Jurassic Coast Arts Programme Dates for Spring 2011 Jurassic Coast Arts Programme Dates for Spring 2011 Jurassic Journey (Artsreach and Villages in Action) Ben Osborne, highly acclaimed Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 and stills photographer for David Attenborough's BBC series, has been recording a visual diary of his experiences of the Jurassic Coast to provide raw material for a new touring show. Introduced to local experts, especially geologists, this stunning visual and educational presentation of the significance of this outstanding coastline is being further enhanced by an artist led collaboration with Matt Harvey (poet), Sammy Hurden (musician) and Lal Hitchcock (visual artist). Joint Launch Date 10 February Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis Dorset Dates 7 February Nether Compton Village Hall, nr Sherborne 8 February Powerstock Hut, nr Bridport 9 February tbc 20 February West Stafford Village Hall, nr Dorchester 10 March Hinton Martel Hall, nr Wimborne 11 March The Pamela Hambro Hall, Winterborne Stickland 12 March Langton Matravers Village Hall 1 April Litton Cheney Village Hall 2 April Cerne Abbas Village Hall Devon dates 11 February Kennaway House, Sidmouth (workshop) 12 February Bradninch Guildhall 13 February Mary Tavy Coronation Hall 16 March Lapford Victory Hall 17 March Newton & Noss Village Hall 18 March Highweek Village Hall 19 March Axmouth Village Hall 20 March Axmouth Village Hall (workshop) Desert Crossings (State of Emergency) This cross-cultural performance is a collaboration between UK based producers, State of Emergency and South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma of Vuyani Dance Theatre. It will be performed by a company of five dancers. Inspired by the similarities between the England's only natural World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast and the Skeleton Coast of Namibia and created in direct response to Maqoma's recent piece Skeleton Dry, the work is an exploration and reflection on the two very different regions, which are united through the rocks on which they stand. "Desert Crossings puts the vastness of geological time into perspective while delving deep into what this means for human culture. It suggests a link between our cultural and natural heritage and our present; our common humanity with South Africa and Namibia; skeletons of species alive today with the fossils of those species no longer with us." Sue Davies OBE, Chair of the Culture Committee of the UK National Commission for UNESCO Dates: 16 February Tacchi Morris Arts Centre, Taunton 17 February University of Plymouth 25 February Pegasus Theatre Oxford 26 February Pegasus Theatre Oxford 1 March Place Theatre, London 2 March Rhodes Arts Complex, Bishop’s Stortford 4 March Pavilion Dance, Bournemouth 8 March New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth 11 March Deda, Derby 31 March Number 8 Arts Centre, Worcestershire 1 April Corn Exchange Dorchester 29 April Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis (part of this year’s Fossil Festival) 30 June National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, South Africa The Lyme Regis Fossil Festival (Lyme Regis Development Trust) The theme this year is ‘Marine’. The festival will focus on the Jurassic Coast's natural heritage with activities and events in science, arts and education delivered through a wide range of partnerships. Scientists from the Natural History Museum will be in residence as in previous years, and there will be an exciting arts/science programme building on the achievements of earlier festivals. 30 April across Lyme Regis 1 May across Lyme Regis Exploratory Laboratory (Big Picture) New Technologies Seminar As part of Exploratory Laboratory, Walford Mill is hosting a series of two seminars designed to reveal the possibilities for the use of Rapid Prototyping in creative work, process, theory, illustration and application. Exploratory Laboratory is investigating the earth science and coastal processes revealed along the Jurassic Coast through the imaginative insight of visual artists. Wednesday 9th March and Wednesday 16th March, Walford Mill Processional Work (Activate) Activate, in partnership with DepARTure, Wave and Poole Borough Council will run a project called Light on Time across Poole and Bournemouth in spring term, with the carnival archive at the Dorset Records Centre and the Jurassic Coast gallery in the Dorset County Musuem as starting points. This is a pilot project for a more ambitious intergenerational project at the same time in 2012. 