Stephenson County offers a diversity rare in so many cities of our size. We have a diverse population in terms of race, religion, family background and more. We have an economic diversity with successful and growing businesses in manufacturing, agribusiness, professional services and retail. That economic diversity allows for a variety of employment, shopping and recreation options that help to make this such an interesting community. Our diversity of viewpoints and backgrounds ensure that new ideas and concepts will find a receptive audience. This diversity makes Stephenson County a stronger, more vibrant place to live, work and play. Business Office 27 W. Visitor and Community Guide 2019 www.greaterfreeport.com 3 welcome Jodi Miller Mayor of Freeport Freeport is a city with a rich and vibrant history. From the site of the second Lincoln Douglas debate to the rich manufacturing history, from century-old businesses like The Union Dairy to the Stephenson County Historical Society and everything in between, Freeport is a city that honors and respects its history. But what makes Freeport special is that we are a historical community who looks to the future and always strives to move forward! We aren’t afraid of new concepts, such as combining organizations to form the Greater Freeport Partnership and we embrace collaboration, new ideas and newcomers! I am excited about the history we are creating today for future generations! I am proud to call Freeport my home! While Douglas won the election and retained the senate seat, his answer to a question on slavery, known as “The Freeport Doctrine” alienated the South, split the Democratic Party and helped enable Lincoln to win the Presidency in 1860. • Actor Calista Flockhart, movie columnist Louella Parsons, Harlem Globetrotter Deacon Davis, founder of BET, Robert Johnson, Presidential assassin Charles Guiteau and NFL star Preston Pearson were all born in Freeport. • Three Native American tribes are indigenous to Stephenson County: the Sac, the Fox and the Winnebago. • Freeport is the home to the oldest Carnegie Library in Illinois and one of the first designed by Chicago architectural firm Patton and Miller. It is now where Freeport City Hall is located. • Pearl City is believed to have got its name from a story about a resident named Daniel Ditzler and his finding several pearls along the Yellow Creek in the late 1880’s. The story says he sold one for $800 and used the money to build a new house. It is believed that some of his descendants still have some of the pearls that Ditzler found. No other pearls were ever found in the Yellow Creek after Ditzlers’ finds. • The number of breweries in Freeport in the 1890s rivaled those in Milwaukee. • The Winneshiek Playhouse, in Freeport, is the oldest continuously operating amateur theater in the country. • Freeport got its name because William “Tutty” Baker, one of the first settlers in the area, used to provide travelers a free ferry across the Pecatonica River. It is nicknamed “Pretzel City” because of the large number of German residents and breweries who served pretzels. • Krape Park is the only park in the world that is a palindrome (spelled the same backwards as forewards.) • Henney Automobiles in Freeport made 4 cars for President Harry Truman. • The Freeport Art Museum has one of Illinois’ largest collections of ethnic artifacts outside of Chicago’s Field Museum. • Sliced cheese was invented in Freeport in 1940 at a Kraft Cheese plant. 6 www.greaterfreeport.com Visitor and Community Guide 2019 Visiting STEPHENSON COUNTY Stephenson County creates the perfect atmosphere where nature meets nostalgia.
