The standard form of construction in the Werders near Danzig was the “Vorlaubhaus” or arcaded house, making this structure which emulates the Lower Saxony/Friesland housebarn unique. The quaint structure dates back to the 18th century when Klaas Reimer (1770-1837), founder of the Kleine Gemeinde lived in this village. In 1798 he married Maria Epp, daughter of Peter Epp (1725-89), Aeltester of the prestigious Danzig Gemeinde. Reimer and his wife acquired a half Wirtschaft from her uncle in Neunhuben. This photograph by Carillon reporter Tim Plett (Carillon News, Sept 13/99, page A9), is evocative of the spirit of the pioneers. For an entire weekend the wagon train captured the hearts and minds of adults and children alike as it made its way across the R. M. of Hanover, stopping for a lunch in Niverville, supper in New Bothwell, a worship service in Chortitz, lunch in Mitchell, and finally a parade down Steinbach’s Main Street escorted by Mounties, to be met and welcomed at the south end of Main Street, K. R. Barkman park (property once owned by the wealthy Franz Kroeker family), by a croud of over a 1000 people. Riding in the lead wagon are Henry and Trina Unrau, the second are Harold and Betty Unger, third is Jake Braun and fourth is Jake Spenst.     Seeds from the Steppe: Mennonites, Horticulture, and the Construction of Landscapes on Manitoba's West Reserve, 1870–1950 by Susan Jane Fisher A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2017 by Susan Jane Fisher Abstract In this study, I offer a new research direction on the history of the Canadian prairie West with a joint focus on emotional history, life stories, and horticulture among the Mennonite immigrants from imperial Russia, who first assembled villages on Manitoba’s West Reserve in the 1870s. In this study, I trace oral culture, expressions of emotion, and the inter-generational transfer and preservation of botanical materials and traditions, in order to help us understand how individuals within a distinct ethno-religious group and in a colonial setting, experienced immigration and resettlement, and constructed landscapes accordingly. In the processes of their encounter, construction, and remembering, landscapes in history entail intricate myths and emotional attachments, whether they are explicitly known or implicitly understood. I argue that traditions of horticulture and homemaking, and the myths and memories surrounding prairie settlement, are creative acts through which West Reserve Mennonites at once reinforce settler-colonial agendas of success in the Canadian prairie West, and tie themselves emotionally to both a real and imagined history as a quiet, self-sufficient, agrarian people. Memoirs, diaries, newspapers, material artefacts, and oral histories connected to people on the West Reserve demonstrate that late nineteenth century Mennonite immigrants placed significant emotional value on the plant materials they carried with them in the hopes of reestablishing their sectarian, agrarian communities on the Canadian prairie.