26 March Final Procession: Poole Quay, 6.30pm Bog Standard or Beautiful (Dorset Design and Heritage Forum) Whilst the stunning setting of the Jurassic Coast lends itself to artistic inspiration we are also mindful of our responsibility to citizens of the world to protect the site and only make additions which will truly compliment the location and stand the test of time with regard to sensitivity, content and applicability. Therefore we devised, in consultation with Public Art South West - a ‘Public Art Code of Practice'. We are currently working with partners on the Durlston project, Chesil Beach project, Seaton and Exmouth Visitor Centres, and excitingly, work will start on Charmouth Bridge in January 2011, and the bridge is planned to open at Easter 2011. Coastal Voices (Lighthouse, Poole; Serious Music and B Sharp) Coastal Voices is an exciting new choral project for both experienced and aspiring singers and music makers of Dorset and East Devon to connect with the voice of the coastal area including England's only natural World Heritage Site and to the Cultural Olympics in 2012. Beginning in early 2011, the project will offer participants the opportunity to work with renowned British and international musicians and ultimately perform new commissions created for the project in London, and Poole and Weymouth as part of the Jurassic Coast Earth Festival, in the lead up to the sailing events in Weymouth and Portland. Commissions will be agreed and a coordinator in place by March 2011 with work in communities starting in April. Inspiration Aspiration East Devon (DAISI) Devon Arts in Schools Initiative (DAISI) have been planning this project for the last year or so, and are moving into the classroom stage of the project in January. They are working with the Axe Valley and Exmouth Learning Partnerships throughout the spring term. The celebration of the Axe Valley partnership will connect in some way to the Fossil Festival 2011, and the Exmouth partnership will connect in some way to the regeneration of the town and particularly to developments at Orcombe Point. Winter Women, a Walk of Life Movement Workshop (Helen Poynor) An intensive workshop for women led by international movement artist and teacher Helen Poyner. Walk of Life workshops are an encounter with the place where land and sea meet on the World Heritage Coast. Held in partnership with the Jurassic Coast's Arts programme, Creative Coast. EVOLUTIONARY STUDIES ON MANIOLA JURTINA: THE ENGLISH MAINLAND, 1958-60 E. R. CREED Genetics Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Oxford W. H. DOWDESWELL Biology Department, Winchester College E. B. FORD and K. G. McWHIRTER Genetics Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Oxford Received5.X.6t 1.INTRODUCTION WEhave already demonstrateddemonstrated thatthat thethe A'IaniolaManiola jurtina populations in Southern England, from West Devon to the North Sea, are char- acterised by relatively low average spot-numbers, having a female frequency-distribution unimodal at o spots. Also that in East Cornwall thethe spottingspotting hashas aa higherhigher averageaverage valuevalue inin bothboth sexessexes andand isis bimodal, bimodal, at o and 2 spots, in the females (Creed et al., 1959). In 1956 we studied the transition between thethe twotwo typestypes inin aa transecttransect runningrunning twotwo milesmiles south of Launceston, approximately midway between the north and south Coastscoasts ofof thethe Devon-CornwallDevon-Cornwall peninsula.peninsula. We found that the one form of spotting changed abruptly to the other in a few yards without any barrier between them and that the distinction between the two increased as they approached each other (the "reversedine " effect). TheseThese features features persistedpersisted thethe followingfollowing year, yet the point of transition had shifted; for the East Cornish type had advanced three miles eastwards, indicating that the two spot-distributions represent alternative types of stabilisation. This situation is so exceptional that it seemed essential to test whether or not it is widespread along the interface between the Southern English and East Cornish forms and if it were maintained in subsequent years. The results of that investigation are described in this article.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION THE GROUP When I decided to set up DDCAG I was determined that this was not to be a hobby society. The word ‘community’ in our title indicated that our main aim was to engage the people in our excavations wherever we found ourselves working on archaeological sites. It wasn’t just my heritage or the groups, it was everyone’s, especially the people who found themselves living in the same area, on the same land, as those that lived there hundreds and thousands of years before them. Many of the group’s early members came from my adult education classes in archaeology, but that was only the nucleus as we rapidly increased in numbers by going to various local events with our table and various artefacts I had collected for teaching, spreading the word about Dorset archaeology. As with many such groups luck plays a part in kick-starting what can be a long process of building membership and trying to find a project that will stimulate the interest of existing and future members. I was approached in my village cafe by an acquaintance that had heard of the group and suggested that we could have a look at a brick structure on the hill, as no one could remember what its function had been or how old it was. So this became our first project. It gave me an opportunity to teach some basic excavation techniques on a site, I believed, would not produce much in the way of real archaeology. But as we worked we found that the structure was attached to a much larger building with chalk and flint foundations surviving under the large mound of rubble, one that had two rooms, one of which was half cobbled.
