Information on the Data File EXIT POLL 1992 A survey conducted during the voting period for the Czechoslovakian Parliamentary Elections in 1992 Data for the Czech Republic Prepared by Jindrich Krejci (e-mail: [email protected]) Sociological Data Archive, Social Trends Project Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences A. TECHNICAL INFORMATION Country: Czech Republic (in 1992 one of two members of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic). Fieldwork Date: 1992; Friday, 5 June - Saturday, 6 June. Investigators: INFAS (Germany), IVVM (Institute for Public Opinion Research, Prague), and FACTUM (Prague) for Czechoslovak Television. Context of the Survey: The survey was conducted during the voting period for the Czechoslovakian Parliamentary Elections in 1992 in the Czech Republic with the aim to prepare election prognosis, which were aired on Czechoslovakian Television after the end of the elections on Saturday, 6 June. General Population: Voters who participated in the elections. (Every citizen of CSFR who had reached the age of 18 and was in CSFR on the polling day was entitled to vote.) Sampling Method: 1) Probability stratified sampling of the polling districts. 2) Systematic selection of respondents - random start and given sampling interval. N = 11 298 Response rate information is not provided because of the sampling method used. Fieldwork Method: Anonymous questionnaire administrated by respondent. Respondents were contacted outside voting stations of selected polling districts. Administrated questionnaires were collected into a copy of the ballot box. Weighting: The data should be weighted. There are two weights constructed on the bases of final results of the election to Czech National Council - wghtk on the base of results in districts; wghts on the base of results in the whole Czech Republic. 2 Czechoslovakian Parliamentary Elections in 1992: The former Czechoslovak federation (in 1992 Czech and Slovak Federative Republic - CSFR) had two members, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. There were three Parliaments, the Federal Assembly, the Czech National Council and the Slovakian National Council. The Federal Assembly was bicameral, it consisted of the Chamber of People with proportional representation of two nations of the federation (150 members; 99 voted in the Czech Republic, 51 voted in Slovakia) and the Chamber of Nations with equal representation of both republics (150 members; 75 Czech Republic, 75 Slovakia). The elections in 1992 were held from Friday, 5 June to Saturday, 6 June to all 3 parliaments in the federation. Czech voters vote the representatives for the Chamber of People and the Chamber of Nations of the Federal Assembly and for the Czech National Council. The electoral system was based on the principle of proportional representation and was almost the same for all three parliaments. Parties, political movements or coalitions were to submit their lists of candidates for multi-mandate electoral regions. Voters voted first for a political subject (party, movement or coalition), then they could prefer individual deputies from the list using so-called priority vote (4 priority votes were the maximum). After the election into the first scrutiny only the parties and political movements with a minimum of 5 per cent and coalitions with no less than 7 per cent of votes in either the Czech Republic or Slovak Republic were admitted. Political subjects with 2 and more per cent were entitled to receive a state financial support for their activities. Deputies were elected for a term of four years.
