regularly on US cable television.(2) Much has been written about the international success of this film and its predecessor, Mad Max, and the last in the trilogy Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.(3) Contributing to that body of research, this paper addresses the American success of this Australian film within the cultural/political context of the US at the time of its North American release,and discusses its resonance with Reaganism. The fundamental goal of this examination is to situate the films in the larger context of cultural hegemony. The importance of this study lies in the critique of these films as they aid us in understanding the hegemonic process and the American box office triumph of The Road Warrior. I investigate how the trilogy in general, and The Road Warrior specifically, resonates with the social field of its time. These films entered the US during a period of renewed nationalistic interest and conservatism linked with the Reagan/Bush administrations. As Stuart Hall explains, the meanings of cultural products are partially provided by their time. In his article ”Notes on Deconstructing ’The Popular’” he states: The meaning of a cultural symbol is given in part by the social field into which it is incorporated, the practices which it articulates and is made to resonate.

Drawing on questionnaires completed by mothers across the UK, this MOTHERS ON MOTHERS book sheds new light on the varied and diverse ways in which expectant, new MATERNAL READINGS OF POPULAR TELEVISION and existing mothers make sense of popular representations of motherhood on television. The volume examines the ways in which these women find pleasure, empowerment, escapist fantasy, displeasure and frustration in popular depictions of motherhood. Pursuing the Millennium, Redux The defining philosophic problem of modernity is that of the soul that has become closed within itself, and cannot get outside of itself. This closed soul is one that remains confined within the narrow orbit of a static and one-sidedly immanent account of human reality, which denies the very possibility of truths and experiences that transcend the circumscribed limits set by calculability and utility. The leading thinkers of the modern period have evoked in arresting ways the diminished spiritual, political, and historical horizon that afflicts modern man and woman. We may think here of Heidegger’s dictum that modern technology constitutes a mode of revealing that alters the way human beings relate to being, so that “everywhere and always” man only encounters himself.1 For Pierre Manent, modern man is cut off from the experience of conversion -- the postmodern tolerance of all differences is at the same time a flight from their necessarily competing claims of significance, ruling out thereby the possibility of being transformed by a singular difference.2 For Hannah Arendt, the crisis of modern politics stems from the waning of authority, which enables men and women to resolve their conflicts without resorting to violence and coercion,3 or, we might add in light of recent events, without putting social peace at the mercy of unsustainable levels of economic growth. José Ortega y Gasset, in Revolt of the Masses, provides a scathing portrait of the modern “mass man” who believes that there is no one capable of teaching him anything and who complacently imposes a technicist and materialist ideology on history and society.

    Undead Divides: An Archaeology of Walls in The Walking Dead Howard Williams In 2010, the zombie horror genre gained even greater popularity than the huge following it had previously enjoyed when AMC’s The Walking Dead (TWD) first aired. The chapter surveys the archaeology of this fictional post-apocalyptic material world in the show’s seasons 1–9, focusing on its mural practices and environments which draw upon ancient, biblical, medieval and colonial motifs. The study identifies the moralities and socialities of wall-building, dividing not only survivors aspiring to re-found civilization from the wilderness and manifesting the distinctive identities of each mural community, but also distinguishing the living from the undead. The roles of the dead and the undead in mural iterations are also explored. As such, dimensions of past and present wall-building practices are reflected and inverted in this fictional world. As part of a broader ‘archaeology of The Walking Dead’, the chapter identifies the potentials of exploring the show’s physical barriers within the context of the public archaeology of frontiers and borderlands. I just showed you the bars” (170). —V, V For Vendetta The zombie figure is an indispensible, recurring player in horror fiction and cinema and seems to be consistently revived, particularly in times of political crisis. Film is the best-known medium of zombie consumption in popular culture, and also the most popular forum for academic inquiry relating to zombies. However, this figure has also played an increasingly significant role in written narratives, including novels and comic books. Throughout its relatively short existence, no matter the medium, the zombie has functioned as a mutable, polyvalent metaphor for many of society’s anxieties, with zombie film production spiking during society’s most troublesome times, including times of war, the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and, more recently, 9/11.1 In Shocking Representations, Adam Lowenstein describes the connection between historical events and cinema by first describing how history is experienced collectively. Lowenstein describes historical traumas as “wounds” in the sense that they are painful, but also in that they continue to “bleed through conventional confines of time and space” (1).
