[email protected] DATE CORRECTION PSG MEETING 16TH MARCH Mt Maunganui Intermediate School, 21 Lodge Avenue, Mt Maunganui 3116 Phone 07 575 5512 Email: [email protected] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Mtint.school.nz/ FROM THE PRINCIPAL Melissa Nelson Tena koutou katoa Proposed Zone Changes: As I am sure you are aware, the Tauranga/Bay of Plenty region is New Zealand’s fastest growing region. To respond to this growth, an additional primary school provision is planned in the Pāpāmoa area, with Te Manawa o Pāpāmoa School opening in term 1, 2022. This school will have an enrolment scheme home zone and this will have flow on effects for other primary school enrolment scheme home zones in the area, including our school. The population forecasts put pressure on Mount Maunganui Intermediate School, Mount Maunganui College and Pāpāmoa College. The Ministry of Education would like feedback on how the schools can best cater for this ongoing growth in the coming years. Mount Maunganui College will also be implementing an enrolment scheme home zone which will begin in term 1 2022. If implemented, this may extend the zone of our school, and therefore increase our roll. In recent years, steady roll growth has put pressure on staffing and property provision for Mount Maunganui Intermediate. Having certainty about our roll projections would benefit our school and allow us to plan for the future. v Changes to enrolment schemes impact surrounding school enrolment scheme home zones, thus feedback on these proposed changes is being sought, prior to zones being decided upon and then the changes implemented for 2022 and beyond. Public meetings will be held on: • Monday March 15th, 7 – 8pm, Mount Maunganui College • Tuesday March 16th, 7 – 8pm, Pāpāmoa College • Wednesday March 17th, 7 – 8pm, Trustpower Baypark Stadium If you would like further information about this process, or wish to find out more about the public meetings, please click on the following link: https://www.dandgconsulting.co.nz/tauranga I understand that this process may cause some uncertainty. I encourage you to attend the public meetings for further insight and we will certainly undertake to keep our MMI community fully informed every step of the way. Travel Safe In the past week, we have had two near misses on the roads with two cyclists narrowly avoiding being hit by vehicles. In addition, we have had calls from concerned members of the public about how some of our students are riding on the roads and footpaths, in dangerous and careless ways. PLEASE talk with your child about riding, scootering, skating or walking to school safely. It is important that our students know that they share the roads with the public and that they should consider the safety of others, as well as their own. It was great to see the participation and house spirit in last week's tryathlon. Next week, we look forward to the school swimming sports and to seeing our whanau poolside, to cheer on their children. Have a great weekend everyone. This means that the government will contribute $150 per child to our school operations grant, based upon the 2020 July roll return. We have opted into the government scheme, in good faith, in order to reduce the burden on families. Prior to 2020, we asked families for a school donation, specialist fees and fees for day trips and education outside the classroom (camps). The majority of camps were cancelled in 2020, due to Covid-19. We cannot ask for any fees related to curriculum, with one exception. We can ask families to make a voluntary donation towards the cost of camp. We believe that EOTC/School Camps is a very important part of the curriculum for emerging adolescents. All children will attend school camp, regardless of whether camp fee donation is paid or not, however, we are sincerely hoping that as many families will make the voluntary camp donation in 2021. We may not be able to sustain the EOTC/School Camp programme if we do not receive your support, in order to cover costs.
